Scottish Girls' names?

What do you think of these Scottish girls’ names?

[name_f]Sheena[/name_f] - I never used to like this one but it’s growing on me.
[name_f]Ailsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Mairead[/name_f] - pron. [name_f]MY[/name_f]-red
[name_f]Seonaid[/name_f] - pron. SHOW-nah, I don’t really like the [name_f]Shona[/name_f] spelling
[name_f]Morven[/name_f]
[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]
[name_f]Ishbel[/name_f]

Also, what are your favourite Scottish girls’ names?

[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Caitriona[/name_f]/[name_f]Catriona[/name_f]
[name_f]Iona[/name_f]
[name_f]Maura[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilias[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Mairead[/name_f]. I am interested in [name_f]Morven[/name_f] but don’t know if I’m saying it right. I don’t like [name_f]Seonaid[/name_f] as much as Irish [name_f]Sinead[/name_f]. [name_f]Ishbel[/name_f] looks like yet another form of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and I couldn’t use [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. It’s fine on someone else’s child though I think I like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] or [name_f]Sib[/name_f]éal more.

@stripedsocks - I like all the names you mentioned. I hadn’t actually thought about [name_f]Maura[/name_f] - it’s such a sweet name. I love [name_f]Isla[/name_f] but it’s super popular here so that puts me off. I can’t use [name_f]Catriona[/name_f], [name_f]Iona[/name_f] and [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] because I know too many people with these names already but they are all very nice - [name_f]Catriona[/name_f] was a big favourite of mine as a teenager.

[name_f]Morven[/name_f] is pronounced MOR-ven.

I like [name_f]Vevina[/name_f] and [name_f]Vanora[/name_f] ([name_f]Vanora[/name_f] is the Scottish form of [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f])
I also like [name_u]Blair[/name_u], [name_f]Elspet[/name_f], [name_f]Finella[/name_f], [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_f]Glenna[/name_f], Kenina, [name_f]Kenna[/name_f], [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u], [name_f]Rhona[/name_f], [name_f]Senga[/name_f] and [name_f]Una[/name_f].
Off your list my favorite is [name_f]Ishbel[/name_f]. I know it’s Scottish but for some reason it feels like an ancient Egyptian goddess.

I love [name_f]Seonaid[/name_f] & [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] of your list; they’re pretty and not too common.

here are my favourite Scottish girls’ names; maybe you’ll like them since you don’t seem to sky away from complex spellings!

[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f]- pronounced AY-lee.
[name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f]- pronounced KEYvah. it’s more popular in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] but it’s roots are Irish & Scottish Gaelic.
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]- simple, but I’ve always loved it. and it’s means beautiful!

@junebabie - [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] is lovely but it’s super popular here which puts me off using it. On the plus side it never gets spelled or pronounced wrongly.

Is [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] pronounced like [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_u]Mirren[/name_u]? That’s honestly the only one I like from this list, but I’m pretty hit-and-miss on Irish/Gaelic/Cornish/Scottish/Welsh names (although, admittedly, I like Scottish names best from the whole lot of them!). [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite Scottish names:

[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] (omgoodness, adore! It’s the only Scottish name I am madly in love with. Prn. AY-lee)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] (although I’d only use the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling, [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], but I like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] much more than [name_f]Ishbel[/name_f])
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]

I love the name [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f]! Have done for a long time - I live in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and have done since I was little and I always was so jealous of the (few) girls in my school with the name. It sounds ever so slightly exotic because of the pronunciation.

I also like [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] (EE-fa) I’ve known a few Scottish [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]'s but I believe it’s more popular in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] than in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] so it may be a but of a moot point.

To be honest all the names except [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f], [name_f]Morven[/name_f], [name_f]Ishbel[/name_f] and [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] (I know more people with it as a last name though…) are new to me and I’ve never heard them used. Although
I like them all and I think they are all quite pretty.

I’m in love with these names:
[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - nn could be [name_f]Nessie[/name_f] which is just too cute if you want a “Scottishy” nickname
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f] - like [name_f]Esme[/name_f] but with a little more individuality after the whole Twilight phase
[name_f]Rona[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhona[/name_f]
[name_f]Morag[/name_f]

@ashthedreamer - [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] is pronounced like [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_u]Mirren[/name_u]. I also love [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] but it is super popular, same with [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] but I know at least 10 Fionas so that one’s pretty much out as well.

@elizah - Can I be nosy and ask what part of [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] you’re from. I live in the Highlands and even though these names aren’t popular they are relatively well used here. I can’t believe I didn’t put [name_f]Morag[/name_f] on this list - I never used to like it but it has really been growing on me recently.

Kind of like Central [name_f]East[/name_f] [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], just a bit north of Edinburgh.

The only one off your list I really like is [name_f]Sheena[/name_f], the others are nms. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_u]Camden[/name_u], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] and [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f].

I love the name [name_f]Mairead[/name_f]! I live in the US and the pronunciation I’ve heard here is a little different (muh-raid, sort of rhyming with parade), but the one you listed is lovely also. Other than that I rally like [name_u]Mirren[/name_u].

@jesslyn - as far as I know the muh-raid pronunciation is the Irish pronunciation, [name_f]MY[/name_f]-red is the Scottish pronunciation - I think there are maybe accents you can use to clarify which pronunciation you want but they always confuse me!
