Sammie or Sammy? (and the use of a NN as a first name...)

[name]Hi[/name] guys,

[name]Just[/name] wondering what your thoughts were on the use of this name as a stand alone first name (rather than as a NN for [name]Samantha[/name]) and the appropriate spelling for it.

On the one hand I don’t want to restrict by christening with a NN when we can always use it anyway, but on the other, I just prefer the name [name]Sammie[/name] to [name]Samantha[/name].

Also, with spelling, my feeling is that [name]Sammie[/name] is the female version, but having spoken to a few friends, I’m now not sure. Help?!

This name is on my list as well. I plan on using [name]Samantha[/name] as a full, nn [name]Sam[/name] and [name]Sammi[/name] (for some reason I pictured it spelled like this for a girl). I am all about going for the name you plan to use, but I just don’t know how much a growing girl would love just being [name]Sammy[/name]/[name]Sammi[/name]/[name]Sammie[/name]. I don’t like [name]Samara[/name] or any other option, but I do think [name]Samantha[/name] is a can’t-go-wrong-classic. If you’re against it though, I think naming her [name]Sam[/name] would be edgier and more mature than the kiddish [name]Sammi[/name]. Good luck

I am not a fan of nicknames as full names and that is me being nice about it. I know a little girl with the name [name]Ellie[/name] and to me that is mean. It is cute while they are little but not so cute when you are 20, 30, 50, or 80. But that being said I like the [name]Sammie[/name] spelling better (not sure why).

I would go with [name]Samantha[/name] as the full name. While some nn names can work, [name]Sammie[/name] feels too informal. With [name]Samantha[/name], she would have options should she want a more formal name for business situations or college applications. As for the nn, I do prefer it spelled [name]Sammie[/name].

I don’t have anything against nicknames as first names. Why would [name]Sammie[/name] be taken less seriously than [name]Jayden[/name] or [name]Nevaeh[/name]?

That said, I don’t like [name]Sam[/name]/[name]Sammy[/name] on a girl. Have you considered [name]Samara[/name] or [name]Samira[/name]?

[name]Hi[/name] charley333,

I can speak on a personal level on this topic because my sister is a [name]Sammi[/name], just [name]Sammi[/name], and she’s turning 24 next week. From what I’ve seen, she loves her name especially that she is just [name]Sammi[/name] in a sea of other girls named [name]Samantha[/name] who use [name]Sammi[/name]. I believe one time when I asked her about it, she said, “they all just want my name” ([name]Samantha[/name] nn [name]Sammi[/name]).

Her only real complaints are people assuming that her legal name is [name]Samantha[/name], mainly when she’s asked for her name, only to again be prompted, “Ahem, your LEGAL name?” like she didn’t understand the question. Sometimes, she will just go by [name]Sam[/name] on resumes and sometimes she is mistaken for a male on paper. All in all, no major crisis.

S.ammie, is my grandmother’s first name. I also knew someone briefly by the name S.ammie G.ail. Sometimes my Grams would go by S.ammie or her first and middle name or just her middle, which rhymes with G.ail. [name]Hope[/name] that helps.

I don’t especially love [name]Sammie[/name] as a standalone name. I would go with [name]Samantha[/name] so that she has the option of using a more formal name as an adult if she wants to. If she loves [name]Sammie[/name], she might never use [name]Samantha[/name] at all, but it would be nice to leave her the option. I’m somewhat biased, because I’m personally a [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] with a mother who only ever intended to call me [name]Dani[/name]. I hated [name]Dani[/name] as soon as I was old enough to have an opinion, and have ALWAYS been called either [name]Danielle[/name] or [name]Catherine[/name]. I’m glad I had those options, and even she now agrees that I’m definitely a [name]Catherine[/name].

Definitely [name]Sammie[/name] for a girl, [name]Sammy[/name]'s allllll boy imo.

However, I do not see it as a stand alone name at all, ever. Not on a girl or a boy.

[name]Just[/name] want to add… I couldn’t figure out what was bugging me about the [name]Sammie[/name] spelling (been thinking about it as I’m really considering [name]Samantha[/name] for my own baby if it’s a girl). There’s a food chain around me and several of their menu products are called “Sammies.” (As in sandwiches- the chain is Quiznos. Not sure if it’s regional or national). I agree that [name]Sammy[/name] sounds more boyish, but for this silly reason, I would go with [name]Sammi[/name]- just an “i”

I personally prefer the spelling [name]Sami[/name] for a girl. I’ve heard of the sandwiches called Sammies at Quizno’s as well, but that’s not a real issue imo. You’ve chosen a great name, good luck!
