Short name for Josephine?

Our little [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a year now. We are mostly calling her [name_u]Josie[/name_u] but I find myself calling her [name_m]Jos[/name_m] (without the -ephine) a lot. The problem is, I don’t know how I would spell that!! What do you think - [name_m]Jos[/name_m], [name_m]Jose[/name_m]?

I am still not sure what short name we want to call her. We have tried out Josa, Fie, [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. There are so many options for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. Her middle name starts with a J so we could also use JJ. I do like [name_u]Josie[/name_u] but feel like I want something a little different.

Any other ideas? Any Josephines out there that go by a short name?

[name_m]Jose[/name_m]. Although some people might say ho-[name_m]SAY[/name_m] (Spanish pronunciation).

I like [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. But if you want something different, how about…

[name_f]Fifi[/name_f]
[name_u]Joey[/name_u]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f]

Some of these might be a stretch, but they could work!

As a Californian, I would definitely spell that [name_m]Jos[/name_m]. [name_m]Jose[/name_m] is another name entirely. I know a few Josephines that go by [name_u]Jojo[/name_u], but I really prefer [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. I mourn for JJ, because then you’ve lost the beautiful name and just gone for a letter. [name_f]Effie[/name_f] could work. [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] is what we call my cousin [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but it applies here too.

I like [name_u]Josie[/name_u] a lot, but I’m biased there (I go by [name_u]Josie[/name_u], actually, though my name is a totally different [name_u]Jo[/name_u]- name…)

I like [name_f]Posy[/name_f] for tiny young Josephines. Or those who are older, cool, and have the right personality for it.

I’d spell it [name_m]Jos[/name_m] or Joz. [name_m]Jose[/name_m] would be Spanish to me, and also I hate it when people spell me, [name_u]Josie[/name_u], as [name_m]Jose[/name_m].

I don’t mind JJ as a nickname though I wouldn’t use it all the time forever so I wouldn’t feel like I was “losing” [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

I would just spell it [name_m]Jos[/name_m], because if I were to see [name_m]Jose[/name_m] written down, I’d say it like the Spanish pronunciation.
I don’t really like Jj, or [name_u]Jojo[/name_u], but [name_u]Josie[/name_u] and [name_m]Jos[/name_m] are cute.
Other nicknames for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] could be [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_u]Joey[/name_u], [name_f]Posy[/name_f], [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], maybe even [name_f]Sophie[/name_f].

Another option could be Fini (pronounced [name_u]Fee[/name_u]-nee). In [name_f]Austria[/name_f] it’s a common nn for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (here it is often spelled [name_f]Josefine[/name_f], that’s where the F comes from).

I love [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

If you want to go with what you’ve been using, I would use the spelling [name_m]Jos[/name_m], as to me [name_m]Jose[/name_m] is prn HO-zay.

I would spell your current nn [name_m]Jos[/name_m]. I was going to suggest [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as well. I see other people love that nn for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] too.

[name_u]Joey[/name_u] is my favorite nickname for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because I feel it adds a whole different vibe to the more traditional, more buttoned-up [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. It adds versatility!

My favourites are [name_u]Jojo[/name_u] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] [name_f]Posy[/name_f].

My favorites are [name_u]Jo[/name_u] (like [name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u]) and [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. I think [name_m]Jos[/name_m] is a very sweet, organic nickname. I agree with the problems about [name_m]Jose[/name_m], and Joz is really cute but I’d probably pronounce it “jawz”. There’s always [name_u]Joss[/name_u], like Whedon, or Fi, though Fi makes me think of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

My godfather has a habit of writing long Os as ”, like J”s. Which is pretty darn cute, and probably my favorite.
I’m kind of in love with [name_m]Jos[/name_m] / J”s. And it’s what came naturally. I love when a good nickname just happens organically.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful replies! [name_m]How[/name_m] great that someone else wants to talk about my baby’s name! You have given me some great ideas and confirmed that [name_m]Jose[/name_m] looks more like the Spanish male name. For some reason I just think that [name_m]Jos[/name_m] looks unfinished. I love the idea of J”s! Hahaha, I can just picture her being and angsty teenager using that to look more cool! I will try some of these options as see what sticks…and maybe even just call her [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]! [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is kinda interesting, although I am not really sure how it relates to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]…we used to call her [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Lollipop while she was in my tummy so [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] would be kinda sweet… Fun fun!
