Sidon?

Continuing the discussion from Thoughts on “Sidonie” (and nicknames for it?):

I love it! I just googled Sidon Lebanon and it’s by the water and looks beautiful. I’m from America and it’s similar to Sydney but I like Sidonie better. I’m wondering just a thought would you ever just use Sidon? I think it could make a beautiful name?

How is Sidon pronounced?

Like [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] without the [name_u]Po[/name_u].

Ohh, I was pronouncing it “SIDD-on” as in the name [name_u]Sid[/name_u] (like in Sydney) and the word “on.” I like it more with the proper pronunciation that you wrote out! It’s a cool name.

Have you considered [name_f]Sigourney[/name_f]? I feel like it has the same vibes as [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f]. Im not overly keen on Sidon, I prefer [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f] as Sidon feels unfinished to me

I would struggle with pronunciation! I want to pronounce it like [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f], which when pronounced correctly i know is ‘see-doe-nee’ but in my area the long e in ‘see’ (and a lot of other words) is often dropped and and exchanged for the shorter ‘ih’ so it would be pronounced as Sih-dun. Plus I wouldn’t know where to put the accent SIH-dun or sih-DUN.

HOWEVER this is a regional/area related pronunciation problem. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name itself and I think your pronunciation is lovely! [name_m]Just[/name_m] pointing out you might have to teach others how you would want her name said.

I’m so glad that my thread inspired this ! :cherry_blossom::smiling_face_with_three_hearts: [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f] is really precious & I think that it might be the one for us. I have been to Sidon since my grandmother is from there & can confirm it has such a beautiful place energy & vibe. It is gorgeous & filled with thousands of years of history. I think Sidon on its own is beautiful & strong, too ! I can’t speak to how people will pronounce it just because I’m ESL but your pronouncing of it feels very natural. :sparkles:

[name_f]My[/name_f] immediate thought was of [name_u]Prince[/name_u] Sidon from the [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] series, so I already see it as a name and I do love it, but it feels more masculine to me - probably because of my association to the character. I was unsure about pronunciation and went with a similar pronunciation to snowmaiden at first. I can definitely see what you’re going for though and it sounds so, so nice with that pronunciation! Still leans more masculine to me, but I could see it as more gender neutral said that way. [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f] is really precious for a little girl though, and in the end, I prefer it to just Sidon.
