I love Scottish names! [name]Iona[/name] is the best by far. The others (besides [name]Moira[/name], but I don’t like [name]Moira[/name]), just don’t say [name]Scotland[/name] to me like [name]Iona[/name] does. Have you considered [name]Elspeth[/name]? I like that one as well, thought not as much as [name]Iona[/name].
[name]Cait[/name], [name]Aileen[/name], and [name]Maureen[/name], seem boring to me.
[name]Isla[/name] is so overused and trendy imo.
I like [name]Margret[/name], but again it just doesn’t say [name]Scotland[/name].

I love [name]Aileen[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Moira[/name]

I adore [name]Aileen[/name]! I may be biased though, I have very positive associations with that name. But, I do think it is lovely.
[name]Iona[/name] is also quite nice!
I like [name]Isla[/name] but agree with a previous poster it is feeling maybe too trendy.
Also agree [name]Margaret[/name] is very nice but doesn’t ring super Scottish, though I’m sure it has that association somewhat.
[name]Moira[/name] and [name]Maureen[/name] I don’t love. [name]Maureen[/name] maybe.
[name]Cait[/name] is a little too simple and would be forever misspelled as [name]Kate[/name].

Here are some suggestions:
[name]Adair[/name] (surname)
[name]Afton[/name] (place name)
[name]Annabel[/name] (has Scottish origins, although most people won’t associate it with that)
[name]Edina[/name] (English name, but a poetic term for Edinburgh)
[name]Eilidh[/name] (lovely, although [name]Aileen[/name] or [name]Isla[/name] is probably simpler)
[name]Fifer[/name] (surname)
[name]Fiona[/name] (people seem to think it’s Irish, but Scottish in origin)
[name]Flora[/name] (not Scottish in origin, but popular there)
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] (surname)
[name]Isobel[/name] (Scottish spelling, very pretty although it might forever be misspelled)
[name]Lileas[/name]/[name]Lilias[/name]
[name]Mirin[/name]/[name]Mirren[/name] (Irish name with historical ties to [name]Scotland[/name])
[name]Nairne[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Vevina[/name]

I like [name]Moira[/name] a lot and it feels Scottish to me.

I agree that [name]Margaret[/name] is nice, but doesn’t feel at all Scottish to me, even if that’s it’s roots.

I have always secretly loved the name [name]Skye[/name]. It refers to the [name]Isle[/name] of [name]Skye[/name]. If I were Scottish I would’ve definitely used it.

@njordv: I just discovered [name]Iona[/name] not too long ago, but I do think it’s growing on me. My sister’s name is [name]Elizabeth[/name], so [name]Elspeth[/name] is probably out of the question. Thanks for your suggestions!

@shvibziks: Thanks! :slight_smile:

@jesba: I think [name]Aileen[/name] is very pretty, but I’m not really sure about the proper Scottish pronunciation. Can you give any help in that area? From your suggestions, I love:
[name]Afton[/name] (haven’t thought of this before!)
[name]Eilidh[/name] (although I would hesitate to put such a difficult to spell name as a first)
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] (although I do think it comes off a little masculine for my taste)
[name]Mirren[/name] (also one I haven’t thought of)

[name]Nairne[/name] sounds intriguing. It reminds me of [name]Narnia[/name] :stuck_out_tongue:

@kala_way: From my understanding, even though [name]Margaret[/name] isn’t originally Scottish, it’s been a very popular name there (I think I read somewhere that it’s even the national name, if there is such a thing) for so long that it’s kind of become a Scottish name, if any of that makes sense! This is all somewhat new to me, I’m actually about 90% [name]German[/name] myself.

@stephanie413: I think that the [name]Isle[/name] of [name]Skye[/name] looks beautiful, but the name [name]Skye[/name] always looks to me like it should be included in the “trendy, here for a day” type of names.

[name]Hope[/name] this helps!

Also [name]Aileen[/name] is pronounced ale - een

My vote was for [name]Maureen[/name]. It is a bit dated, but that is why I like it. It is refreshing!
The one person I know from [name]Scotland[/name] is named [name]Margaret[/name], but [name]Margaret[/name] is just a common name used in other countries too. The [name]Margaret[/name] I know has a daughter named [name]Lorna[/name]. We were friends in high school. It is from a novel, [name]Lorna[/name] [name]Doone[/name]. I have never read it, but I know that she has.
There was a girl named [name]Morven[/name] in our high school too. I don’t think she was from [name]Scotland[/name], but that is a very Scottish name.
Other Scottish names for girls are:
[name]Nessie[/name] (from the [name]Loch[/name] Ness monster) - a nn for [name]Agnes[/name] or [name]Vanessa[/name] or [name]Renesmee[/name] (just kidding) [name]Agnes[/name] is actually Scottish.
[name]Ainsley[/name]
[name]Greer[/name]
Marsaili
[name]Effemy[/name]
[name]Ailsa[/name]
[name]Vanora[/name]
[name]Scotia[/name] means [name]Scotland[/name] and there is also [name]Caledonia[/name]

That’s so interesting! My name is [name]Margaret[/name], and a while back, I was speaking to an older Scottish gentleman on the phone (I’m a receptionist). When I said my name was [name]Maggie[/name], he said, “Oh, are you Scottish?” It confused me, but now I know why.

I voted for [name]Moira[/name], but I also like [name]Iona[/name] a lot. [name]Isla[/name] is also very pretty, but it’s become popular recently so it doesn’t specifically say Scottish to me.

[name]One[/name] of my best friends is Scottish, and she’s called Mhairi (pronounced Vari), which is the vocative of [name]Mairi[/name]. In Gaelic it’s what you would have shouted at [name]Mairi[/name] when you really needed to get her attention! I think it’s a beautiful name. When we started school together teachers were constantly asking her how to pronounce her name, but that didn’t last too long!

I really like [name]Iona[/name] & [name]Margaret[/name]! [name]Iona[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] would be so cute!

I have an [name]Isla[/name] so I am biased, I still love it. [name]Moira[/name] is also pretty and would be my second choice. I also love the suggestion of [name]Afton[/name].

I love [name]Eilidh[/name] (pronounced A-lee).

[name]Aileen[/name] is lovely, also my elder sister’s name though we’re Irish and [name]Moira[/name] is beautiful.

juicyorange: Thank you for your suggestions!! From your list I like: [name]Canna[/name], Vaila, and [name]Mirren[/name], and I’m going to have to look up some of the others!

@niteowl13: Thanks! [name]Effemy[/name] is very pretty, but unfortunately our last name ends with an “-ie” sound :frowning:

@maggiefromcanada: [name]Glad[/name] I could help  Thanks for your thoughts!

@hannahjeanirwin: Thanks!

@jasmine.lee: Thanks for the suggestion! I think [name]Iona[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] is pretty, too.
