Shepherd?

I’ve been on twice before seeking advice on baby #3 due at the beginning of February. Thanks to some very helpful feedback, we’ve narrowed down our list to two finalists. We think our children, [name]Gage[/name] and [name]Sadie[/name], will be joined by a little brother named [name]Griffin[/name] (in spite of the shared G initial with [name]Gage[/name]) or [name]Asher[/name]. The middle name is still very much under consideration.

Anyway, my husband and I have both recently fallen for one more name: [name]Shepherd[/name] – nn [name]Shep[/name]. We ran it past the kids, though, and they were not sold at all (our son likes [name]Shep[/name] but not the full name and our daughter said all she could think of was [name]Shepherd[/name]'s pie). I’m just curious about the Nameberry community’s reaction to this one. Should we add it to the running?

Thanks!!!

I’m a strong supporter for occupational names ([name]Bishop[/name] being my favorite) but I am not too key on [name]Shepherd[/name]. I think [name]Asher[/name] is the best choice. Being a fellow youtuber, I can only think of [name]Toby[/name] [name]Turner[/name]'s dog, [name]Griffin[/name] when I hear that name. [name]Toby[/name] has officially put that name in [name]Pet[/name] zone.

Best of luck with baby boy 3!!!

Without a family connection, I’m not a fan of [name]Shepherd[/name] as a first name. It’d make a nice middle name though. [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name]?

I really like [name]Shepherd[/name]!!! It is by far my favorite from your other options  It sounds so strong and is in the same caliber as [name]Gage[/name] imo. Good [name]Luck[/name]

I like [name]Griffin[/name] the best

I know a southern older [name]Shepherd[/name]. He goes by [name]Shep[/name] and has a successful career.

I really like [name]Shepherd[/name] (nn [name]Shep[/name])! A quirkier choice than others like it, and such a cool nickname.

I like [name]Griffin[/name] the most and don’t particularly care for [name]Shepherd[/name] as a first name. [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name].

I think [name]Shepherd[/name] is great! Easy to say, spell and pronounce, but not that common, and handsome

[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Shepherd[/name]!!

I like griffin, I know a boy with this name he also gets called [name]Griff[/name]. [name]Shephard[/name] is ok, but I don’t love it. [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name] is the way to go I think…

I changed my name to Sheperd about 8 years ago after graduating high school and realizing that most Americans cannot pronounce my Persian name (Sepehr pronounced (sep-air). Since I’ve used “Sheperd” I can tell you that 7 out of 10 people who ask me for my name reply with some combination of the following: “really?”, “thats such a cool name”, “wow, i’ve never heard that as a first name but i like it”, “really?” “that’s an awesome name!”, “is that your real name?”, “is that your first name? really?”, “i really like that name”, “nice”, “no really what’s your first/real name”.

I’m being completely serious. Apparently it’s one of those typical last names that can be easily used as a first name but is often neglected. The only other Sheperd (or [name]Shepherd[/name] as its commonly spelled) I’ve ever heard of is [name]Shepard[/name] [name]Smith[/name] on [name]FOX[/name] News, and he happens to be the best and most objective anchor on that network.

Also, if you are interested, here are some nicknames I’ve been given over the years. All of which I like, and none of which I was ever offended by: [name]Shep[/name], Sheep, Sheep [name]Man[/name], Sheep herder, Sh’pard, Shipper, [name]Shep[/name]-[name]Shep[/name], Sheppy, Shepster, and Shepardo.

Our son’s first name is [name]Shepherd[/name] (he’s 3) and we love it! We’ve had so many compliments on it…“such an unusual name” “so cool” “so strong”, etc. Our surname is Crook So “[name]Shepherd[/name]'s Crook” seemed to be the obvious choice
Good luck in your search. I know I’m biased, but I really like the name [name]Shepherd[/name]. And yes, it does get shortened to [name]Shep[/name], which I also like. [name]Jerry[/name] Seinfeld’s kid’s name is also [name]Shepherd[/name] incidentally.

I like [name]Shepherd[/name], but I also like [name]Griffin[/name] and [name]Asher[/name]. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

I love [name]Shep[/name] with your other kids’ names!

I’m not a [name]Shepherd[/name] fan. I love [name]Griffin[/name]. [name]Asher[/name] is quite nice with your children’s names.

I like [name]Shepherd[/name] quite a bit, especially as a brother for [name]Gage[/name] and [name]Sadie[/name]. Between [name]Shepherd[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], and [name]Asher[/name], [name]Shepherd[/name] is definitely my fave.

I know a couple posters in the thread have recommended [name]Griffin[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name], but that sounds like a herdsman from a high-fantasy novel, out in some enchanted meadow, herding griffins all day.

Wow, I hadn’t been on in some time and just read the more recent comments on this thread. Thanks, everyone, for your thoughtful responses. We’re one week away from number three’s arrival and we are going to make our final decision when we lay eyes on our little guy. Your collective feedback is most appreciated and definitely helping us get closer. I’ll be sure to post a birth announcement once we’re home.

Thanks again!!
