Sin?

So I want honest opinions on the name Sin. I know it’s perhaps a little out there, but ever since [name]Rachel[/name] and [name]Destin[/name] (from Millionaire Matchmaker :P) used it on their son - Sin Halo - I can’t help but like it. I’m a long way off from babies still, but I keep thinking about it. I would definitely use it in the middle name spot though, rather than the first.

Is it useable or do you think I would just be asking for trouble? Honest opinions please!

I think this is a terrible idea, middle name or otherwise. Your child will suffer needlessly for your poor naming choice. Sorry.

Seriously??? I don’t see why anyone would do that to their child other than to gain some attention for themselves. Sorry if that seems harsh but I think it is a really cruel choice to stick a child with.

I’ve never seen the show, but unless they were meaning it to be Latin (“without”), I would speculate they were just trying to keep their names in the tabloid headlines as long as possible. It feels like an attention grab to me rather than a well-reasoned choice.

The closest real names to Sin (since I suspect you like the sound, not the meaning):

Cem (Turkish for ‘ruler’)
[name]Sem[/name] (Dutch/Scandinavian form of [name]Shem[/name])
[name]Cian[/name] (‘keen,’ “ancient ruler” in Irish)
Sani (“brilliant, splendid” in Arabic)
Shin (“real, true” in Japanese)
Shun (“talented” in Japanese)
[name]Sine[/name] (‘sheen’eh’, [name]Jeanne[/name] in Irish)
Sini (a poetic term for the color blue in Finnish)
Soini (Finnish variant of [name]Sven[/name])
[name]Sven[/name] (multiple Scandinavian languages, “boy”)
[name]Sen[/name] (“thousand” in Japanese)

Okay well maybe I’m a little crazy. But I honestly think it is cute. I’m not really religious or spiritual in any way, so for me it doesn’t have that connection. Instead I’m kind of lumping it in with the other ‘badass’ baby names out there, like [name]Diesel[/name], [name]Wilder[/name], [name]Striker[/name], [name]Rogue[/name], [name]Axel[/name], etc. Am I really that out-there in thinking that?

I don’t think its a good idea. [name]How[/name] about [name]Sidney[/name] or [name]Sinclair[/name] nn Sin?

Besides being connected to the word deadly, this name is a Cambodian last name as well. So I find it weird in that way, but I also have a friend who goes by Sinder and he’s Cambodian so maybe that could be an alternative to get Sin without people questioning it. But if you like it use it!

Wow, at first I thought it was a fake post. This should be a guilty pleasure name. If you live in an English speaking country it would be one of the worst names to give to a child, up there with names like Adolf and Satan. I hope this isn’t harsh, I just think this should be a guilty pleasure name.

Also, I don’t know if I would classify sin with Axel. Axel does have the Ax sound, but sin is just different. Maybe because it is a word and not a name.

I do like the suggestion of Sinclair.

Edit: Even if a person liked the name, I don’t think it would be fair to the child to use it, no matter how much the person likes it. It is just asking for trouble, like the op asked.

Regardless of your religious beliefs or complete lack thereof, Sin is like naming your child Crime, Wrongdoing, Error, or even Evil. That’s simply what the [common, everyday] word means. It’s definitely across the line from ‘outlaw’ names like [name]Rogue[/name].

Sorry, but I’m with the others on this one. I actually remember when they named their son that. I didn’t like it then, and my feelings haven’t changed. Sorry.

Another take on it: You aren’t religious, but millions of people are. This as a name could be considered offensive to some people that are religious. (Kind of like people who don’t have a Jewish background naming their child [name]Cohen[/name]. Very offensive to those that are Jewish.)

You may not have a negative view of the name Sin, but I’d guarantee that 99% of people do and anyone named Sin is going to be judged negatively at first glance for the rest of their life. [name]Don[/name]'t put that on a child, it’s not fair to them.

@Mara_lyn86 - I do agree that it is more of a guilty pleasure name! And I will admit that there would probably never be a chance of me using it in real life. I just was mostly interested in a few berries opinions. But I disagree that it’s the same as naming a child Satan! That’s a little more extreme in my opinion.

@pippi777 - I understand the [name]Cohen[/name] reference. Although it is still a decently popular name despite its offensiveness.

Satan may be an extreme example, I admit. Sorry for that, I just tried to come up with some examples. Some may not view it as badly, but some may who are more religious. I hope my message wasn’t too rude. I don’t like offending anyone.

Anyways, thanks for the responses everyone! And thanks for your (brutal) honesty! :stuck_out_tongue:
I would just like to clarify once more, for everyone’s peace of mind I suppose, that I am NOT expecting, and NOT going to stick this name on a real child! I mainly posted just looking for reactions/opinions. I AM going to close the thread however, so thanks once again guys.
