Samwise and other Tolkien names

This is just me musing because I can’t use it (I’m already using Frode, the name [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] was based on) but I do find it lovely. It’s got the common [name_u]Sam[/name_u], wise is always a good quality, and [name_u]Sam[/name_u] was really the hero of the story, if quietly. I really love it

Other than that, I find these all usable and I love them:

Aragorn – though I realize this is super connected to LOTR
[name_m]Bard[/name_m] – this is GP word name for me too
Celeborn
Cirion
Eldarion
[name_m]Madoc[/name_m]
Meriadoc*
Pelendur
[name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] ([name_m]Pippin[/name_m]) – This is absolutely usable!
Rohan – Place name, very cool.
[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] – also very usable
Theoden
Tilion

My GP on the list – Shadowfax. This would be an awesome middle name. Also, Shire, just cause I like the sound and the images it gives me in my head.

[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to add.

All great names. Shadowfax would make an amazing middle. Theoden and Aragorn are both wonderful. Samwise though… swoon! So cute.

My favourites:
Beren
Eärendil
Ecthelion
Elendil
Elessar
Éomer
Faramir
Haldir (more because of the movie though, because… swoon)
Legolas
Strider
Theodred

I almost put Theodred on my list, then went “Eh, I only need one [name_u]Theo[/name_u]- name.” I do think it’s cool and usable. Eomer, Faramir, and Strider too. People use [name_u]Walker[/name_u] and [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] so why not Strider?

I added [name_u]Rohan[/name_u] to my list and [name_f]Shire[/name_f] to my GP section.

Maybe I can get my husband to use Samwise instead of Frode? [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Samwise [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] >.> I’ve already convinced him on Voltaire so if I try hard enough…

I find Faramir so dashing, and a great namesake. Samwise is such a sweet name, but still a GP for me.

You convinced him on Voltaire??? Whoa, I might need you to talk to my husband!

I make a good argument :stuck_out_tongue: I went through all the great things about the man Voltaire, about how much I love Candid and all that. Then I brought up the singer Voltaire (whom [name_u]Cody[/name_u] LOVES) and how we sing his song “Goodnight Demon Slayer” for the baby and he was sold. He thinks Voltaire, [name_m]Damien[/name_m], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvana[/name_f] would all work well together. We also have [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but they’re more back up names anyway.

So maybe if I make a really good argument about Samwise, we can replace Frode with it.

My husband has been trying for a long time to get me to agree to name something (a child, a cat, a fish…) Shadowfax. I keep using the “that’s not white” excuse. But he finally got me to name my little white Corolla Shadowfax haha.

My favorite is definitely [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] (no e?) nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]. The most usable by far, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

Fair points ;). And good song! [name_m]Damien[/name_m] [name_m]Quillon[/name_m] Samwise would be a smashing name, I think.

I’ve always been partial to [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f].

In the books, [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] is spelled this way, no E. It’s swoon worthy that name.

I’m starting to think so too [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] too, but it’s a girls name and there’s boyish names similar in the Tolkien-verse :stuck_out_tongue:

I love [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m], [name_u]Rohan[/name_u], and [name_m]Thorin[/name_m]. I’d never use them, but I love them. I’m just starting to really get into Tolkien’s works, but I’ve been a fan of the movies since I was old enough to watch them. Part of the reason I love [name_u]Sam[/name_u] so much is because of [name_u]Sam[/name_u] Gamgee. My taste in names just isn’t adventurous enough for Samwise. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lots of my favorites. we’ve also added Finglas (one of the ancient ents) and Thorondor (king of the eagles) to our definitely list. I actually met a Thorondor once!

I like Samwise, Strider, [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] especially with nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m], and Legolas. I also adore Greenleaf as a gp (or a dream surname) Swoon.

Fili & Kili- I like Fili’s name better, alas sadly, neither one is usable in the real world.
Isildur- He’s like the legendary cousin of [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]. Awesome, but a flawed namesake.
Smeagol- I might be the only one, but I kind of think this name is adorable.
(I would never use it, but it’s got a nice ring to it… hehe!)
[name_m]Thorin[/name_m]- A kick-butt name and character. This one is definitely substantial enough to be used.

I also think that Shadowfax and Glamdring would make the ultimate names for pets. =]

You’re not alone. I think Smeagol sounds adorable too but should stay in the bet category. I know someone named [name_m]Torin[/name_m] (so it’s close there).

Glamdring the Foe Hammer…I shall name my next cat this. Orcrest the Goblin Cleaver as well.

i find almost all of the [name_m]Elven[/name_m] names usable. [name_u]Rohan[/name_u] and Rohirrim (the latter as mn) have been on my list forever. Elendil is great. i love [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] but the character is a bit sad so i wouldn’t use it on a person.

so far i have met a real life [name_m]Frodo[/name_m], Gandalf and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]. i was surprised to see how well [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] worked for a person! i wouldn’t have expected so. in the same way, Aragorn could work for a real person, although my first inclination is to stay away from it since it’s such a well-known Tolkien name.

i named two cats of mine [name_m]Tin[/name_m]úviel and Feanor. i recommend the Silmarillion for even more name inspiration!
that said… Silmaril?

the dwarves have some great names too if you’re into Nordic-sounding names.

my friend loves Samwise as do I! I would use it I have these on my own list

Hobbiton - girl
Meriadoc -boy
[name_f]Shire[/name_f] - boy
Legolas - girl
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - boy/girl this way

Glorfindel is my absolute favorite Tolkien character. I would love to use this name. I do not feel like it’s particularly unusable, by my husband gives me weird looks anytime I bring it up. He has such a beautiful story!

I also love the names Peregrin & Faramir.

And I know we’re in the Boys forum, but Valinor is one of my favorite options for girls. I suppose it could work well for boys, too.

Also, Arathorn could be an alternative to Aragorn, maybe? I don’t know, it might be as associated with LotR as Aragorn, but I don’t think so.

[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_m]THORIN[/name_m]! So so much. I probably wouldn’t use it on a human being but I’d definitely consider it for a pet. Something large and wolf-like like a [name_m]German[/name_m] shepherd or malamute. I’d file Bilbo under awesome pet names as well.

Kili is another favourite of mine but as a pp noted it’s not very usable :frowning:

For the Dwarves, I sort of like Bombur even though he didn’t do much :stuck_out_tongue: His name has a cool sound. Aside from the obvious [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], I think there’s some Dwarf names that are usable. I think there’s a few that could be used as a nn for a subtle connection to the work.

[name_m]Balin[/name_m]
[name_m]Dain[/name_m]
[name_f]Dori[/name_f] – as a nn. I know someone with a really long Greek name containing -dorus and he goes by [name_f]Dori[/name_f]. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], [name_m]Salvador[/name_m].
Durin
Fili – as a nn. Bonfilio, Fileas, Filibert, [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], [name_m]Philemon[/name_m]
Kili – as a nn. Eskil, Kildaire, [name_m]Killian[/name_m]
[name_u]Loni[/name_u] – on its own or as a nn. [name_m]Alonzo[/name_m], [name_u]Fallon[/name_u], [name_m]Lonan[/name_m], [name_m]Marlon[/name_m], [name_m]Quillon[/name_m]
[name_u]Nori[/name_u] – nn. [name_f]Honor[/name_f], Lenoris, Minori, Norio
[name_u]Ori[/name_u] – By itself (means ‘my light’) or nn. [name_m]Boris[/name_m], [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Torian[/name_m]
Thrain

Tolkien came up with some beautiful names, but to me, they work best as middle names. Names like [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] and Gandalf could be compared to naming your child [name_f]Oprah[/name_f]: they’re so entrenched in someone else’s identity that it would be hard for the child to make it their own. The only ones I might consider using are [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], Faramir, and [name_m]Peregrin/name_m, nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]. But it seems that everyone wants to use [name_m]Peregrin/name_m, nn [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] on Nameberry—I swear I’ve seen at least three birth announcements for different [name_m]Peregrin/name_ms/Pippins. It’s kind of like the [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] of Nambeberry names: LOTR and/or The Hobbit were probably the first pieces of fantasy literature that really affected a lot of us and pulled us into another world, so Tolkien names are easy choices for Berries.

If you really want to use a Tolkien name, go ahead because a lot of them are gorgeous and tied to great characters. I just think we should analyze why this happens among Berries because these names clearly have a pull that names from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and A Song of Ice and [name_m]Fire[/name_m]/Games of Thrones don’t have (yet).

I do really like dantea’s suggestion of the Dwarves’ names as nicknames, especially [name_f]Dori[/name_f] for names like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], Fili for [name_m]Philip[/name_m]/[name_m]Phillip[/name_m], and Kili for [name_m]Killian[/name_m].
