Sibling Name for James

Me and my husband are planning our second baby. Looking for names to go with our first son James—but we call him [name_f]Jaime[/name_f].

my name tastes are all over the place.

For girls I love names like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] — because his brother has a daughter named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] already.

For boys I love names like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Logan[/name_m], [name_m]Cameron[/name_m], [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m], [name_m]Hudson[/name_m], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]

But then I also like names like [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_m]Brahms[/name_m], [name_m]Rhys[/name_m], [name_m]Alder[/name_m], [name_f]Ellerie[/name_f], Noen, [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], Quinnevere, Euler

I like long proper timeless names and also somewhat unique names — interesting names that aren’t used as much or never heard of before

Would love suggestions for either gender!
Our first son is [name_m]James[/name_m] “Jaime” [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

Firstly congratulations! And, I adore that you have a little [name_f]Jaime[/name_f]. I do not hear that nn enough for boys. It seems like you’re trying to find that sweet spot between recognizable and not saturating the daycares for your second child. And a good nickname to go with [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] wouldn’t hurt either! Here’s a few suggestions. First the girls!

Isobel (a less-used Scottish version of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. Could still be [name_m]Izzy[/name_m] or Belle)
Sylvia (a nice alternative to Olivia)
Gemma
Clementine (either of these two could be a little Emmy)
Cecilia (Cece)

Boys:
Simon (Sy)
Benson (Bennie)
Arthur (Artie)
Calvin (Cal)
Nathaniel (Nat, [name_m]Natty[/name_m] or Nate)

I love [name_m]James[/name_m]! Such a timeless, universal name that can really be paired with anything and still works. Of your lists, I would keep:

Eleanor (and nn Ellerie, Ella or Nora) - but this might be an easy cut for me as so many Elle/Ellie names so won’t fit into your wish for something distinct
Margaret (nn Maggie, Meg, Peggy, Daisy - you could even just use Margot as a first)
Emmeline (nn Emma)
Adelaide (nn Ada, Daisy, Laidy)
Would cut Alyvia because the spelling is unusual compared to James - and I think I’d just go for a different name than a cousin’s unless it was my absolute love. I would go Livia if it’s still up top of list but think you have enough to lose this one. And unless you’re keep on two J names, would keep Josephine for second spot. And Bella/Bella names are so pretty but have lost some sparkle to me from overuse. I like the suggestion of Isobel to freshen up.
Blythe (unless two one syllable names abrupt?)
Cleo (though would be inclined to Cleo use as nn for Clementine with James Thomas - eg Clementine Olivia nn Cleo)

You might also like: Anna, Tabitha (nn Tabby/Tibby), Rosemary (nn Romy, Rosie), Mary (eg Mary Isobel nn Maisie, Mabel), Mabel, Daphne, Harriet, Flora, Frances/Francine nn Francy/Franny, Lucia (nn Lucy, Lulu, Cia/Sia), Bronte, Tallulah, Matilda (nn Tilly, Tilda), Lydia, Amybeth.

Sebastian
Henry - though of the four, def the most popular
Matthew
Cameron
Bennett (I really like Bennett with James)

You might also like: Arthur, Emrys, Lucas, Archer, Benedict, Tobias (Toby), Isaac, Simon, Christopher (Kit), Darcy, William (nn Will or Liam), Rupert, Samuel, Nicholas, Oliver (a better way to use Olivia as a first, I think!), Philip (Pip), and Peter.

With James Thomas, I would lean into the classic, handsome feel of the names and go for something storybook sounding but not too cutesy, not modern, and not cre8tive.

James/Jamie is so cute! Congratulations!

You have a very nice list! [name_f]My[/name_f] personal opinions on the names:

Josephine—I really like this one, especially the nickname [name_f]Josie[/name_f]! However, [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] are matchy, which is okay if that’s what you like, but it’s not my favorite.

Margaret—Very proper and timeless, it’s gorgeous.

Eleanor—A beautiful name with many nickname options!

Isabelle—Very pretty, but also very popular. It’s not as popular as [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], but it’s still up there, at least where I live. I do like all the potential nickname options though!

Naomi—This is just not my personal favorite. I don’t have anything against it, but for me it’s just eh.

[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] nn Emma—I’ve never met anyone named [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] before, and I really like it! [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is, of course, very popular, but it’s still a very cute nickname!

Adelaide—An equally gorgeous yet less popular variation of Adeline/Adelyn! Where I live, you can’t go anywhere without meeting one, so [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] feels very refreshing!

Alyviah—If you’re avoiding [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] because of someone you know, you might want to avoid [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] as well… but it totally depends on how often you’re seeing [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. If you see her once a year or less, you totally get away with it, but if they’re seeing each other often it might be confusing. Not to mention that [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] has been so popular for so long. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it’s spelled differently, there would likely be an [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] in her classroom or sports team or whatever. I also think that [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] looks very trendy next to [name_m]James[/name_m], which is a very classic name.

Sebastian—I want to like this one but… for me it’s really hard to ignore the image of a bright red crab that comes to mind whenever I hear this name. It’s a nice name, so if you don’t have that association, it’s perfect with James/Jamie!

Henry—Henry is one of my favorite boy names! Recognizable, yet not too popular!

Logan—I like the name, but there are just way too many Logans where I am that I have grown tired of it, which is unfortunate because it’s a very nice name!

Cameron—A nice, simple name that goes well with [name_m]James[/name_m]!

Matthew—I like the name [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], but I am not a fan of the nickname [name_m]Matt[/name_m].

Isaiah—I like it as a whole, but for some reason, I don’t like it a lot with [name_m]James[/name_m].

Hudson—I really like [name_m]Hudson[/name_m]! It’s strong and fun!

Bennett—I personally like [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] much more than [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]!

Isla—It’s pretty, but just not my personal favorite.

Cleo—I love this name. It’s a name I can imagine on anyone—shy, outgoing, artsy, sporty, etc. It’s a beautiful name everyone will recongnize but it’s not popular! This has to be my personal favorite from your list!

Brahms—I feel like it has a very different vibe then [name_m]James[/name_m].

Rhys—I like it, but similarly to [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f], for me it just looks so trendy next to [name_m]James[/name_m].

Alder—Not my personal favorite, but still nice with [name_m]James[/name_m]!

Ellerie—I like it, but I prefer the [name_f]Ellery[/name_f] spelling.

Noen—It feels very rare compared to [name_m]James[/name_m].

Kinsley—I like the name alone, but I’m not loving it with [name_m]James[/name_m].

Blythe—This name feels to me the same as [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] and Rhys… I guess I associate names with Ys as trendy for some reason!

Quinnevere—I’ve never heard of this before! Not sure if you meant Guinnevere, but [name_f]Quinn[/name_f] is a nice nickname option!

Euler—I’m not sure how to pronounce this one. I’ve never seen/heard of it before!

Some other names I can think of based on people named [name_m]James[/name_m] I have met:

[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

Good luck!

With [name_m]James[/name_m] - and your requirements - I think the following of your options work:

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]

[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Hudson[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhys[/name_m]

I’d dismiss [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] (still essentially the same name as her cousin)

[name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_m]Logan[/name_m], [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_m]Rhys[/name_m], [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], and [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_m]Hudson[/name_m] are my favourite sets!

From your lists:
Josephine–adore! nicknames [name_f]Jo[/name_f] and [name_f]Josie[/name_f]! And would sound so sweet with [name_m]James[/name_m]. [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and Josie!!!
Margaret–obsessed. [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]!
Eleanor–I’m a fan. [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
Isabelle–not really a fan. Sounds too sleek and modern to me–not so vintage like [name_m]James[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
Naomi–same as Isabelle–it seems more modern and hippie than classic and timeless.
Emmeline–soooooo cute!!! [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] would be so cute!!
Adelaide–adore this name! nn [name_f]Delly[/name_f] or [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Addy[/name_f]!
Alyviah–if you have a niece named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], I don’t think changing the spelling is going to do anything to help with confusion. I’m assuming it would be pronounced the same as [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], so it doesn’t really mitigate the issue.
Isla–a bit too trendy for me–doesn’t seem like it really fits with [name_m]James[/name_m] thomas
Cleo–soooo cute, but it doesn’t have much nickname potential, which seems kinda important for Jaime’s sister
Ellerie–not in love with the spelling–I prefer [name_f]Ellery[/name_f], but it’s still not one of my faves from your list.
Kinsley–sounds wayyy too modern and trendy
Blythe–such a sweet and strong name! Same issue as [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], though–I can’t think of any natural nicknames.
Quinnevere–certainly interesting. I’ve never seen it before. I would definitely go with a more established name, but ultimately if you’re okay with a hybrid name then go for it!
Euler–pronounced like Euler’s number? I find that sound unappealing–it just sounds like oil to me.
Sebastian–this is my biggest hot take on this website, but I’m really not a [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] fan! It just sounds kinda grating to me!
Henry–classic. [name_m]Perfect[/name_m] for a brother for [name_f]Jaime[/name_f]!
Logan–similar to Isabelle–feels too sleek and modern.
Cameron–same as [name_m]Logan[/name_m], more of a trendy gender-neutral name than a classic boy’s name like [name_m]James[/name_m]
Matthew–cute!! [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and Matty!!
Isaiah–very strong biblical connection and I can’t think of any super natural nicknames…
Hudson–same as [name_m]Cameron[/name_m]
Bennett–very cute, [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and Benny!!!
Brahms–this is super cool, but nicknames?
Rhys–gorgeous, but same issue as [name_m]Brahms[/name_m]
Alder–okay, this one hadn’t occurred to me before, but this is super cute! [name_f]Jaime[/name_f] and [name_f]Ally[/name_f]!

Go for a proper classic. Emma or Matthew - their popularity has peaked and they’re beautiful, timeless names.

Other suggestions: Elizabeth , Anna/Hannah, Lucy, Andrew (Andy or Drew), Charles (Charlie), Robert (Robbie), David, William

I’ve just seen Andrew is your father’s name. Use it as the middle. Charles Andrew?

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is my favorite of your girl names! Nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] :bubbles:

[name_m]Logan[/name_m] :herb: is my favorite of your boy names. Although I don’t think it needs a nickname, it still goes well with James/Jaime.

Thank you!
I love [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] too and my dads name is [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] so I had also thought about naming our potential boy after him but maybe [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] as his middle name

[name_m]Logan[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] are my faves so far for boys!! I was thinking like [name_m]Logan[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] maybe (Logan is after my brother)

and girls I absolutely love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is after my wonderful grandmother.

On a side note:
I had thought of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but my husbands, brother has a daughter named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_m]Michele[/name_m]. And I was like they would be cousins with the same first name, last name and initials of OML.
I loved that name since forever, and It almost feels like I can’t use it, or I would have to change the spelling or tweak the name itself with it being similar like livia or olive. But I’m not the biggest fan of those. I liked [name_f]Alyviah[/name_f] and nn ayla (aye-la). But the spelling itself feels different than a classic timeless name — I just don’t know
