Shining A Spotlight On Kindred 🌿

Hello, berry friends! :white_heart:

[name_f][/name_f]

As might be obvious from my recent posts, I’ve really become a huge lover of [name_f]Kindred[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] for a little one. The name has been on my mind so much lately, and I can’t shake the feeling that it’d be a choice very fit for my little girl. I love the sound, its warmth, the friendship tie, and how it feels connected to nature in a way that I can’t explain. So, I wanted to ask a few questions about [name_f]Kindred[/name_f], and would love to see what everyone else thinks!

[name_f][/name_f]

On siblings to match:[name_f][/name_f] I feel like [name_f]Kindred[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] speaks for herself. She’s warm, friendly, a bit pensive, a lover of the outdoors, and wacky cool while still being approachable [name_f][/name_f]— a word-name that feels like people could have worn it for centuries. [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] is brilliant and cozy and kind, and somehow still manages to be an ā€œevery girl nameā€ while being so unique. Which leads to the problem of sibling names for me. She is such an ā€œevery girlā€ name and encapsulates what I feel is my naming style [name_f][/name_f]— a bit literary, a bit boho, a bit cottagecore, and certainly sometimes a bit wacky [name_f][/name_f]— which means there is an abundance of names that I think make for wonderful siblings to [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]. [name_f]Vision[/name_f], [name_f]Louella[/name_f], [name_f]Merit[/name_f], [name_m]August[/name_m], [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_m]Noble[/name_m], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_m]Earnest[/name_m], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_m]Worthy[/name_m], [name_m]Robin[/name_m], [name_f]Scout[/name_f], [name_m]Hopewell[/name_m], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_m]Alcott[/name_m], [name_f]Beverly[/name_f], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_m]Concord[/name_m], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_m]Hartwell[/name_m], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Elowyn[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Hildegard[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]June[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], [name_m]Moss[/name_m], [name_m]Jude[/name_m], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Rue[/name_f], Faye…all vastly different and all very well matched to [name_f]Kindred[/name_f], in my mind. I’m wondering which (if any) of these names the berries think match her well, what ones I should remove, what you’d personally name Kindred’s siblings, etc.

[name_f][/name_f]

On the general reactions to her:[name_f][/name_f] I know that quite a few of us here on Nameberry love [name_f]Kindred[/name_f], and would be very excited to meet a little one with the name, but I really want to hear everyone’s true thoughts on it. Whether you love it or hate it, I want to know, and if it fits, I’d love to hear the reasons why you feel the way you do about [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]. What are your overall thoughts about the name? How do you think others (name nerds and non-name nerds alike) would react to the name? Would it be well-loved and complimented, or would it be laughed at? As I said before, [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] feels very much like my girl, but I don’t want to bestow a name upon my child that would be difficult to wear.

[name_f][/name_f]

On the middle name:[name_f][/name_f] What middle names would you personally choose for [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]? What middle names would you suggest to me for [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]? At the moment, I’m loving [name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] and [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f], but I’m not settled on either one definitively, and am open to suggestions and ideas! Whether those are based on my lists or based on your own style!

[name_f][/name_f]

On my favorites:[name_f][/name_f] If you know me well enough to know my style, do you think [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fits well with my favorites? Not necessarily the ones shown in my user card, as they aren’t the most accurate representation of the names I’m likely to use, but mainly the ones on my Listography or ones I’ve talked about for a long while. If you’re still not sure, my current ā€œmost likely to be pickedā€ names are [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], and [name_f]Fern[/name_f] for my daughter(s) and [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] for my son(s).

[name_f][/name_f]

On the imagery:[name_f][/name_f] And lastly, and perhaps the least serious of all the questions, what vibes, imagery, or aesthetic would you use to describe [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]? Is there anything that sticks out to you about her? What do you imagine her family to be like? I’d love for my imagery of [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] to transfer, of course, but I’m mostly just curious about how others would see her!

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t want to wax poetic for days and days, so I’ll leave it here. [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to answer as many or as few questions as you want and have the time for. Thank you all for taking the time to read this heinously long post, I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Much love, [name_f]Mollie[/name_f]. :herb:

On siblings to match: I personally would avoid something along the lines of Vision or Marvel or Noble for a sibling name - I think Kindred toes the line of feeling a bit like a sort of… celebrity baby name edgy choice, and feeling like a cute cosy word name, so I’d avoid another bold, ā€œcoolā€ word name with her. But you also can’t go too classic/familiar/simple, like with Willa or Rosalie or Jude or August or Olive, because then Kindred really stands out as ā€œthe weird oneā€. And with something very charmingly vintage and old-mannish/ladyish like Earnest or Hildegard it feels too modern! From your list, I’d like Kindred with Merit, Honey, Basil, Birdie, Worthy (although while these 2 names go together they sort of give fundamentalist Christian mummy tradwife influencer vibes, which probably would not be your intention!), Scout, Alcott, Hartwell, Elowyn, Zipporah (same as Worthy a little bit but to a lesser extent), Marigold, Hawthorne and Rue.

General reactions: I’m a bit lukewarm on it I suppose! I do get the sort of warm, storybook vibe that I know you usually like to go for, and I think that vibe is very charming! On the other hand, I don’t love the sound itself (it reminds me of dated names like Kendra and Kendrick, and of the slang word ā€œkinā€ combined with ā€œdreadā€ + there’s a lack of nicknames, the most obvious one being Kinny which is also internet fandom slang). And I’m not sure I love the meaning? Going by the main definition of ā€œone’s family and relationsā€ it feels a tad bit generic, like naming a child Baby. But I suppose there are plenty of boys named Sonny, so it’s not odd or anything! Still, for all those reasons I think I like it much more as a middle name than I do as a first name.

As for whether it’d be mocked/perceived as odd by the general public, I don’t think so. It’s fairly short and easy to spell & pronounce, and resembles other more familiar names like I mentioned earlier. I can’t think of anything that would make it too ā€œcrazyā€ or easy to make fun of!

On middle names: I hate making combos so unfortunately I can’t be helpful here haha but I just wanted to say I love Fern Kindred!! It gives warm, fairy vibes. Kindred Louise isn’t my favourite - I think for a middle for Kindred I’d try to go for something familiar, to balance out Kindred’s uniquess, but not so plain that it seems like a complete stylistic mismatch next to Kindred. To me, Louise is a bit too plain next to Kindred (although I really like the name!). I’d go for more of a modern-feeling classic, along the lines of Kindred Rosalie or Kindred Louisa.

On your favourites: I’d say Kindred works well with the names on your list that are neither extremely adventurous (Worthy, Vision, etc.) nor very safe (Olive, Violet, Nora, etc.) It’s one of the Alcotts and Birdies and Agneses. So it does work for your long list, but I think it’s quite noticeably out-there compared to your realistic short list of Olive, Clementine and Fern.

I love the name [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]! She fits in well with your list too. I’ve received mixed feedback on her though. Some people loved her sweet, grounded, literary feel & others said she sounded like [name_m]Kendrick[/name_m] or [name_f]Kendra[/name_f]. She feels feminine to me, but I’d love to meet a boy named [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] as well! Some of my favorite [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] combos are [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], & [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f] :yellow_heart:
[name_f][/name_f]I also made a mood board for her ages ago, so here’s that lol

Certainly not my intention! I do agree, sometimes having two virtue names in a set feels super fundie, which is never what I’m going for.

[name_f][/name_f]

The lack of nicknames is something that bugs me too! Like what do I go with, Kindy? I definitely get liking it more as a middle…it certainly feels a bit eccentric. I’m glad you don’t think it’d be too ā€œcrazy,ā€ because like I said, it is definitely brave, but it does[name_f][/name_f] sound like a name? [name_m]Or[/name_m] at least in my mind that usually only chats about wacky names like this in the wonderful echo-chamber that is Nameberry.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m so happy you like [name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]! I adore her, but was worried she sort of doesn’t have the best flow, so it’s nice to know you enjoy her! And I love that you get warm fairy vibes. That’s always a plus in my book.

[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply, [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. It is very appreciated. :white_heart:

I do feel like she’d be prone to mixed feedback and opinions. I can see her being a brave name that people adore, but I can also see her being questioned. I understand both sides, to be fair! She’s definitely a brave pick. And I feel similar about preferring it on a girl, but thinking it’d be just as cool on a little guy. I love [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f] and [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f]. This moodboard is stunning! I especially love the freckle, the doe, the crown, and the mom and daughter pictures. Thank you so much for the reply. :white_heart:

[name_f][/name_f]

PS: I don’t think I’ve ever told you this, [name_f]Olive[/name_f], but your profile picture is beautiful! And I love your user (and of course your name ).

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] have already written such thoughtful replies and I’m scared anything I say will come across as an echo of their already well-written responses, but take any repeats as a +1!

[name_f][/name_f]

I totally agree [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] is a bit of an ā€œevery girl nameā€. At first it seems like quite a unique and surprising choice, but the more you think about it, the more it just… Works! Of your list, my top 5 favourite sibling choices are: [name_f]Scout[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_m]Hartwell[/name_m], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], and [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]. I also think these 6 could all be siblings, albeit a slightly eclectic bunch.

[name_f][/name_f]

I wouldn’t remove any of your ideas… Like you, I think they all work! I would personally do [name_m]Hartwell[/name_m] + [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] as my #1[name_f][/name_f] match, though!

[name_f][/name_f]

I do like [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]. I wouldn’t say I love it, but that’s because my mind seems to insist on reading it as ā€œKind-redā€, like the two words mushed together, even though I know that’s not right!

[name_f][/name_f]

I think any name can be laughed at, really. Some people hated my name growing up and that’s not a huge issue. In my opinion, I do think [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] would get some raised eyebrows. I don’t agree with this, but people are often opposed to things that are unfamiliar. I think there are plenty of names on my list that would evoke raised eyebrows as well (see: Kenya)!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f] Kindred!!!

[name_f][/name_f]

Yes, [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fits with your favourites.

[name_f][/name_f]

I agree with the moodboard that [name_f]Olive[/name_f] made (vibes!)

On the general reactions to her:[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] is definitely a GP for me. I would never use her for a real child, but I do like her. It has plus points in that it’s a word, and most people would know how to spell and say it, so that wouldn’t be too much of an issue. It is ā€˜out there’, but it also is ā€˜name-like’. Sorry if this isn’t making sense! But the start is like ā€˜Kim’, and end is like ā€˜fred’, etc.

[name_f][/name_f]

On the middle name:[name_f][/name_f] Somewhere on a ā€˜GP combo of the day’ thread I came up with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Butterfly[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], and I absolutely loved it [name_f][/name_f] Still think about it, and it’s still my favourite combo for [name_f]Kindred[/name_f], despite being completely unuseable (for me)!

[name_f][/name_f]

On your favorites:[name_f][/name_f] Yes I think she does! She’s definitely more out there than some of your other favorites, but she still fits :herb:

[name_f][/name_f]

On the imagery:[name_f][/name_f] For me it always makes me think of [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_m]Green[/name_m] [name_m]Gables[/name_m] (think kindred spirits), and all the imagery that comes with that…very cottagecore, soft sunlight through trees, good friends, warmth, and a bit literary.

Honestly, I don’t think you’d get mixed feedback if you were introducing her in person. The same thing happened to me with my daughter. When I was pregnant and people asked about names I would say we were thinking of I n d i g o. Some people liked it and others told me I needed to choose a new name lol. [name_m]Ever[/name_m] since she was born, I’ve only received positive feedback. As for a nickname, you could easily go with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Indie[/name_f] or [name_f]Indra[/name_f] :yellow_heart:[name_f][/name_f] Aww [name_f]Molly[/name_f], you are so sweet! I absolutely love your taste in names & always get excited when you post cause I get to glean through the comments lol.

Right? I feel like it’s so versatile! I think that was one of the reasons it shot up to the top of my list so quickly. It feels like it can be a sister name to most of my list, especially if I’m just looking for one sibling rather than three or four. Like are [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] technically[name_f][/name_f] matched…probably not. But does the vibe they give off match? Yes. I’m so glad you like [name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]. She’s my favorite at the moment, but I was a bit worried about the flow so it’s been nice to get positive comments on her! Thank you for the response, [name_f]Stella[/name_f]! :white_heart:

[name_f]Clove[/name_f] would be a beautiful sister name! These suggestions are all so fun.

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

The best part about word names, perhaps?[name_f][/name_f] You made total sense with your thoughts. I feel quite similar! It’s close enough to other actual names that it doesn’t feel overly whimsical or floaty like word names sometimes can. [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Butterfly[/name_f] is so fairy-like! I had [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] on my list as a braver combo, and I still think that’s beautiful too. I love the imagery you get from her. It is exactly what I am going for!

Aw, I feel honored. Your style is so warm and creative and I love it. :white_heart:

[name_f][/name_f]

Your girl’s name is so sweet! I think that is often the case. People feel brave enough to make comments about names before the baby is actually there, and then once they’re earth-side they realize that they probably shouldn’t and it’s not the right time or place for complaints [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Indie[/name_f] is a brilliant nickname for [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]! I actually like it more for a boy but like a lot of word names I think it’s truly unisex.

[name_f][/name_f]

It fits in with the modern types of word names that are getting popular, but it also has a vintage feel to it. To me it feels in line with virtue names. It feels like it would fit in with [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], [name_f]Charity[/name_f] and [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] etc and Biblical names that were popular around the time of the Puritans.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m in the UK so I might be wrong but I feel like in the US names like [name_f]Kendall[/name_f] and [name_f]Kennedy[/name_f] are fairly popular. I don’t hear them as much here. But [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] feels like it could be an alternative for those more popular names, at least in sound, which I think would help it feel less unusual. I think as a name it might get a few "huh?"s but it’s easily explained. It’s easy to pronounce and spell. You could also balance it out with a more popular middle name if you wanted to make it feel more ā€œusableā€. I would really love to meet a little [name_f]Kindred[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

I think a lot of the names you list would work well with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]. [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] could be paired with another word name, something more unusual and whimsical like [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_m]Hopewell[/name_m] and [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. I’d probably avoid [name_m]Worthy[/name_m] and [name_m]Noble[/name_m] because they feel a bit too matchy theme-wise with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] in a way for me. But I wouldn’t mind [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] ____ and ____ Noble/Worthy.

[name_f][/name_f]

It also works well with the old-school vintage names, in a similar vibe to the virtue names I mentioned before, and names that feel a bit quirky-yet-traditional. From your list I would combine [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] with [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_f]Louella[/name_f], [name_m]Earnest[/name_m] and [name_m]George[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

And finally I think [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] has a bit of a cottagecore vibe. It would go well with [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Elowyn[/name_f], [name_m]August[/name_m], [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] and [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m].

[name_f][/name_f]

I think [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fits well with your other favourites. Your style is a mix of whimsical words, soft vintage, retro diminutives and nature names. [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fits in well with that!

[name_f][/name_f]

You’ve probably seen it but one of my favourite NB lists is the Urban Prairie
[name_f][/name_f]one. I really like that description for how your name lists feel to me and [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fits really well with that vibe to me.

This is how I feel! Rationally, I know it’s a modern name, but something about it feels so vintage and warm to me.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m so glad you’d love to meet a [name_f]Kindred[/name_f]! She’s gotten so much love on this post, and it makes me so happy. Yay to the cottagecore vibe translating, and an even bigger yay to [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] fitting in with my style.

[name_f][/name_f]

I haven’t seen that list, I don’t think. I’ll have to check it out! Thank you so much for sharing and for the response, [name_f]Rainey[/name_f]! :white_heart:

On siblings to match:[name_f][/name_f] I think I’d go for something distinctive but maybe not too virtue-adjacent-and-wordy? So [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], [name_f]Merit[/name_f], [name_m]Noble[/name_m], [name_m]Concord[/name_m], and [name_f]Vision[/name_f] would be a bit much, but I wouldn’t mind [name_f]Scout[/name_f], [name_m]Moss[/name_m], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], or [name_f]Honey[/name_f], for example [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] too since it feels very name-y. Of those that you’ve listed, I think my favourites with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] are: [name_f]Louella[/name_f], [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_f]Scout[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_f]Elowyn[/name_f] (though I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] would go better), [name_m]Alcott[/name_m], [name_m]Moss[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], and [name_f]Faye[/name_f]. I’d probably avoid very popular or super classic choices like [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and [name_m]Jude[/name_m] with [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] myself, but I knew sibs [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] and it worked so :person_shrugging:[name_f][/name_f] I think if I was naming sibs to [name_f]Kindred[/name_f], I’d go with: [name_f]Cherith[/name_f], [name_f]Eadlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Abilene[/name_f], [name_m]Talmadge[/name_m], [name_m]Adair[/name_m], [name_m]Taliesin[/name_m], or [name_m]Sorrell[/name_m] myself.

[name_f][/name_f]

On the general reactions to her:[name_f][/name_f] I like the distinctive, wise, warm feel of [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] and the literary vibe. It feels reminiscent of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_m]Kingsley[/name_m], [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_f]Freda[/name_f] etc which helps it blend in too? I do think that some people might be shocked, confused, sceptical, or slightly off about it on first hearing it [name_f][/name_f]- however, it would quickly just become Kindred’s name? (I’ve found that with names like [name_f]Princess[/name_f], [name_m]Favour[/name_m], [name_f]Star[/name_f], [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f] etc.) A few things to bear in mind: the whole idea of ā€˜kinning’ with a character (not sure how ā€˜known’ this is outside the realm of the internet); ā€˜dred’ → dread?

On the middle name:[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and [name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] are nice [name_f][/name_f]- I’d like [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] or [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] too. In your style, I’d be thinking: [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Lenora[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. If I was choosing a middle, I’d go with: [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Mabli[/name_f] or [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].

On my favorites:[name_f][/name_f] I think it could work with some of them [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], and [name_m]Basil[/name_m] work to me, while [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] could fit too, but [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Kindred[/name_f] are too mismatched and different in popularity for my tastes.
