Selma or Theresa

Hey there!
I’d love to have your thoughts - positive and negative - on those 2 names. What stereotypes/characteristics would you associate the names [name_f]Selma[/name_f] and [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] with? Which do you like better and why?

[name_f]Selma[/name_f]:

Pros: Fits in with other trendy names of the moment like [name_f]Selah[/name_f] and all the other two syllable girl names that are popular currently. It’s not ranked on the SS popularity list, so there’s little chance she’ll be one of many in a class.

Cons: Might be considered an “old lady” name.

[name_f]Theresa[/name_f]:

Pros: Yet again, it’s not popular, so it’s not likely she’ll have to go by [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] LastInitial all her life. Has a lot of nickname potential.

Cons: Also might be considered an “old lady” name.

I think both names are lovely, but I have always liked [name_f]Selma[/name_f]. I really don’t think you could go wrong with either… is there a possibility you could use both? I think [name_f]Selma[/name_f] [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] has a nice ring to it!

[name_f]Selma[/name_f] is really sweet and does have an old lady sound, but I think it works. I think [name_f]Selma[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. I don’t see any cons!

[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] is a bit more grown up and I can picture her at any age. It sounds strong and a little on the sexy side. No cons!

I like the sound of [name_f]Selma[/name_f] better, I think it sounds so cute.

[name_f]Selma[/name_f]: I’m not really a fan as it sounds a bit dated and old lady-y. I think it would sound nice in some combos but sinkhole to keep in mind that the child would be called by their first name.

[name_f]Theresa[/name_f]: I’m neutral. It’s a family name, from my dad’s side. It has always reminded me of a painting, or a tree with golden leaves.

I like [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]! A great underused classic.

[name_f]Selma[/name_f] will always make me think of the smoking aunt on the Simpsons with the gross voice and unshaven legs. Sometimes I remember [name_f]Selma[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] (but I just remember her from that scene in Cruel intentions). Third on the list is [name_f]Selma[/name_f], [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]… so nothing terribly good.

[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] makes me think of Catholic Churches and st. [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] little flower and catholic school uniforms. I like this name better because of nn possibilities

As far as associations go, [name_f]Selma[/name_f] makes me think of [name_f]Selma[/name_f], [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] and the movie “[name_f]Selma[/name_f], [name_m]Lord[/name_m], [name_f]Selma[/name_f]”. Generally, the Civil Rights Movement. [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] calls to mind Mother [name_f]Teresa[/name_f] (just canonized!) and Catholicism in general.

I like both.

[name_f]Selma[/name_f] makes me think of fish for some reason.
I love [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] much more!
