Seymour? and current top 5

I can’t find many old forums on the name Seymour… I’m assuming because “see more ____” jokes have deemed it unusable. [name_m]The[/name_m] few comments I have seen about it also mention a slew of pop culture references that I’ve somewhat vaguely heard of but have never actually seen the movies their related to to really know how bad of associations they are.
But I can’t explain why, I just love this name. It feels quirky and cozy to me.:woman_shrugging: And you could have the potential nicknames, Mo, [name_m]Morrie[/name_m], Sy, [name_m]Morris[/name_m]. I think the practical answer is going to a resounding “no” for [name_m]Seymour[/name_m], but I can’t help myself from asking about it on here.

At one point in time my husband actually liked the way [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] sounded with our last name, but it isn’t one we’ve revisited in a very long time. As of the last time we touched base on names together, ones he liked in the first spot were [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Samson[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], and potentially [name_m]Morris[/name_m] depending on the time of day.

Some of the main combos in consideration for those 5:
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m] [name_m]James[/name_m]
[name_m]Morris[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Ellis[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Davis[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Augustin[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (I don’t know why in my head I can picture the nickname Lamb/Lamby for a baby from this? :joy::woman_shrugging:)

Names he changes his opinion on depending on the day but has mostly vetoed at this point:
[name_m]Clifford[/name_m]
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]
[name_m]Rudy[/name_m]
[name_m]Elmer[/name_m]

Names he likes but we either can’t use or are too popular for comfort for us:
[name_m]August[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Oswin[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Elwood[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m] [name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m] [name_m]Finch[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] & [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] are my favorites from your remaining options. :light_blue_heart:

Maybe showing my age or love of 80s movies, but I immediately think “feed me, Seymour.” I think you have better options on your list already.

I actually love [name_m]Seymour[/name_m]! And I say this even as a big fan of [name_m]Little[/name_m] Shop of Horrors, which is where I assume a lot of people go with pop culture references. I agree that it feels so cozy. I also think it goes with the rest of your list pretty well in terms of style, so I see why you’re drawn to it!

I also really like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] & [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (I actually think the “Lamb” idea is so cute) from your list.

I think we have some similar favorites as I’m a big fan of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], [name_m]Samson[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Grover[/name_m], [name_m]Clifford[/name_m] & [name_m]Rudy[/name_m], so if you ever wanted new suggestions, I could probably offer some (but since you didn’t ask for them here, I’ll refrain for now!)

I am game for suggestions! I feel like we’ve seen every name in existence and they’ve all been dwindled down by my husband’s vetoing, but his opinion changes all of the time so if I see something we haven’t revisited in a while he might be down for it!

[name_m]You[/name_m] have to consider how much the objections of adults really represent what the child himself will experience. Would children Seymour’s age know any of these media references adults know? No child born now is going to make a [name_m]Little[/name_m] Shop of Horrors reference because almost no child born now is going to know what that is. If the fact that adults are thinking of these references is really going to bother you, then maybe the name isn’t a good option, but I wouldn’t worry about it being a problem for the child. He will experience his name as it is perceived in his generation, not yours.

As well, children will find a way to make a joke out of any name. Giving him a simple nickname like Morris/Morry/Sy allows him to avoid it if he wants, but it simply isn’t a huge deal to someone’s life to hear “see more…” jokes in elementary school. I wouldn’t toss the name immediately.

Otherwise…I like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], [name_m]Morris[/name_m], and [name_m]Linus[/name_m], especially [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] and [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].

Incorrect, I’ll be watching 80s films with my son. I don’t think anyone here is saying [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] absolutely can’t be used because of a pop culture association. We’re just mentioning what the name makes us think of. But claiming children born in 2026 won’t watch films from before they were born or understand pop culture references from previous decades is just wrong.

I don’t dislike [name_m]Seymour[/name_m], but it sounds like the opinions haven’t been overwhelmingly positive, so maybe this one is better served as a middle name? Something like [name_m]Samson[/name_m] [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] or [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] or [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Seymour[/name_m]? I’m not familiar with any of the associations with it, but I’ve heard the “see more —” thing.

[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], [name_m]Samson[/name_m] [name_m]James[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] though, and [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] nn [name_m]Lamb[/name_m] is literally the cutest thing ever :heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

This is so sweet. I had [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] on my list a couple years ago, but never thought of Lamb/Lamby! I also really like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] from your list! [name_m]Not[/name_m] a fan of [name_m]Seymour[/name_m]. I prefer [name_m]Morris[/name_m] from your list to get to Mo and [name_m]Morrie[/name_m].

[name_m]Seymour[/name_m] does have a clunky cool vibe, old-man style, kind of chill, but I admit something holds me back – not sure what, maybe I just like the other names on your list more.

Me too, sorry, showing my theatre kid side but it would be the first thing on my mind. And fwiw I also know a ton of references from my parents’ generation, some of which I’ve never even seen the film for or whatever, I have just absorbed them by osmosis  I can totally see it working for your vibe, though, and I don’t think it’s unusable or anything, just that the LSOH reference is a strong one for many people.

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] ‘Lamby’ makes sense to me and is so sweet! I think my favourite option for you rn is [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], love him!

I like Seymour but spelled Seamore because of the way it looks

Linus Ambrose is so good and I like Gilbert but maybe Gilbert Benjamin instead of Gilbert Wilder

I think [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] is so sweet! I’m a theatre kid at heart so I think of the song Suddenly [name_m]Seymour[/name_m] whenever I see the name, but I love that song so thats not a negative. I don’t think the pop culture reference would be as big of a deal to a younger kid (elementary age) but may become more of a thing as kids discover the musical (if they do) from middle to high school. I would worry about the “see more…” jokes more than anything

I adore your style! I love [name_m]Samson[/name_m] [name_m]James[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Ellis[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Davis[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Augustin[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (Lamb/Lamby is sooo cute)

Also so sad to see [name_m]Clifford[/name_m] vetoed, it’s my current favorite for boy (with the nickname [name_m]Kit[/name_m])
