I love the name [name]Silas[/name], but I only know it from the TV show Weeds. I don’t know if I would want my child learning I got his name from a show like that, haha. I’ve seen people using this name on here and I’m just wondering if you got the name from the show too…
I’m not sure what I would say if my child ever asked how I came up with his name. “Well, it’s from a TV show your father and I watched that was about drugs and lots of sex…” What do you think?
I love the name [name]Silas[/name]. A friend of mine named her son that and he is SUCH a [name]Silas[/name]!! I don’t think she got it from the show. I think she simply went through websites such as this and books and she and her hubby fell in love with it.
I once saw a blogpost about this sort of situation. “This might be a bad name if… it has an R-rated story behind it.”
My advice is the same I try to give myself, regarding names I like because of a fictional character. Start trying to think of the name outside of that context.
[name]Silas[/name] is a wonderful name… you probably already know this but thought I’d shed this other light on the name: it is a Biblical name–[name]Silas[/name] was a missionary with [name]Paul[/name] in the early [name]Christian[/name] church. Depending on your beliefs, this could be an excellent second meaning to the name [name]Silas[/name], outside of the TV show (which I have never heard of, by the way!).
My son is a [name]Silas[/name]! We didn’t pick the name because of Weeds – I knew about when we named him, but that was only because I’d googled it.
I don’t think all that many people will have that association with the name – the most common reaction I’ve gotten is “like [name]Silas[/name] Marner?” which is a novel by [name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name].
I would just tell them you thought a name from the Bible was strong and thats what you wanted him to be. STrong and righteous.
I’m just mad because it’s on my list for boy names, but I know when the time comes my SO won’t want to use it because of the show. Thanks for the advice though. You made me realize it doesn’t just have to be a negative thing now
