I know a real-life Samwise!! His little brother is [name_u]Finn[/name_u] after [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and his sister is [name_f]Bronte[/name_f]. Can you say literature lovers!? I think Samwise is super cute and is based on the most loyal of any characters I know.
[name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] and Theoden for sure as first names.
[name_f]Shire[/name_f] and Strider as middles.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if I would be brave enough to use them on a child of my own. I’ll end up as the old lady with a bunch of dogs who have fantastic names (first and middle of course!)
YIPPEEEEEE!!! [name_m]How[/name_m] wonderful! Good man ;). I actually like [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Samwise more than [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Frode. Maybe because I went to school with a horrible Frode, but Samwise is such a good, great and amazing character, he’s so wonderful, caring, kind and sweet, strong and wonderfully brave. Congrats! [name_f]May[/name_f] I hope for a boy for your next one?
That’s about the argument I used to get Samwise. I said “[name_m]Frodo[/name_m] didn’t really do anything…[name_u]Sam[/name_u] almost drowned and saved [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] a lot and in the end, he carried him up the mountain. If [name_u]Sam[/name_u] hadn’t been there, [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] would have quit.” Then I said all that stuff you said, then “Plus, we were also using Frode because it mean clever, but Samwise has wise in it.”
He tried to say “But it doesn’t flow as well…” And I said “It flows exactly the same”
Yep there you go. So now we have [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Samwise, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Dante[/name_m] [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], Voltaire [name_u]Loki[/name_u] [name_u]Constantine[/name_u]. We don’t have a 4th name yet but I’m going to be asking when I’, done in the girls forum.
I once came up with the combo Lorien Luthien [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], but decided it’s probably a bit much for one child. That said… I love the names Lorien, Beren, Luthien, Beren, [name_m]Peregrin/name_m, Samwise. There are also some words in either the sindarin or the quenya languages that could be used as names. For instance: Mirya, Turon, Alima, Athëa, Melin etc. They are amazing languages that could provide plenty of inspiration to future moms and dads.
Aw, Samwise! I like it ever so much, especially as a middle. I don’t know if there are any Tolkien names I’d actually use as firsts, because most of them are so tied to the mythology–many of them even created for it–that it would just scream “MY PARENTS WERE TOLKIEN FANS!” all my child’s life. Being a Tolkien fan is an awesome thing, but I think I’d be a little squeamish about labeling another person that distinctively. That said, most of the names would make incredible middles.
Thanks to [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], I realized lately how awesome Elessar would be as a middle. Some other favorites of mine:
Maedhros (from the Silmarillion; the oldest and one of the noblest of Feanor’s sons. Pronounced MY-thross, TH as in thee.)
Fingolfin (Also from the Silmarillion. A bit much as a name, I realize, but he was the Elf who, when all hope was lost, challenged the Dark [name_m]Lord[/name_m] Morgoth to single combat. Although he was defeated, he gave Morgoth seven wounds from the pain of which Morgoth was never free again.)
Finrod (Silmarillion again)
Bregalad (The Ent who entertained [name_f]Merry[/name_f] and [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] during the Ent-moot. He was in charge of rowan-trees.)
Elladan and Elrohir (the twin sons of Elrond, conveniently left out of the movies I don’t know if I could use one and not the other, though!)
Elrond, of course
Faramir, of course (mentioned by others, but he’s one of my very favorites! What a sweet guy.)
Imrahil ([name_m]Prince[/name_m] of Dol Amroth. He came to aid Gondor in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Eomer later married his daughter, Lothiriel.)
And there are a few awesome names in [name_f]Merry[/name_f]'s Brandybuck family tree, which looks Welsh-inspired:
I love the name Samwise. He is my favorite Tolkien character (and from something I read, possibly Tolkien’s favorite as well). My husband and I have both talked about that as a likely future boys name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the kid thought it was “weird,” he could easily go by [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. And, in my experience, Sams tend to be really likable guys.
I’ve never met a male [name_u]Sam[/name_u] I didn’t like. We put Samwise into the middle – [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Samwise – [name_u]Sam[/name_u] was the unsung hero.
My dads friend loved the LOTR, it’s actually how she met her OH so when she became pregnant with twin boys she called the [name_f]Merry[/name_f] and [name_m]Pippin[/name_m].
I like the name [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] but prefer connotations of the bird to the Hobbit (sorry) so I’m keeping the e. I don’t really like [name_m]Pip[/name_m]/[name_m]Pippin[/name_m] either. I know, Nameberry blasphemy.
I rather liked Beorn.
I like the names of the Eagles, especially Thorondor and Meneldor.
Incidentally, my brother uses “Bombadil” as a verb to mean “tell an elaborate story that nobody asked to hear that takes everything off on a tangent for ten minutes.”
I know a young [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], he totally rocks the name
I love [name_u]Rohan[/name_u], Faramir, Samwise and [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m].
I have two lovebirds my ex insisted on naming [name_u]Ori[/name_u] and [name_u]Nori[/name_u] too come to think of it lol.
