When I was a teenager, I saw a town named “Sedalia” on a map and immediately fell in love with it as a future baby girl name.
It appears to be completely unique - It is not listed on any baby name sites, not even here. When you google “baby name Sedalia,” next to nothing comes up. I’m wondering what others think of it. Is it as pretty and whimsical as I once thought?
What are your thoughts on and impressions of the name Sedalia?
It seems as though the first place called Sedalia was a small town in [name_f]Missouri[/name_f]. This town was named after the founder’s daughter, [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m], who went by Sed. The town in [name_f]Missouri[/name_f] was originally called Sedville but the name was changed to Sedalia for the sake of euphony. According to local lore, it was also changed because “towns that end in -ville don’t amount to anything.”
While it seems to not be a legitimate person name, it isn’t too far away from sounding like other names (Vidalia, [name_f]Dalia[/name_f], etc.) to work on a real child.
Like I said, I loved it as a teenager. I don’t think I would actually name my child this, but I think it’s an interesting name and wanted to get others opinions about it.
Thanks for that info, that is very interesting! I think it rolls off the tongue nicely, and I’m surprised it has never (or rarely) been used as a name.
