Sawyer sounds like "Saw Your"?

We are looking for a boy name. Siblings are [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Mollie[/name]. I love the name [name]Sawyer[/name] (pronouncing it Soy-er) but with the last name [name]Otis[/name] it sounds a bit more like name calling than I would like. My husband thinks I’m reading into it too much. Does [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name] sound bad to anyone else? Can it be fixed with a good middle name? I’m a little heartbroken because I love the name so much. Thanks in advance.

Also any other name suggestions would be appreciated

I love the name [name]Sawyer[/name] and I have always heard it pronounced SOY-er. [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name] sounds fine to me…what do you mean when you say it sounds like name calling?

[name]Do[/name] you mean it sounds like ‘sow your oats’? I’m not sure if I would have noticed that if you hadn’t pointed out that it sounds like name calling, so I don’t know how noticeable it is. As for whether or not it’s a dealbreaker, I’m not sure. I probably wouldn’t use it, but I don’t know if it’s so horrible that you shouldn’t use it. Sorry, I’m not much help.

I love [name]Sawyer[/name], its in my top 3! I have never noticed the “saw your” connection and I’m very analytical with names. Or maybe I’m not, hahaha (I also pronounce it Soy-er) I don’t think anyone will make that connection. If you love it so much, I think you should use it!

P.S.- I have a question for you about your daughter’s name [name]Mollie[/name]. What was behind your decision to have her name with the -ie ending? I ask because I really like the name [name]Molly[/name] but had always thought it looked too plain. I recently had the thought that an ‘-ie’ looks much cuter on the end than ‘y’, but have never seen anyone with that spelling and am glad to finally see it is being used. [name]Just[/name] curious what your thoughts were behind it.

Maybe it’s because I live in [name]Alabama[/name], but I have always heard [name]Sawyer[/name] pronounced “saw-yer.” I never heard the “soy-yer” pronunciation until I started watching Lost. For me the problem with [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name] isn’t that it sounds like “sow your oats.” In my mind [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name] conjures up an image of a guy playing his banjo down by the creek.

Thanks for all the input. I couldn’t put my finger on why [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name] didn’t sound quite right to me. I’m sure now that “sow your oats” is it. It’s a bit of a weak connection so I think I am still considering it. My husband has decided that he does not like the name so I think we are past considering it as a first name, but I am pretty sure we’ll still keep it as a middle (He doesn’t really care what or if we give him a middle name). Now we are looking at [name]Enoch[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Otis[/name]. I dun care what anyone thinks, I love the way it looks and sounds.

About the [name]Mollie[/name] spelling. The only Mollies that I know spell it this way. Its a bit more modern than “molly.” I’m not a big fan of complicated spellings, but I feel that [name]Mollie[/name] looks prettier on paper than its counterpart especially with my last name and that the pronunciation/mispronunciation of the name isn’t affected.

I have to say that I love this name too, but it never made our list because right away I made the “saw your” connection. As it happens, our ln is [name]Johnson[/name] and when I said the two names together, I immediately said “Nope!” I would say if you don’t have a ln like ours, it might not be noticeable enough. Then again, kids are pretty clever with what they’ll come up with. On the other hand, I don’t think any name can escape name-teasing so you shouldn’t let it dictate you entirely.

[name]Enoch[/name] [name]Otis[/name] is very cool. I like it.
