[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
I like it a lot, but I don’t love it (yet) – please give it your best shot!

genevieve is a classic, gorgeous girls name, that isn’t overly common, but still recognisable enough to have little spelling and pronunciation issues.
it has brilliant nickname potential, evie, viv, jenny, ginny, gen etc, you will surely be able to find a nn that you like, and that suits the person well
genevieve also works on people of all ages, it’s sweet for a baby/small child, recognisable enough to not cause issues for teenagers and appears professional and elegant on adults
hope this helps a little!
Such a great name! It’s long, elegant, and classy but not pretentious. It’s a [name_u]French[/name_u] beauty (St. [name_f]Geneviève[/name_f] is the patron saint of [name_u]Paris[/name_u]). It has ask many nicknames with a range of styles to choose from if desired - [name_f]Genna[/name_f]/Genny, [name_u]Genie[/name_u], [name_f]Neve[/name_f]/Nevie, [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/Evie, [name_f]Evy[/name_f], Vieve, [name_f]Viv[/name_f]/Vivi, etc. For everyone who loves the [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/Evie/Evy names but thinks they’re getting to be overdone, [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is a less obvious choice to get to them
This name is in my top 3!! I love that it has so many nickname options like [name_f]Genna[/name_f], [name_f]Genny[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Evy[/name_f], [name_f]Neve[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] etc. It works for all ages and grows easily with them as they get older. It’s familiar enough so people won’t pronounce it wrong and it’s not overly popular either. I think [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is an amazing choice
I love this name so much!! [name_f]My[/name_f] mn choice for it is [name_f]Colette[/name_f] and I would call her [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
It’s a Nameberry favourite - and berries always have good reasons to like a name
I have loved [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] since reading the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] books as a kid! It’s spunky yet feminine, and has so many options for nicknames! I love both the [name_f]English[/name_f] and [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciations
Thank you everyone! I feel like [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is objectively a perfect name for so many reasons, and I really love seeing it on other people’s lists. It really fits our (middle name) style, and my husband likes it. I just want to find that spark!
This is a great point, thank you. I love names that you can picture on any age and in any walk of life, but that still manage not too feel too “basic”.
I agree, I like that it feels super-feminine but objectively has quite crisp, unfrilly sounds.
@josieaitken so many lovely nicknames, thank you!
@littlemxsunshine [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f] “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]” is stunning
A very good point!
We’d use the [name_f]English[/name_f] pronunciation but I agree that the [name_u]French[/name_u] one is lovely too. And I like that it translates so well across the languages.
Genevieve is sleek, stylish and pretty. It has flair without being in your face and it has a kind of quiet strength
Sophisticated, refined. A stand out name.
Oh my gosh!! When I first joined NB, [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] were my top names [name_u]Love[/name_u] this idea in general too
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] “[name_f]Jen[/name_f]-uh-veev” has always enchanted me. Its most famous bearer was St. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], who urged her village to stay and pray rather than flee when rumors portending the coming Huns under [name_m]Attila[/name_m] in 451 had sparked a panicked frenzy among her people. The Huns never did end up arriving, and as legend has it, her prayers led Attila’s army to go to Orléans instead. Celebrated by the ages, she’s forever enshrined in [name_u]French[/name_u] history as its Patron [name_m]Saint[/name_m].
And the sound of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] naturally conjures up a Renaissance princess glowing forth light from the belly of a forest without being overly fussy. It’s sleek, yet melodic. Most names aren’t heard properly and lose their power in the air, but there’s no mistaking when someone says [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. It’s also so warm and cinnamon-spiced if one chooses the nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. For those prone to imagining when they come across names, it transforms the dullest of moments into summers baking pies in salty, seaside cottages or winters kindling the fireplace. It’s delightfully cozy and fantastical!
Fortunately, nns abound if Ginny isn’t your favorite! Along with [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], there’s [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Gen[/name_f], etc., which help to reign it in if you’re worried about [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] being too long or regal.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] this I do enjoy the flair of that EEV sound at the end — smooth but sharp!
@anon25197097 I’m glad you think so! You have a very cool classic style so I’m glad [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] appeals.
Oh my goodness, this is just the most perfect description, and the most perfect way to sell a name to me as well. I have used [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Anouk[/name_f] and I love those names for exactly that reason — they’re a little bit staccato and not easily mistaken for anything else.
Thank you for the historical background, too! Definitely a strong namesake for a little girl.
I really love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. Have you ever seen The Umbrellas of Cherbourg? The main character is named [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], played by a young [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] Deneuve.
Ooh, no but thank you for the recommendation!
Very poetic like, genuine and underused yet so beautiful. Nickname could be [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. Sweet and simple.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]! It’s so effortlessly romantic and oozes class and femininity… for a very very short time, she was a favorite girls’ name, though maybe she was just a fad of the week. It was just before I fell hard for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]/Isobel, and I cycled through [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Laila[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] almost daily.
If [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] wasn’t in my top 3, I can almost guarantee you either just [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] would be on my list instead… I’ve been a huge fan for years. It does seem quite different from your girls’ first names but I could maybe see you with a [name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or something? If I ever have a Genevieve, she’d probably be Genevieve Simona something or other—love that combo!
I’ll spare you a very good [name_u]French[/name_u] friend’s opinion on [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]… since we’re trying to talk you INTO [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f].
Oh no! I’m considering for a middle name actually because it’s just such an underused classic and I’ve always admired it from afar, but if there’s a negative association in [name_u]French[/name_u] I’d like to know!
I’m glad you like it at least
Genevieve is so soft but powerful at the same time! It can suit any type of person and is very versatile. It’s popular, yes, but it’s not one of those names that you find 10 of in a classroom. It’s heard enough. It’s very sophisticated but also has cute nicknames - [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], etc. It’s just a wonderful name!
I think you already have tons of good reasons to love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. But also… because Caro [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] has the perfect sounding balance the strong K sound at the beginning and the soft but vibrant EEV at the end.
. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend once tried to get me to take [name_u]Willow[/name_u] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] off my list because they sounded like dog names to her? So honestly, really not that bad. Maybe it’s the equivalent of [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], or [name_u]Rex[/name_u] in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking countries? I don’t really find it much of a dealbreaker but it always amused me!
Her dog’s name was [name_u]Louise[/name_u], so, again, the [name_u]French[/name_u] could just give really elegant names to their dogs.
Either way, I’d love seeing it as a middle on your list!
