Sister for Briggs

Help, Berries!

Found out today we’re having a girl(!) and looking for your ideas and recommendations.

Our son is [name]Briggs[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name].

We like names that are fairly familiar so people have at least heard of it, but want to try to avoid really popular names. If it’s on the Top 100-200, it’s probably too popular. Also, prefer names where there’s little debate on pronunciation based on how it’s spelled/how it looks.

Because our last name starts with A, don’t want her first name to end with an ‘ah’ sound. Tend to be more drawn to old-fashioned names coming back into style, but modern works too. Want it to be fresh, friendly, kind of sophisticated, and have a creative feel.

Any names immediately come to mind after reading this? Would love to hear them!
Thanks!

From your list, my favourite is [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Valentine[/name].

[name]Adelyn[/name] [name]Rose[/name] - To me, “-lyn” names never feel “sophisticated.” I’m also hesitant to call this one “fresh” because it’s so close to [name]Addison[/name], [name]Adeline[/name], etc. Personally, I’d opt for the more classic and streamlined [name]Adele[/name] (one of my favourites). Tweaking this name to [name]Adele[/name] [name]Rosalind[/name] makes me love it! Also, on a different note, have you considered the idea of using [name]Rose[/name] as a first name?

[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] - This is my clear second favourite. I love both names. But, as you note, [name]Lucy[/name] is becoming more popular these days. Have you thought about switching the order and putting the less common [name]Eloise[/name] up front? I think [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] works equally well as a combo. There may be too many repeating sounds for your taste in [name]Eloise[/name] Allberg, though.

[name]Sofie[/name] - If you’re worried about popularity, I’d take this one right off the list.

Avaline - While pretty, I think pronunciation would make me think twice about actually using this one. Have you considered [name]Averill[/name]? It’s one of my personal favourites. [name]Averill[/name] shares many of the same sounds but comes with a much more straightforward pronunciation.

[name]Lainey[/name] - Too nicknamey for my taste.

[name]Sloane[/name] - I’m neutral on this one. It doesn’t do much for me, but there’s nothing in particular that I really dislike about it either.

[name]Jayne[/name] - A beautiful, simple name with enduring appeal. I do strongly prefer the [name]Jane[/name] spelling, though.

[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Ellery[/name]

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions [name]Cressida[/name]!

If popularity weren’t an issue, we’d name her [name]Adelyn[/name] [name]Rose[/name] in a heartbeat. But all the [name]Addie[/name] nn’s of the different variation of Ad___ names are making us hesitate. If we went with that, her nn would be [name]Adelie[/name] or De-De. Something along those lines. Plus, sometimes I hear [name]Aladdin[/name] in [name]Adelyn[/name]. :S

[name]Sylvie[/name] is really growing on us. I’d say for now it’s the top contender. [name]Do[/name] you think a little fair skinned, strawberry blonde-haired girl could pull that off? (When I picture a [name]Sylvie[/name], I first think of olive skin tone, dark hair, dark eyes for some reason, and I wonder if our daughter will ‘look’ like a [name]Sylvie[/name]…)

And [name]Lucy[/name]. God, I love that name. [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Lou[/name]. I can just picture it. Damn popularity! That, and my brother said, “You’re going to name your daughter after [name]Charlie[/name] [name]Brown[/name]?! [name]Lucy[/name] was so mean!” I think [name]Eloise[/name] Alberg is a little too much llllllll, so would want to keep that as a MN, and stick with [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Eloise[/name], not [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Lucy[/name].

[name]Averill[/name] sounds really pretty. For some reason though the first thought was Gargamel from the Smurfs, and next ‘average’. Why does my mind work that way?! Please tell me it’s pregnancy brain.

Good thing babies give us some time to think about their names!
