I am due with #3. We are not finding out the gender so I need one of each name and we are struggling for the first time. Our kids names are:
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] ( I love her name but it has gotten a bit too popular)
Sullivan( my son’s name which I am obsessed with. I really can’t find another name I love the way I love his name. )
I am looking for a name that is somewhat uncommon without being too weird and goes nice with my other kids names.
For girls names we have:
[name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] ( this is a strong contender and I think fits well with our sibling names)
[name_u]Waverly[/name_u] ( I think this is a beautiful name but I worry it’s in the trend of made up names I don’t really care for like [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f], paisleigh etc.)
Boys names. We don’t have a top contender. We have:
[name_m]Welles[/name_m] ( love but worry it’s too different from our other kid’s names)
[name_m]Fisher[/name_m] ( probably my favorite but my husband isn’t loving it)
[name_u]Finnegan[/name_u] ( I like and think fits the best with our kids names but somewhat common)
Any opinion on these names or if anyone has a great name I am missing that would be better. I am stumped.
I think I do prefer [name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] of the two although I wouldn’t worry too much about the --leigh trend with [name_u]Waverly[/name_u]. I will probably keep my suggestions to 3ish syllables since you seem to like those best.
Other options I think strike that balance & pair well with the sibs:
I think [name_u]Finnegan[/name_u] does go best but I also don’t think [name_m]Welles[/name_m] is too far gone. [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] is a bit off in vibe IMO.
[name_u]Welcome[/name_u] to Nameberry! [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] are great together.
Thoughts on your current contenders:
[name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] – unexpected! [name_f]My[/name_f] primary association is figure skater [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] [name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] and the subsequent coverage of her attack, but I imagine that connection will continue to fade with time.
[name_u]Waverly[/name_u] – This is my favorite of your girl options! While it shares sounds with [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Paisleigh[/name_f], etc., it doesn’t strike me as made-up at all.
[name_m]Welles[/name_m] – I don’t think it’s different from your other children’s names as all are surnames turned first names. The [name_m]Wells[/name_m] spelling might make it a bit more familiar (currently ranked #466 in the US).
[name_m]Fisher[/name_m] – I don’t mind it, and I think it fits well with [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. Might rank lower since your husband doesn’t love it.
[name_u]Finnegan[/name_u] – Cute! [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is definitely having a moment right now, so maybe not the best choice if you’re looking for uncommon.
For what it’s worth, [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] is the name of Edinburgh’s main train station, which itself takes its name from a series of books published more than 200 years ago (I did just look this part up!) So while it might feel made up or trendy it has historical usage as a place name, even if not until much more recently as a girls’ first name.
I like [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] as a girls’ name for you, [name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] feels a bit like a smoosh of your other kids’ names - the start of [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] and the end of [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] with its own middle.
[name_m]Welles[/name_m] doesn’t feel too different to your other kids’ names and I think it’s my favourite of your list.
Kerrigan-I think that this fits in well too. It’s not my personal cup of tea, but I agree that it fits well style wise with [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] & [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. I don’t personally love the idea of K/K sisters. It’s nice for everyone to have their own initial. I used to know the cutest little girl called Carrigan.
Waverly-Love this for you. [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] isn’t made up! I think it’s just a Welsh surname. Completely perfect with your crew. It’s easy but not at all popular and reminds me of the ocean.
A few other girl ideas-
Aberdeen!!!
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f]
[name_u]Haley[/name_u]
[name_u]Mallory[/name_u]
[name_u]Romilly[/name_u]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
Boys-
Welles-Is this said ‘Well-iss’? It’s a little confusing. I think that I really like [name_m]Wells[/name_m] for you though.
Fisher-This just reminds me of a dull looking fish. And I love the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u], but somehow that reminds me of a pretty fish!
Finnegan-Love this for you & love it in general. I don’t think that it’s popular. Maybe just [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is getting a bit more common, but I think it’s not too bad.
i love kerrigan for a girl, and i think finnegan really isn’t that common and would go lovely. the one thing i dont like as much is kennedy, sullivAN, kerrigAN/finnegAN but that’s kind of just be being nitpicky baha!!
I agree with the above that Kerrigan is too much of a smoosh of your other two names, copies the rhythm of Sullivan and shares the K of Kennedy and of course the syllable count of both. It’s too matchy for me! (I also still associate the name with the ice-skater with the fairly recent movie reigniting it).
I would try for something more stylistically in sync but not necessarily the same syllable count etc.
Eg I think Welles/Wells is a great choice! (It still has the double LL connection to Sullivan)
Keep in mind, for most of the child’s life, they will be introducing themselves / interacting without people hearing their siblings’ names. So long as they’re of the same genre and no sibling is getting a bad deal, I think it’s fine! And I personally don’t love when starting letters and ending sounds repeat - or things are too matchy - so Finnegan would be off the list for me.
I got so excited when reading your kiddos names and then your ideas for baby #3. I love surname names! Last names as first names are so so fun!
[name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] fits perfect into that role, as does [name_u]Waverly[/name_u]. It’s not made up, but indeed an [name_f]English[/name_f] surname. Other more unique surnames you could consider are [name_u]Hollis[/name_u], [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_u]Leighton[/name_u], and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Finnegan[/name_u] on your boys list. Have you considered [name_u]Finley[/name_u] for a girl?
[name_m]Welles[/name_m] is unique but so are so many names now, so if you love it go for it!
[name_m]Branagan[/name_m], [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], and [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] were on my short list for boys (but alas! We have all girls) And they seem to go well with you list too.
