I think it works best as a middle, and I prefer [name]Sailor[/name] to [name]Saylor[/name].
I am by no means a name expert nor do I know the history or origins of the names but I think [name]Saylor[/name] looks more feminine and [name]Sailor[/name] looks masculine.
I don’t pronounce them the same- [name]Saylor[/name] is [name]Say[/name]-ler, [name]Sailor[/name] is Sail-er- so I would go with whichever pronunciation you prefer. I do think [name]Sailor[/name] looks more masculine because of the association with, well, sailors.
I think this name would work best as a guilty pleasure or middle. All I think of is the phrase, “Hello, sailor!” Hello Sailor - Wikipedia
I agree! [name]Saylor[/name] also seems more of a name to me, and less an occupation.
[name]Saylor[/name] = [name]Say[/name]-lore, while [name]Sailor[/name] = [name]Say[/name]-ler
So I’d go with which one for pn, although I agree with others, it works better as a middle for a girl. [name]Saylor[/name] just looks trendy with the y, and [name]Sailor[/name] just doesn’t do it for me since I’m not a fan of word names. But that’s just my opinion.
That’s a good point. I prefer the [name]SAY[/name]-ler pronunciation.
Eh, I’m not too bothered by this. UpswingBabyNames has a great blog post of the myth of the name bully. I have a name contains a sexual pun, but I can count on one hand the number of times it’s been pointed out. I laughed it off. On the other hand, I remember a kid with the apparently tease-proof name [name]Robert[/name] who was dubbed Rub-It for all four years of high school. I think unless you name your kid Uranus or [name]Fanny[/name] or something, they’ll probably be fine. Kids who get picked on are going to get picked on regardless of their names (and I speak as a former bullying victim who was NEVER picked on for their name).
[name]Sailor[/name] has my vote…I prefer this spelling.
I pronounce them differently. I prefer the sound of [name]Sailor[/name] “sail-er” but if you’re going for “say-lor” then [name]Saylor[/name] makes sense and won’t have pronunciation issues
[name]Saylor[/name] if pronounced say-[name]LORE[/name]. It’s beautiful. And I like that it honours your mother.
I prefer [name]Sailor[/name] to [name]Saylor[/name].
I know they are technically two individual, non-related names, but most people are going to think you misspelled “[name]Sailor[/name]” until you explain to them how the name means dancer and honors your mother.
I like them both better as middle names than first names anyway.
I have to admit, this thread is making me doubt my taste! I love [name]Saylor[/name], that spelling – but I’ve never loved a name this much that Nameberries seemed to almost universally pan. Am I blinded by partiality or marching to the beat of my own naming drum? Hm…
I really think it’s awful but [name]Sailor[/name] if your set on it, though I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just use [name]Taylor[/name].
I’ve been looking for a good S name that is obscure and not in the top 1000. [name]Saylor[/name] has been right under my nose this whole time! It is my mother’s maiden name and now I am liking it more and more!
I prefer [name]Saylor[/name]. I agree it looks more feminine, and does have a more distinct name-like quality. [name]Sailor[/name] isn’t bad though. I really adore both, though!
I don’t think you are blind at all, I really like [name]Saylor[/name] and it obviously has great meaning for you! I think that it would make a lovely first or middle name. I can just picture a rambunctious adorable little [name]Saylor[/name] going on adventures…too cute! I think that plenty of people realize that [name]Saylor[/name] is a distinct name that stands on its own and I love the idea of honoring your mother in such a creative way. [name]Say[/name]-lore is so lovely I would go for it.
I voted for [name]Sailor[/name] because [name]Saylor[/name] just doesn’t look right to me, but after reading your reasoning behind the name I actually prefer [name]Saylor[/name]. I would keep it as a middle name because it sticks out so much with your other favorites.
