Sibling for Eleanor

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there, we’re due in [name_f]October[/name_f] with baby #2. Our 1.5 year old daughter is named [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], after two of her great-grandmothers. We typically call her the full “[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]”, no nickname at the moment. What I love about her name is that it’s both strong and feminine, and very classic with a lot of history. I also like that it’s not a feminization of a male name. I prefer girl names that are not flower/nature/gem words, but could bend that for the right name. Our last name starts with S, two syllables.

So let’s start with girls, here are some of my current favorites:
[ul]

[/ul]

Others we have occasionally mentioned: [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Briony[/name_f], [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (my mom’s name - I think it would be weird to use my living mother’s first name but my husband suggested it and genuinely loves the name.) I love [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Leona[/name_f] but wouldn’t use either with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

Boys:
My #1 pick is [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. One day six months ago I saw the name and felt sparks. Here is my silly hesitation that I don’t want to ignore: I did one of those things that plugs the name into a bunch of sentences, and all the “[name_m]Arthur[/name_m], stop hitting your sister!” And “I’m calling to speak to [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]?” ones sounded fine, but I got stuck on “I love you, [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].” I got this image of my 20-year-old son as this unlucky-in-love nerd - which based on his parents, he probably will be - and I don’t want to make things any harder for him with a kinda nerdy name! If we do go with it, middle names I’ve thought of are [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] (my husband’s name), [name_m]Guy[/name_m] (my husband’s grandfather’s middle name, I dig it) or [name_u]Francis[/name_u].

I feel like the other first names on my list only get weirder, though: [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m]. My favorite is actually [name_m]William[/name_m], but my husband has a brother named [name_m]William[/name_m] so that’s out (he has a big enough ego without that kind of boost.)

I would love your opinions and suggestions!

I love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]!! Runner ups would be [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. Some more suggestions that match [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] lengthwise:

[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]

[name_f]Valerie[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]

Hello, and congrats! Going to stick to girl names because I tend to be way better with those. Eleanor Caroline is a beautiful name, so classic and elegant. The name that immediately jumped out at me from your list is Jane. I think it’s one of the best names out there: Strong, refreshing, and tailored. It would be a lovely gesture to honor your mom, and I don’t think it’s tacky to honor a living relative. My cousin is named after his living grandfather, and to see his grandfather tear up upon learning his (likely last) grandson’s name was beautiful. I also think Jane is fantastic with Eleanor Caroline, especially as a middle. From your main list, I love Margot, Beatrice, and Clara, with Clara probably being my favorite. Cecily might run into your last name a bit, unfortunately, so would you consider Celia? There’s only one “s” sound that way. I love Gwendolyn, but I’m not sure about it stylistically with Eleanor.

I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. And [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].
Or even [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

Whichever names you choose, you’ll have distinguished sounding kids!
They’re all beautiful options.

I love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]! I like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] too but not with an S last name. I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]! Other ideas…

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

You did a great job naming your first child. I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

Here are my thoughts for number two:

Girls-

[name_f]Margot[/name_f]-I think this is darling with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] & in general. It does have more spunk than [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]-This is sweet. I agree that [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] with an ‘S’ last name may not flow the best.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]-Ditto for above.

[name_f]Clara[/name_f]-This is nice. It doesn’t super sparkle or anything, but it’s a solid classic name. Cute for a little girl and grows up well.

[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]-I think that [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] & [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] are really nice for sisters. [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] also sounds smart and strong, but still has a little spunk factor. I prefer the spelling of [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]. I actually think that [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] is nice with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] though. A little less common too, I believe.

[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]-Beautiful, and I mostly like it for the nn of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. Probably not great with your ln though.

[name_f]Viola[/name_f]-I think that this may have pronunciation issues, & it’s just a little bit too old lady at bingo hall for me.

[name_f]Briony[/name_f]-I feel like this is hard to say.

[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]-This is nice. It’s different for a little one, but not amazing.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]-I love it! It’s so pretty & charming. Simple and not overdone. Feminine, but not frilly. Works well on any age.

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]-I love [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. It’s short & sweet, but sort of artsy while still sounding classic. Another ‘S’ though.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]-Really nice, but maybe better as a mn to honor your mom.

[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] & [name_f]Leona[/name_f] are both too close to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], I agree. Both lovely though.

I’m really no help, because I really like most of your names, huh? Here are a few more suggestions:

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]

[name_f]Bianca[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bee[/name_f]

[name_f]Briar[/name_f]-Okay, it’s a floral name, but it’s similar to [name_f]Briony[/name_f], but easier in my opinion.

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilian[/name_f]

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]

[name_u]Marian[/name_u]

[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]

Boys-

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]-I think it’s fine. It does sound sort of nerdy, but there are a lot of names like that coming back, you know? Maybe by time he’s 20, it won’t seem as out there. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is a handsome classic, and if it’s your favorite I’d go for it.

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]-I want to like this name, but just can’t get on board. It’s fun though, and not that weird at all.

[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]-Okay, this one is a little weirder, but kind of cool. Are you a C.S. [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] fan? I would only use if so.

[name_u]Luca[/name_u]-I love this. I don’t feel like it necessarily fits with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but it’s handsome. Artsy and dashing.

[name_m]Percival[/name_m]-This one is a little weird & nerdy too. I personally think it’s cute, but a lot to live up to.

[name_m]Julian[/name_m]-This isn’t weird! This is my favorite boy name, and has been for many many years. [name_m]Julian[/name_m] seems like he’d be such a nice solid guy.

Boy suggestions-

[name_m]Abel[/name_m]

[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]

[name_m]Bastian[/name_m]

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]-This is nerdier than [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], but so cute!

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]

[name_m]Leo[/name_m]

[name_m]Milo[/name_m]

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]

[name_m]Peter[/name_m]

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

Girls: [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are lovely with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]! I also like [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (pr. [name_f]Claire[/name_f]-uh).

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]

Boys: I think [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] works wonderfully and don’t find it nerdy! I also really like [name_m]Julian[/name_m] with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].
