I posted about this topic earlier: if [name]Sherlock[/name] & Mycroft [name]Holmes[/name] had a younger sister, what would her name be? This isn’t for a child, but as a game/story.
Rules:
Name needs:
At least one o in the name (because both [name]Sherlock[/name] & Mycroft share an o as well as r and c, but those aren’t as obvious)
Can’t be popular. Needs to be obscure like [name]Sherlock[/name] & Mycroft.
no less than 5 letters
must sound good with [name]Holmes[/name]
Prefer:
2 syllables
Contain an r or
For letters to only occur once
Thought of: [name]Cor[/name]delia
Hermione
[name]Pen[/name]rose
Primrose
[name]Rosalind[/name]. I just see the same parents naming a girl [name]Rosalind[/name]. [name]Penrose[/name] is good too though. [name]Hawthorne[/name] also comes to mind.
if you dont mind not using and o (as I also think the o doesn’t stand out as much as you think)
[name]Bathsheba[/name]
Galadriel
[name]Tempest[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name]
[name]Tamsin[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
I’m in love with BBC’s [name]Sherlock[/name], so I got a little excited when I saw this topic. Mycroft and [name]Sherlock[/name] are so incredibly quirky that it’s nearly impossible to come up with possible names for a third sibling. I always assumed that Mycroft and [name]Sherlock[/name] were family names. (Are they? Does anyone know?) Now that you’ve brought up the shared letters I want to go digging for options for a sibling…
Wow, what an awesome topic! I’m going to have to think on it and come back to the thread later.
southern.maple, I believe I’ve read all the [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name] stories, and there are no comments whatever on the brothers’ names. I’d love to know how [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Conan[/name] [name]Doyle[/name] picked them. It makes sense to assume Mycroft and [name]Sherlock[/name] are family names, but, just going from the stories, I have no idea. By the way, I love those lists!! I think they’re right on.
[name]Just[/name] mining those two British [name]Baby[/name] Names lists, what about [name]Portia[/name], [name]Viola[/name] or [name]Clotilde[/name]? They fit all the rules (unless [name]Portia[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] aren’t obscure enough–I think [name]Clotilde[/name] might be), plus [name]Portia[/name] sports an R and [name]Clotilde[/name] a C.
There is a children’s book series featuring the [name]Sherlock[/name] sister [name]Enola[/name].
[name]Elora[/name], comes to mind. [name]Hermione[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] are also good suggestions. Although it doesn’t have an “o”, I really like [name]Cressida[/name].
I heard somewhere that [name]Sherlock[/name] and Mycroft were meant to be their middle names, and they had something a bit more ordinary like [name]James[/name] or whatever as their first name, so them being family names would make sense if that’s the case. I don’t know how true that is, though.
[name]Both[/name] names are fairly similar to more popular names - [name]Shirley[/name] and [name]Michael[/name], and [name]Shirley[/name] was used on boys in the past, so I’d be inclined to go along the same naming theme with a girl, a slight variation of a more popular name.
Looking at that name list, I can see [name]Philomena[/name] working as a sister, a more unusual feminisation of [name]Philip[/name] than [name]Philippa[/name].
Ooh, I love the suggestion of [name]Cressida[/name]. [name]Portia[/name] feels like a good fit too, but perhaps not obscure enough… [name]Lucasta[/name], [name]Araminta[/name], [name]Octavia[/name], Estrild… [name]Rosamond[/name] could work, going back to some of the original ideas.
I also enjoy the BBC show and that’s where I got the idea for the common o from:
Sherlock
Mycroft
John Watson
Moriarty
[name]Greg[/name]ory Lestrade
Molly
[name]Anders[/name]on
[name]Sally[/name] Donovan
Mrs. Hudson
[name]Irene[/name] [name]Adler[/name] is the odd one out.
[name]Cressida[/name] is gorgeous! It feels like it would fit beautifully.
@southern.maple: I don’t know where the names originated. They’re wonderfully eccentric, but I’d never burden a child with [name]Sherlock[/name] or Mycroft.
I really like the suggestions of [name]Cressida[/name] and [name]Hermione[/name]. [name]Augusta[/name], [name]Honoria[/name], and [name]Minerva[/name] all jumped into my brain as well.
