Sibling for Shea and Scout

Struggling with a baby name for [name]January[/name] arrival! We find out gender on the big day, but like to have a few ideas before going in. We have a boy, [name]Shea[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name] and a girl, [name]Scout[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name]. I don’t know that I want to keep the “S” theme as it wasn’t on purpose, we are looking at [name]Jameson[/name] as middle name for either gender for my late father…so opinions on our lists?

Help please

I think your boy names would all work really well with [name]Shea[/name] and [name]Scout[/name] particularly [name]Boone[/name], but for girls might I suggest…
[name]Piper[/name]
[name]Devin[/name]
[name]Blair[/name]
[name]Kelly[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Rory[/name]
[name]Shannon[/name]
[name]Story[/name]
[name]Brenna[/name]
[name]Sloane[/name]
[name]Quincy[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Lesley[/name]
[name]Erin[/name]
[name]Greer[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]

Thoughts on your list:

Girls
[name]Phoebe[/name] a sweet, sunny, happy name that works well on a young girl as well as an adult. Classical associations, a long history, not too common but still familiar. However-- it’s quite a bit different in style from [name]Shea[/name] and [name]Scout[/name], which are hip modern inventions.
[name]Zooey[/name] back when [name]Zooey[/name] Deschanel was born, nobody was named [name]Zoe[/name], so her parents spelled it out. Luckily you don’t have to anymore, and can go with the much more elegant and trim [name]Zoe[/name]. This too is sprightly like [name]Phoebe[/name], but it’s much more common. I do think it’s a bit closer to [name]Scout[/name], principally due to the zippy Z and the shorter length.
[name]Stella[/name] this is on-theme as an S name, so it might work. [name]Stella[/name] is an antique which has been revived on the heels of [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Bella[/name]. It’s sweet with a nice astronomical meaning (what little girl wouldn’t want to be thought of as a star?)
[name]Winter[/name] ([name]Winnie[/name]) [name]Winter[/name] is a modern name in the vein of your children’s names. I personally think it lacks substance, as do the other calendar names ([name]June[/name], [name]May[/name], [name]Summer[/name]). [name]Winnie[/name] is an adorable nickname but there are other ways of arriving at it ([name]Winsome[/name], [name]Wynne[/name], [name]Windham[/name]).

Boys
[name]Cash[/name] rocker-cool in the vein of [name]Johnny[/name] [name]Cash[/name], but of course a very common everyday word. [name]Don[/name]‘t know too if you want to name your son something so reminiscent of money.
[name]Finn[/name] this fits well with [name]Shea[/name]-- a sleek Irish boys’ name, also a common surname, which is unpretentious. This is a real winner.
[name]Sullivan[/name] on-theme with the S, but significantly longer than the monosyllabic [name]Scout[/name] and [name]Shea[/name]. Unless it’s a family name, I’d look elsewhere.
[name]Boone[/name] [name]Boone[/name] is a cool redneck, like Led [name]Zeppelin[/name] or [name]Woody[/name] Harrelson. It fits well with your children though will definitely carry a backwoods vibe.

Re:[name]Jameson[/name]: I assume your dad was named [name]James[/name]? It’s very sweet to honor a child of either gender after him, but for a daughter I wouldn’t necessarily put “son of [name]James[/name]” in the middle spot (a bit reminiscent of [name]Jenna[/name] [name]Jameson[/name], too). For a girl you could consider:

[name]Jamie[/name]
[name]Jamila[/name] (common Arabic name meaning "pretty)
[name]Janis[/name] (like [name]Joplin[/name])
[name]Jadis[/name] (fictional queen in [name]Narnia[/name])
[name]Janelle[/name]
[name]Jasmina[/name]
Jasleen

Thanks for the great advice and suggestions. For a boy if we did pick [name]Sullivan[/name] he would be called [name]Sully[/name] which brings the name more in line with the sibset in my opinion. I love [name]Story[/name], [name]Sadie[/name] and [name]Sloane[/name] for a girl (I also love [name]Sailor[/name] which was vetoed by my husband). Is the “S” theme important? Is it siomething we should carry forward with even though it wasn’t an intentional pattern?
Regarding the middle name for a girl, we were considering [name]Waverly[/name] as a substitute for [name]Jameson[/name] because of a positive association with the name and my father (who was [name]James[/name])…Is this going too different than the sibset?

For a boy, [name]Japhy[/name] [name]Jameson[/name]

For a girl, [name]Spring[/name] [name]Jameson[/name]

For either, [name]Cane[/name] [name]Jameson[/name]

I say, two S names is a happy coincidence; three is a pattern. It is absolutely not necessary to continue giving the same first initial-- your kids will feel a part of the family no matter what. It gives you a lot more freedom to consider names you like, too.

You have relatively classic middle names for your two kids, so using something like [name]Waverly[/name] (g) and [name]Jameson[/name] (b) would fit well, imo. However, I don’t think [name]Waverly[/name] fits optimally well with a first name that also ends in an -ee sound (like [name]Sadie[/name] or [name]Story[/name]).

[name]Sully[/name] is very sweet, but I don’t think [name]Sullivan[/name] [name]Jameson[/name] works for the same rhyme-y reason. If you use it, I’d pick [name]Sullivan[/name] [name]James[/name]. Conversely, a short name (picking one at random: [name]Chance[/name]) pairs well with [name]Jameson[/name].

Of your initial suggestions, I like the combinations [name]Sullivan[/name] [name]James[/name], [name]Finn[/name] [name]Jameson[/name], [name]Sadie[/name] [name]Janelle[/name], or [name]Stella[/name] [name]Waverly[/name].

Also-- [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Jasmina[/name], [name]Zoe[/name] [name]Janis[/name], [name]Marlowe[/name] [name]Jane[/name]

I really like [name]Sullivan[/name] for a boy. I was going to suggest [name]Sawyer[/name] as I think it would fit perfectly with [name]Shea[/name] and [name]Scout[/name].

So, I know it contributes to an S theme, but I just love [name]Stella[/name] and think it goes well with this sibset. [name]Winter[/name] would also work well, but I’m not sure how well [name]Winnie[/name] fits (though it is a sweet nickname). [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Zooey[/name] are also great names that go well with your other kids’ names and the chosen middle name of [name]Jameson[/name], but [name]Stella[/name] jumped out at me for some reason, followed by [name]Winter[/name], then [name]Phoebe[/name], then [name]Zooey[/name].

For the boys, I’d rank them as you ordered them: [name]Cash[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Sullivan[/name] and [name]Boone[/name]. While [name]Sullivan[/name] would work with the other S names, I think it’s just a bit cumbersome when paired with the short and sweet [name]Shea[/name] and [name]Scout[/name]. If you called him [name]Sully[/name], it would work very well with those sibling names, though I don’t think it goes as nicely with [name]Jameson[/name] as some of the others do. [name]Cash[/name] and [name]Finn[/name] would be easy to say and just sound so sharp, especially when paired with [name]Jameson[/name]. I ranked [name]Boone[/name] last just because I don’t love the name.

Oh, and I love entangler’s suggestion of [name]Sawyer[/name] for a boy (if you don’t mind doing the S theme). It fits perfectly!

I would keep the ‘S’ theme. [name]Stella[/name] and [name]Sullivan[/name] are nice!

Thank you so much for your help, I feel I am finally making some prgress on finding suitable combinations for this little one. I agree with the suggestions of [name]Sullivan[/name] [name]James[/name] as opposed to [name]Jameson[/name] as it is an awkward phrasing, especially considering our last name ends with an “N” as well. I am not a fan of [name]Sawyer[/name] and worry about [name]Finn[/name] becoming a popular choice due to Glee and [name]Tori[/name] Spelling using it on her baby. But we clearly favour short snappy names so more boy options are always welcome.
As for the girls names, we both like [name]Stella[/name] but I am not sure I love it. I like the alliteration of [name]Winter[/name] [name]Waverly[/name] (like her sister [name]Scout[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name]) but I know this combo really isn’t on my husband’s radar. I am really worried that I will end up settling for a name I like and not one I love so help and suggestions are genuinely appreciated.

I love [name]Phoebe[/name] for a girl!! I’m not fond of [name]Jameson[/name] as the middle name, though. It means “son of [name]James[/name]”, which I only find appropriate on a boy. However, since it has a connection to your family, I’d say it’s fine. I wouldn’t keep the “s” theme, I think it gets cheesy after a while. [name]Cash[/name] is okay for a boy, the rest I’m not fond of.
