Shiloh - your thoughts?

[name]Shiloh[/name] has suddenly grown on me so much, it’s on it’s way to becoming my favourite name for a boy. Other than [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name], it’s the first boys name I’d loved in a long time!

What do you guys think of it?
[name]Do[/name] you think Brangelina’s daughter [name]Shiloh[/name] will still be in the public eye by the time I have children, in 4 to 5 years or so, considering I live in [name]England[/name], where celebrity culture is a lot less prominent (though I do have plans to move to New [name]York[/name] City at some point)?
Can you picture a little boy with the name [name]Shiloh[/name]?
Any suggestions for [name]Shiloh[/name]'s middle name(s)?

Thanks

[name]Hi[/name]!

I do like the sound of [name]Shiloh[/name].

It’s somewhat impossible to say how much [name]Shiloh[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name] will be in the public eye down the road - it will basically depend on what she wants…I think she’ll always be around at least a little teeny bit. There is real potential for her to remain a big deal among the celebrity-following (and even those who aren’t, I mean, I’m not, but I immediately think of her…but of course, she’s recently-named).

The name does ring rather feminine to me because of her. Also I think the SH sound is kind of feminine, which is probably part of why Brangelina used it. Also, Biblical place names more often get feminine use than masculine, I think, partly because there are so many fewer women’s names in the Bible (i.e. [name]Carmel[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Bethany[/name], [name]Samara[/name]…there is uni [name]Jordan[/name], I guess there is masculine [name]Zebulon[/name] and maybe some more I’m not thinking of).

I think I remember that when Brangelina chose this name there was a small amount of coverage about a mild huff among a handful of religious folks because the name is often (perhaps mis-) understood to be an allusion to (the) [name]Messiah[/name] in the Bible. Not a deal-breaker, just something to think about.

I remember reading a book in grade school called [name]Shiloh[/name], it is a dog’s name in the book. Unclear how long schoolkids in the US will continue to read it.

Also in the US historically oriented people will think of the Civil War battle.

[name]Hope[/name] that helps as you consider!

I actually prefer [name]Shiloh[/name] on a boy than a girl. I like the Biblical and the Civil War legacies as a place name, I like the cool sound but I don’t like the celebrity association at all. The name is bound to remain in the spotlight for years to come and that fact will keep the name on everyone’s radar. This means one thing of course= rise in popularity. If you love it, go for it! Other alternatives are [name]Jericho[/name] and [name]Canaan[/name]. I love your other choice of [name]Jasper[/name] more than [name]Shiloh[/name]. [name]Harper[/name] is chosen far too much for girls nowadays so it’s beginning to lose it’s appeal as a boys name for many parents. FYI - [name]Angelina[/name] chose [name]Shiloh[/name] for her daughter because it was the name her parents had picked out for their first child before her mother miscarried the baby. [name]Just[/name] a little tidbit I picked up from my readings. Regards, [name]Mischa[/name].

I love [name]Shiloh[/name] on a boy. I think it has a soft, mysterious, but masculine feel. When paired with a solid middle name [name]Shiloh[/name] would absolutely be a great choice. The idea of brothers named [name]Shiloh[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] makes me swoon.

I’m not to bothered about religious opinions thankfully

I would be able to deal with my son having a name seen as some by feminine, but I’m worried that he wouldn’t if teasing about it ever arose. This is the issue I’ve had with [name]Harper[/name] too. Most names can encourage teasing; mine does a lot, and I never really cared. But then I know some people who really did care about having teasable names (my best friends name rhymes with Booby Farter and she used to cry from getting that all the time when we were little). So I’m not sure if I should be put off by that … It would all depend on how popular [name]Shiloh[/name] [name]Jolie[/name] [name]Pitt[/name] is by the time I have children, whether I’m living in the States or not then etc I suppose.

I don’t think the dog in the book is too much to be put off by, since I’m sure the teasing would only last for the duration of reading the book, if at all.

And I really do like the idea of having boys names [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Shiloh[/name] (I never really planned on having two boys, but this is changing my mind!) … so I might put it on my list for now, and see how things go

[name]Just[/name] gotta think of some middle names now …

[name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Shiloh[/name] really do go together well, wow!

Yeah, I agree the book thing probably wouldn’t be a big issue beyond reading it - just wanted to mention it for full disclosure. I’m not even sure how widely read the book is any more honestly. I used to think [name]Charlotte[/name] would be a hard name because of it being the name of a spider in [name]Charlotte[/name]'s [name]Web[/name] (still widely read) - but look how it’s taken off! I do vaguely wonder if part of why that name took a bit of a break was that book.

Here’s another thought: if [name]Shia[/name] LeBoeuf stays around sort of, I think that’ll maybe help balance out [name]Shiloh[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name]. Different name of course, but [name]Shia[/name] is even more feminine in sound to me than [name]Shiloh[/name] (I don’t know anything about the names’s history), and he’s out there in the public eye currently making [name]Shia[/name] seem more masculine in sound.

All best!

I immediately think of [name]Shiloh[/name] [name]Jolie[/name] [name]Pitt[/name] so I wouldn’t use this name. I live in NY and we love starbabies here so you would not escape that here, but you do have lots of freedom for an uncommon name.

Well whether I choose to move to NY or not will be a big decided too then!

I was thinking the thing about [name]Shia[/name] LaBoeuf too, I always thought [name]Shia[/name] sounded really feminine and he’s doing okay with it  I’m pretty sure there’s a male actor called [name]Shiloh[/name] too, is he in that [name]Red[/name] Riding Hood film?

I’m pretty much in love with [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Shiloh[/name] for brothers now  So hopefully I do get to use those together when it comes to it.

This exactly! And I love the book/movie about the dog [name]Shiloh[/name] to boot. I like it on a girl, but I love it on a boy.

[name]Hi[/name] genevie.
Unfortunately I personally associate [name]Shiloh[/name] with a not-so-nice character from [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s ‘Merchant of [name]Venice[/name]’ and have disliked the name ever since. Not sure how prominent that association is with other people though, as no-one else has mentioned it here after all. Thank you mischa for that info. on why [name]Angelina[/name] chose it, though, it’s gone up in my ratings slightly! If pushed, I think I would prefer it as a feminine name, even though a old school friend has a 2.5yo boy named [name]Shiloh[/name] - I have never met him. Perhaps it truly is a unisex name. All the Best…

If my angel had been a boy, his name would have been [name]Morgan[/name] and I had a lot of people go “isn’t that a girls name?” . headdesk. Personally, I like softer, “unisex” names for boys - hate them on girls.

I think [name]Shiloh[/name] on a boy is lovely - [name]Shiloh[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] as fantastic.

And for the record, I grew up in NY, spent the first 20 years of my life there and the only [name]Shiloh[/name] I met was a boy. (mind you this was the OTHER side of the state, not the city, but still).

I love [name]Morgan[/name] for a boy! Hate it on a girl though, how can anyone think it’s remotely feminine??
I live in the UK so it probably wouldn’t be as much of a big deal if I used a name like that. My best friend and I were discussing names with her American boyfriend today, he likes so many of those boys names for girls
