Saskia

I love this name. However, I’m not sure how workable is it in the US. It’s very ‘out-there’ and might look ‘made-up’ to some. Personally, I think it is wearable, especially with the modern nickname [name]Kia[/name].

[name]Do[/name] you think a [name]Saskia[/name] will encounter pronounciation troubles? I pronounce it sauce-key-uh, but I know most Americans will say Sass-key-uh. Plus, I have seen many people pronounce names in a way that may no sense, especially my own name. [name]How[/name] do you get [name]Rhiannon[/name] from [name]Reine[/name]? So [name]Saskia[/name] might be butchered as Says-key-uh, Says-kye-uh, and probably a ton of other weird prns.

Pronounciation is a big factor when I choose names, since my name has been butchered so many times. If I used it, I would probably pair it with a family name that is more common, such as [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Sue[/name] or [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Kelly[/name].

This is my cousins name. We live in Australia. We pronounce it Suss-kia. I have always loved it and think it’s very pretty!

I like it, although I prefer nn Sass or Sassy rather than a car brand, [name]Kia[/name]. I have a friend [name]Corisande[/name] [name]Saskia[/name], which I think is pretty much a perfect name.

I’m in the US and pronounce it more like Soss-key-uh … only slightly (very slightly) different from your pronunciation. This name does not look made up to me at all. “Out there” is too subjective to really say, but I don’t think it’s out there. I’m not sure I love the car brand nn of [name]Kia[/name], but that’s up to you of course. I do love this name, though.

As for your pronunciation worries, here’s my take on it: My cousin’s name is [name]Louise[/name] and she is called “Lousy” ALL THE TIME. I also know women named [name]Carol[/name] and [name]Sarah[/name] who get their names mispronounced all the time as well. If people can screw up classics like those, they will screw up any name. Therefore, I would choose a name you love and not worry about the pronunciation. After all, what if you choose a name you love less (like say [name]Sarah[/name]) that you think people will pronounce correctly, only to discover that she STILL gets her name mispronounced. That seems like it would be a huge disappointment. Go with what you love. People worth knowing will figure it out.

I really like [name]Saskia[/name] and, being American, would pronounce it Sahs-Kee-ah. It doesn’t seem strange or out there to me.

As far as the mn goes, I see you have [name]Susannah[/name] on your list. [name]How[/name] about [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]?

Have you thought about the nn [name]Kiki[/name]? Or even no nickname and just using [name]Saskia[/name]? Nicknames are not necessary for everyone. Good luck on your decision.

This is a much better description of how I pronounce it. Sorry – I’m not great at prn descriptions!

I love [name]Saskia[/name]! I grew up in America, but half of my family is from The Netherlands, so I’m not sure I count as a purely American perspective. Also, [name]Saskia[/name] is one of my cousins’ middle names. Anyway, I’d say it more like saw-skee-uh than sass-kee-ah and am not the biggest fan of the nn [name]Kia[/name]. If you needed a nn (which I don’t think you would), I’d prefer [name]Kiki[/name], like another poster suggested.

Not American but I say it ‘SASS-key-a’.

I’ve come across a few [name]Saskia[/name]'s here in Australia. I don’t think it looks made up at all.

I’m in the US and I pronounce it Sahs-kia.
