My friend and I were arguing about how to pronounce this name from [name]Jane[/name] Eyre:

St. [name]John[/name]

[name]How[/name] would you pronounce it?

St. [name]John[/name] = [name]Saint[/name] [name]John[/name]. Traditional and straightforward.

The British pronounce it [name]Sinjin[/name]. That’s how it’s pronounced in every film adaption of [name]Jane[/name] Eyre I’ve seen.

Ditto to what the pp said. I am curious how else it is supposed to be pronounced.

[name]Edit[/name]: You guys are fast. I see now the other way. Hmm, had no idea!

I wasn’t really sure, because according to nameberry, it’s pronounced [name]Sinjin[/name].

southern.maple is right. If you’ve ever watched Mad Men, there is character named St. John and it’s pronounced Sinjin.

Agreed: sin-jin. Not the easiest name to have in most places, I think.

I do think as a sur name it could be [name]Saint[/name] [name]John[/name]. But yeah as a first name [name]Sinjin[/name].
