My husband and I both agree we think we like the name Sid/Syd for baby brother (big sister is Billie). We like that audibly the names sound sound nice together (Sid and Billie sound like a band or a crime duo and we love that) and we also like that they’re both pretty unisex.
We’re stuck on two things:
Whether we want to go with Sid or Syd. I know Sid is more typical for males, but it’s hard for me to not think of SIDS with this spelling. I could get over that, I think, but it’s just where my head goes right now. For a little boy with moderately unconventional parents, can Syd work for a boy?
A middle name. I realllly wanted to use Joshua as the middle name in honour of my father, but Joshua doesn’t sound very smooth with Sid/Syd. Sidney, however, could work. (Sydney is too obviously feminine in my opinion, so it would need to be Sidney). However we sort of just like plain old Sid/Syd. The other middle we are considering sounds admittedly much better with Sid/Syd, and that’s Richard. It was my husband’s grandpa’s name and I’m told he was a pretty amazing guy, though I never did get to meet him.
Given all of these considerations, which name do you like best?
i voted for Sidney Joshua! i understand wanting to just use sid or syd since that’s what you’d primarily call him, but sidney definitely sounds better with joshua. i also think giving him the option of sidney for when he’s older is a good idea!
I feel like [name_u]Sid[/name_u] is simpler and more likely to be spelled correctly, but [name_u]Syd[/name_u] is great too - actually, I kind of like [name_u]Syd[/name_u] as a full name! [name_u]Syd[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] sounds fine to me
I actually really like [name_u]Sid[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]! I think it flows really nicely. I also happen to think it sounds nicer than [name_u]Sid[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]!
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is also lovely, but you shouldn’t feel like you have to use it. If you don’t mind it, I do think [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] is handsome, and you could still exclusively call him [name_u]Sid[/name_u].
As for [name_u]Sid[/name_u] or [name_u]Syd[/name_u], you should go with the spelling you love! I prefer [name_u]Sid[/name_u], it feels more familiar, but [name_u]Syd[/name_u] isn’t bad either!! If you feel more comfortable with [name_u]Syd[/name_u], it’s perfectly usable!
I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] & [name_u]Sid[/name_u] are incredible together - they both give off very cool, edgy vibes. Such a cool set of siblings! [name_u]Sid[/name_u] reminds me of [name_u]Sid[/name_u] Vicious and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] reminds me of [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_u]Joe[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m], so that’s where those vibes are coming from I think!
lastly, for what its worth, I don’t think [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] or [name_u]Syd[/name_u] seem feminine! The name in general sounds very neutral, slightly masculine leaning to me.
I voted for [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] just because it was my favorite, but I think Sid/Syd [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] sounds perfectly fine to my ear. [name_f]My[/name_f] preference is for the spelling [name_u]Sid[/name_u], but I think [name_u]Syd[/name_u] is fine if it’s going to make you feel better.
I love [name_u]Syd[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]! I definitely prefer the simplicity of [name_u]Syd[/name_u] over [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] (especially with Billie). The spelling [name_u]Syd[/name_u] is so cool and unexpected, but not in a ‘too creative’ way. And I actually think [name_u]Syd[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] flows better than [name_u]Syd[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] because they both end in ‘d’. [name_u]Syd[/name_u] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] are such a cool pair!
I think [name_u]Syd[/name_u] for a boy is great. I prefer it over [name_u]Sid[/name_u] because it feels more modern and playful next to [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. It also strikes me as more of a full name than [name_u]Sid[/name_u]. So I say either [name_u]Syd[/name_u] or [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] “Sid”, but I think [name_u]Syd[/name_u] is cool.
I voted for [name_u]Syd[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. It just sounds cool, like [name_u]Sid[/name_u] Vicious (maybe not the best comparison, maybe just stick with Joshua.)
as someone who lives in [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], the spelling [name_u]Syd[/name_u] is quite a common shortened version of the city that people use, and for that reason I’d personally go with [name_u]Sid[/name_u] over [name_u]Syd[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Sid[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]! Since [name_u]Billie[/name_u] has a nickname-name as her full name, I really love the idea of [name_u]Sid[/name_u] having the same. It’s such a great name, too. [name_u]Sid[/name_u] is phenomenal!
I’m always biased towards the simpler spellings, so I like Sid/Sidney. I wouldn’t think of SIDS because it’s such an established name.
I think it’s fun to have flexibility with a longer name and a short nickname, so I’d pick [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] over just [name_u]Sid[/name_u].
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] is so handsome! Personally I like combo the best, though [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is also beautiful.
I love your name style btw: midcentury crime duo is an EXCELLENT sibling name aesthetic!!
I voted for [name_u]Sid[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]. I agree it hasn’t got the best flow, but it seems obvious that you both prefer Sid/Syd over Sidney/Sydney and you’d ended up calling him Sid/Syd all the time.
About the spelling, I like both [name_u]Sid[/name_u] and [name_u]Syd[/name_u], but I slightly prefer [name_u]Sid[/name_u], because when I see [name_u]Syd[/name_u], it looks like the letters S & D, and not a full name. But it’s just my appreciation. I didn’t think about SIDS when I read [name_u]Sid[/name_u] the first name, but if it’s something that really bothers you, I’d choose [name_u]Syd[/name_u].
I voted for [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]. I would not just name him “Sid” and “Syd” with a y has always struck me as the more feminine spelling of the name.
