Sibling for Teddy

I’d like to apologize in advance for the long post.

We’re expecting a second little one in [name_u]June[/name_u], a younger brother or sister to [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] who we call [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. I’d really love a similar old, vintage style name. My husband isn’t as set on this rule.

For a girl my husband has shockingly liked everything I’ve suggested. I’ve always loved the name [name_f]Clara[/name_f], so was planning on [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]. [name_f]Louise[/name_f] is after my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] (I feel like this LO needs a middle name from my husband’s side of the family). However, my middle name is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], as is my mom’s and great grandmother’s. Growing up I always thought I’d use it as the middle name for a little girl, but now I don’t feel like I can. However, I recently had the idea of using [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for the first name and calling her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for short. Thoughts? Are [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] too similar sounding? Not sure what we’d then use for a middle name. Our options so far are [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and [name_f]Gloria[/name_f].

Boys name have been a much bigger struggle. My husband has vetoed almost every name I’ve suggested. We definitely want to use my FIL’s name, [name_m]Albert[/name_m], for a middle name. The three names we haven’t completely ruled out are:

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] - My favorite. I do worry about popularity, but then again [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is becoming much more popular, too. While my husband didn’t veto the name he also doesn’t seem to love it. He keeps mentioning that we’d be stuck with nickname [name_m]Hank[/name_m], but I don’t think a nickname is necessary.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] (?nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u]) - My husband really likes this one. Honestly, my issue with it is the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. While I do like the name, when we were pregnant with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] we had an aunt who went on a lengthy rant about how terrible the name is and it’s kind of ruined it for me.

[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Sully[/name_u]) - I don’t know that this fits as a classic name. My husband really like the alliteration with our last name (which starts with S).

Names that we’ve ruled out because we have someone close to us with the name/names my husband has vetoed: [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], any variation with [name_u]Max[/name_u] or [name_m]Archie[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m].

Any insight or new name suggestions that we haven’t ruled out would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

I do like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] (or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]) way more than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” but I do think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] works with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. Though it feels more trendy than vintage to me, if that’s something you mind.
From your list I like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] the most.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] is adorable. I think that [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] would be beautiful for a little sister, but [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would be really nice too. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] maybe flows a little better, but [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] isn’t bad. I like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], & it’s fine w/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. There are more interesting nns for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] though like [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Bess[/name_f], [name_f]Bette[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f] & [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].

Here are my thoughts on your short boy list:

[name_m]Henry[/name_m]-I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but it’s soooo popular. I personally think that [name_m]Hank[/name_m] is charming, but I wouldn’t worry at all that he’ll be called [name_m]Hank[/name_m] against your will. I know a zillion little Henrys, & have never heard one of them called [name_m]Hank[/name_m].

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]-This is fine. It’s kind of different, but not too different. I just never personally cared for it, because it just sounds a little harsh to me. I’m into more gentle sounding boy names usually. I love the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u], but what a bummer that it’s been ruined for you. I think that a [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is more likely to be called [name_m]Griff[/name_m] unless you specifically tell people he’s called [name_u]Finn[/name_u].

[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]-I like this! It’s not terribly common, but a simple solid name. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] & [name_u]Sully[/name_u] are perfect for brothers. Sweet, friendly & a little spunky.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I know it’s not a name you mentioned but I would suggest [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] as a beautiful name that would be a nod to both [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Louise[/name_f] in the middle.

Also, what a shame your aunt ruined [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] for you, I think that would be a wonderful choice for you! Previous posters have made some great suggestions too, I especially like [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] and [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m].

Good luck!

I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and also the suggestion of [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. I’m not that fond of using [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a nickname as it has been sooo overdone that it seems there are young Ellies everywhere. My favourite on your boy list is [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and I think alliteration in a name makes it memorable, in a good way. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Sully[/name_u], or [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f], are my favourites and make lovely sibling sets.

Thanks for the feedback! You’ve all made me feel better about [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. I had a moment of hesitation when I realized I’d be losing [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a middle name. But I do agree that [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is very overdone right now and I’m honestly not a huge fan of any of the other nicknames (except [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and we have a good friend who just named her daughter that).

You also had some great suggestions for boys that we hadn’t thought of yet. I’ll run the lists by my husband and let you know what he thinks!

I think [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is great with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and don’t think [name_m]Hank[/name_m] or any nickname is necessary. I’ve know many Henrys of all ages and not one has been called anything but his full name (I’m in Australia though and don’t think [name_m]Hank[/name_m] is a name/nickname that’s really used here).

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is not my favourite but it’s quite nice, and I don’t necessarily see [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a definite nickname if you don’t want it to be one. I know a little [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and he’s just called [name_m]Griffin[/name_m].

[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] nickname [name_u]Sully[/name_u] is great! Not exactly of the same style but somehow I think it works extremely well with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]!

Whilst [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is my favourite I think [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]/[name_u]Sully[/name_u] is perfect for you! Another that came to mind is [name_m]Chester[/name_m]/[name_m]Chet[/name_m]. For a girl I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] much more than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], although I think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is fine with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is just so elegant and has that great vintage feel, just like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. Some others that could work nicely are [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], or [name_f]Clementine[/name_f].

Unfortunately my husband has vetoed all of the name suggestions so far. Boy names have been so hard for us!

I appreciate the feedback on [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. I was so focused on it not matching [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] stylistically, but you’ve all helped me to get past that and see it as a real possibility for this LO.

As much as I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m], I just hate how popular it is right now. Such a bummer.

I just don’t know that I can get on board with [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], but we’ll see. Maybe something will change between now and [name_u]June[/name_u].

If anyone can think of any other boy names that you think would work for us we definitely appreciate the suggestions!!

I think we’re set on [name_f]Clara[/name_f] if it’s a girl. I love the suggestion of [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], such a great nod to both sides of the family! Thanks @bonhomieconsomie !

Names that strike me as great with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] include [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I really love [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]!

[name_m]Harry[/name_m] is another traditional nickname for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] - and it’s the one that comes to mind first for me, before [name_m]Hank[/name_m]. Does [name_m]Henry[/name_m]-called-[name_m]Harry[/name_m] do anything for you? [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_m]Harry[/name_m] would be cute, and [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is much less popular than [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. He could also be just [name_m]Harry[/name_m] or even [name_m]Harrison[/name_m].

I agree that [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] doesn’t really have that antique-revival thing that [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] does, since it’s a transferred surname, but it is still very much a classic style of name, and it has a long history of use as a given name! I think it would work great with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].

I like both [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], but unfortunately we know way to many people with these names :frowning:

I like both [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], but unfortunately we know way to many people with these names

I like both [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], but unfortunately we know way to many people with these names :frowning:

I actually love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and I haven’t completely ruled them out as options, even though my husband’s initial response was not great… Maybe they’ll grow on him?? Haha

Upon reading all the later posts showing the vetoing of several intimidatingly long lists of names and the tipping of the scales towards Clara for a girl, I’ll strike any names on my list that I’ve noticed are on the vetoed ones but otherwise keep my initial response:

I think Elizabeth Louise and Clara Louise are both lovely. You can decide which first name to use if the baby does turn out to be a girl when you meet her, since in my opinion Elizabeth and Clara as names belong to two rather different types of girl. I do think Clara Louise flows a little better than the other and would be less awkward for a little kid. Clara wouldn’t really need a nickname, but if Ellie seems overdone there’s always the classic nickname Lizzie and the end-nickname Beth or Bethy (like Beth March in Little Women) though I admit Bethy sounds strange. Clara does have a similar feel to Theodore, and Teddy and Clara are quite good together.

Why Hank? Harry is the first nickname to come to mind when I think of shortening Henry, though the popularity of both names can be an annoyance.

Griffin is not a name I’m a fan of myself, though I’m more than okay with Finn as both name and nickname. Sad that it’s been ruined for you, but completely fine and work-aroundable.

I love Sullivan, though I wouldn’t use it myself because I’m not quite as big a fan of Sully. Still, Sully and Teddy work just fine as sibling nicknames, and I like the idea of alliteration too.

Some suggestions for the boy name that might match the style of Theodore:
Lucas (nn Lou, Luke, Cass)
Laurence/Lawrence (nn Laurie, Larry, or Rence)
Lysander (nn Sandy or Andy)
Percival (nn Percy)
Raphael (nn Raffy or Raph)
Silas
St. Clair/Sinclair (nn Clair?)
Tristan/Tristam/Tristran/Tristram (the latter two are more fictional character-y, in my opinion, but I might as well include them) (nn Triss)
Walter (nn Wat, Walt, or Wally)

I also like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]! [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] & [name_u]Sully[/name_u] are so sweet together. A similar name that comes to mind is [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].

If you & DH like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] for a girl, maybe [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] for a boy?

Other names:
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]

[name_u]Stanley[/name_u] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Truman[/name_m] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] for [name_m]Henry[/name_m]! And [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is a great choice.
