If I have a lucky anything, it’s the color red. Always, no matter how much I protest that my favorite color is actually red-violet/burgundy, it’s the color red that pops up in my life. And reading over my current list of favorite names, I couldn’t help but notice a few variants of red on there. :0
So I started to compile another list of names, of names that are a shade of red or mean red. I thought it might be neat, maybe when I actually start having kids, if I gave them red as part of their name, a good luck charm from mummy. Or just a nice little quirk to their name as it is.
[name]Scarlet[/name] (actually my pen name, one of the many ways red has shown up in my life)
[name]Rose[/name], [name]Rosemary[/name], [name]Roisin[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Roselyn[/name], [name]Roseanne[/name]/a, ?-[name]Rose[/name], middle name [name]Rose[/name], [name]Rosemarie[/name], etc.
[name]Rooney[/name] (originally inspired by [name]Mickey[/name] [name]Rooney[/name], but it also means red!)
[name]Rousseau[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Rory[/name]
[name]Violet[/name] (as in red-violet, perhaps?)
any other suggestions? Ideas for names that work as a shade of red? I thought also of [name]Burgundy[/name] and Maroon, but I don’t feel they work as well.
Thanks! [name]Valentina[/name], I can see, same with [name]Valentine[/name]. Such pretty names! [name]Brick[/name] does give a reddish impression, but I wouldn’t use it myself, I think [name]Cat[/name] on a Hot [name]Tin[/name] Roof!
Oh, [name]Amarantha[/name] or even Amaranth sounds beautiful! I love the little fable I found associated with the flower. [name]Garnet[/name] and [name]Vermillion[/name] are also cool!
[name]Crimson[/name]…I wonder if that’s a little too obviously much, like using Purple for a name, if that makes sense.
I love [name]Crimson[/name]! I have a special connectipn to [name]Crimson[/name] (and [name]Clover[/name]) through a song with my father. I would love to use either of those names in the middle some day.
What a load of names! Interesting, how most start with a “[name]Ro[/name]” or at least with an “R”?
[name]Cressida[/name], that sounds right to me, but I have a bad association with the name “[name]Reid[/name]” that automatically takes it off my list (although I’ll keep it on here for anyone else looking!).
[name]Phoenix[/name], [name]Rory[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Clancy[/name], Edom; all of these have meanings relating to red. Also, there is [name]Blaise[/name] which has associations with fire.
Here are two names that I would remove from the “red names” list, because of their alternate meanings:
[name]Roux[/name]: a thickening agent for soups, composed of wheat flour and fat.
[name]Vermilion[/name]: derived from a Latin word meaning “worm.”
And here are a few names that I would add to the “red names” list:
[name]Clancy[/name]: derived from an old Irish surname, meaning “red warrior.”
[name]Flannery[/name]: derived from an old Irish surname meaning “red valour.” (author [name]Flannery[/name] O’[name]Connor[/name].)
Merah: Indonesian, “red.”
Merlot: French (pronounced mer-LOH), a red wine.
[name]Phoenix[/name]: Greek, not only the mythical bird, but a word literally meaning “dark red.”
Pyrrha: Greek, “red; flame-colored.”
Rubeus: Latin, “red.” ([name]Hagrid[/name]'s first name, in the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] series.)
[name]Seraphina[/name]: Latin, derived from Hebrew, meaning “fiery one.”
I would take [name]Roux[/name] and Aubergine out, but I’ll keep [name]Vermillion[/name] since it is a shade of red used in painting. Adding in [name]Clancy[/name], [name]Flannery[/name], Merah, Merlot, [name]Phoenix[/name], Pyrrha and Rubeus. But not [name]Seraphina[/name] and [name]Blaise[/name], both nice names (especially together! sibset?) but too much fire and not enough color for me.
A bit pinky though, aren’t they? I’ll add [name]Magenta[/name] in though: it was used in both [name]Blue[/name]'s Clues and [name]Rocky[/name] Horror Picture Show!
