DH and I are expecting in the spring. We have a 3 year old named [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] before this pregnancy DH and I have been agonizing over girls names! We haven’t even come close to agreeing in 3+ years, until he recently suggested [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] ([name_f]Marie[/name_f]?). I kind of love it. Boys names are easier for us, and we have long loved [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. However, I’ve been following the post(s) on overly matchy sib sets… while I think I know what most will say, I need to read it anyway…
Are [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] too matchy?
What about [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]?
First off, I love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (a lot)! I also really love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as siblings. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s matchy, I personally love the mythical creature link, although things might get a little tricky if you have anymore children (or maybe you could just use another Greek name?). [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] are too close in sound for me personally. Perhaps you could consider a name close in style to [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but with a slightly different sound. I’m not very good at suggestions, but maybe:
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
I’m not sure how helpful that was, but I hope it was at least a little useful.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] sound great together. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] are too matchy but I adore both names. Others you may like are
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] / [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]/ [name_f]Riona[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Heidi[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Winona[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_u]Remy[/name_u]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Jordana[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f] has a similar sort of sound to phoebe without sharing too many letters with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]
I love griffin hugh by the way
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] are definitely too matchy. They start with the same four letters and the same syllable.
I have to agree with everyone, [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] go great together.
As for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], I think it could work if you didn’t have anymore children, but yes it is very similar to [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
Some Suggestions:
Keeping with the greek mythology feel…
Chimera - also a mythological creature
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] - muse of poetry, plus it has the same ending as [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Clio[/name_f] - muse of history
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - same ending
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Electra[/name_f] - same meaning
[name_f]Helen[/name_f] - the face that launched a thousand ships, same meaning as [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhea[/name_f]
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] - goddess of the moon
Terpsichore - muse of dance
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] - muse of comedy, I personally love this with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]
[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f]
[name_f]Urania[/name_f] - muse of astronomy
Others I think feel similar to [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]:
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Ravena[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
hope these bring some inspiration
I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] sound very(!!!) cute together… but they are, indeed, very matchy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you had 3 and went with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] I still think they all make great sibsets. If you absolutely love it, and you and hubs agree to it, don’t let the matchy-matchy stop you!! Give her a longer middle name (or perhaps two), maybe something classic to fit in with middle [name_u]James[/name_u] for [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] has a nice ring to it, though maybe that is too matchy for [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] (which is a great name, btw). My mom and aunt are [name_f]Denise[/name_f] and [name_u]Patrice[/name_u], Grandmother [name_f]Rose[/name_f] didn’t give two hoots if people thought the rhyming was too close!
One possibility, if you love the Ph- beginning, would be [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]. It’s a Greek name meaning “light” and is included in mythology - though the story isn’t the best (alas, so many wonderful mythological names share this), I don’t think this should deter people if they love the name. [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] has also been used a few times more recently, perhaps distilling the original story. I personally love the connection to light and the sun, thus maintaining a link to [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] could also be choices if you like P- names. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] especially could be another indirect link to the [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] in mythology, in that Chinese water dragons are said to keep a pearl.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
And, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] could be moved to a middle name to keep something you really love if you just can’t use it as a first.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_f]Callista[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & Aesara [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (Aesara was an ancient Greek philosopher, notable because she is one of the few documented female philosophers)
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & Jadzia [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (Jadzia is a modern, edgy dimunitive of heavy Polish [name_f]Jadwiga[/name_f])
Something different…
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_u]January[/name_u] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] (even though you said you’re due in [name_u]December[/name_u]…)
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] has its origins in Greek mythology as a feminine form of [name_m]Phoebus[/name_m], an epithet for [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. Going with that theme…
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_f]Solstice[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (for the winter solstice and goddess of the dawn)
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
You could go totally modern with a name like [name_u]Piper[/name_u].
You could go with a name that pays homage to her winter-time birth.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Neva[/name_f]/[name_f]Neve[/name_f]/[name_f]Nieve[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_u]Noel[/name_u]/[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_f]Eira[/name_f]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] & [name_u]Winter[/name_u]
That’s about all I got right now. I realize I stray a bit farther from the beaten path with my name loves, but I do hope the helps a bit.
Well, I have heard of that sibset on twins. It is kind of silly.
I don’t like [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] either as they are too closely related.
I’m not really sure what to suggest, but I think you should keep looking.

[name_m]Egan[/name_m]
I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] are matchy in a mythological creature kind of way, but I think that’s kind of fun. (If you plan on more than two kids it could limit your choices if you felt like keeping the theme, or you might end up with a “third one out” kind of situation if your third kid doesn’t have a mythological creature name.)
I love the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] but I’d really advise against using it with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]…they sound way too close with the “fee” sound. Maybe save [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] for a middle name, or use another name with a similar vibe. One of my faves is Belphoebe, a character from [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Spenser[/name_u]'s “Faerie Queene.” It has [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] in it but would work a lot better with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] because they don’t both start with PHOE.

Like previous posters, I say yes to [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], hell no to [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (much as I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].) People have suggested some great alternatives.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], and I applaud you for making and considering naming your children them! BUT, [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a bit too matchy in my opinion. I love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] though!
