Siggy?

Hey there! I’ve been thinking about [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] a lot. I know it’s used as a boy’s name in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], spelled [name_m]Sigge[/name_m] (as a nickname of [name_m]Sigmund[/name_m], etc.), and also as a unisex nickname in Germany (spelled Sigi). They’re both variants of full names and mean “victory.” However, I’ve been thinking about it as a girl’s name.

It came to my attention in the TV show “Vikings,” where one of the female characters is named [name_m]Siggy[/name_m], and recently I also became aware of [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] Flicker, a relationship expert. So what are everyone’s thoughts on it? Could it be used as a girl’s name, and spelled with a ‘Y’ on the end? And how do you guys think it would work in [name_u]America[/name_u]? I think the pronunciation is definitely pretty straightforward.

I’d also love to hear some suggestions of similar names, and some combos! Any style will do - I’m not picky. If you have a name you think would sound great with [name_m]Siggy[/name_m], I’d love to hear it.

Thanks in advance!

I think [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] could actually work! It’s short and spunky and very straightforward. I think it’s actually pretty fashionable sounding. [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] is also my favorite spelling. As for similar names I think anything short and not too feminine could work.

[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]

Thank you! I love the idea of [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] and [name_u]Wren[/name_u], and [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] and Merit especially. I also love [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], and [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Fern[/name_f]. I really like nature-y names with [name_m]Siggy[/name_m].

In the UK, it’s a slang for a cigarette so in English I find it very off-putting. You would write the slang as ciggy, but it’s the same sound. Is that not used in the US? If not, no worries I suppose!

I also know it as a boy’s nickname (Siggi). The female version where I live is Sigga, which I still don’t find appealing because it just makes me think of cigarettes!

People don’t really use ciggy over here, I don’t think. At least, I don’t ever hear it, haha. But I see what you’re saying. I actually think Sigga is very pretty! Thanks for your input, though - you’ve given me something to consider.

My brother currently has a female foster puppy named [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] (after the Vikings show) and I saw female puppy at another rescue also named [name_m]Siggy[/name_m]. So I would not be surprised to see it show up on a baby girl too.

There’s a really good Icelandic yogurt called Siggi’s (or maybe it’s [name_m]Siggy[/name_m]'s, not sure what the spelling is) but I’m not sure if that would bother you.

I love [name_m]Sigge[/name_m] as a boy’s name, but can’t really picture it on a girl. I’d for sure go for Sigga, or even [name_f]Sidda[/name_f].

Yeah, I grew up with the slang term ciggy for cigarette too, so to me that’s a not-great association. Maybe short for [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f]?

I’m not a fan, but if you use it, go with an authentic spelling. Otherwise it’s too close to words like ‘soggy’ and ‘saggy’.

I do love [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f]!

I think [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] sounds spunky and looks pretty. Personally, I would use [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] as a nickname rather than a full name. As mentioned above, [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] is a gorgeous option, and I am also enchanted by Sigune (sig-oon-ah) and [name_f]Signy[/name_f]. A couple other similar-sounding names that popped into my head were [name_m]Sindri[/name_m], Igraine, and [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f].

I think using [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] as a full name would work well too. I live in the US and I’ve never heard ciggy for cigarettes. Rather, it makes me think of the names [name_m]Iggy[/name_m] and Twig.

Here are a few ideas:
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
(from your signature) [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

Names I think would go well with [name_m]Siggy[/name_m]:
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_u]Harley[/name_u]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_u]Regan[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]

Wow, this thread got a lot of replies while I was gone! I love the suggestions of using [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] as a nn for [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] and Sigune. They’re both lovely names. I’ve also always been fond of [name_f]Signy[/name_f]! I had completely forgotten. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the options of Sigga or [name_f]Sidda[/name_f], too.

@lu – Of the combos you listed, I love: [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_u]June[/name_u], and [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] especially. And of those you recommended that go with [name_m]Siggy[/name_m], I love: [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].

Thanks so much to everyone! You’ve all given me a lot of stuff to consider.

This is my aunt’s name. It is short for [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f]. She spells it Sigy, though. I suppose it could also be a nickname for Signe, though, which I love! We are Swedish, so that’s where her name comes from.

I’m actually totally into [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] or [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f]!! Not one I could see myself using, but it’s got a lot of great qualities. Memorable and spirited but not crazy-different. (And I did like [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] of Vikings, even though she had a few less-than-wonderful moments.) I think [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] might work best with a softer middle to balance it. [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] [name_u]Clare[/name_u].

To be honest, I dislike [name_m]Siggy[/name_m]. I dislike the way it is pronounced and spelt and it reminds me of Piggy. Could you not name her [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] and call her [name_m]Siggy[/name_m] as a nickname if you really want to use [name_m]Siggy[/name_m]?

Well, I’m not pregnant nor trying to get pregnant, so it’s just a thought - but of course I could use [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f], if I cared to. However, I personally do like the sound/look of [name_m]Siggy[/name_m], and that’s just me. I do like it as a nn for [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f], though, as I mentioned in an earlier post.

Sigi- I have loved for a number of reasons besides just likeing the name. Australian actress [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] [name_m]Thornton[/name_m] is Sigi to her friends;and a radio series done by a community radio - the story was of Sigi -a young woman and her story about the [name_m]Berlin[/name_m] [name_m]Wall[/name_m] coming down.
