Sister for Iris. SO STUMPED

I’ve posted a few times regarding a little sister for [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. Gender of this baby is unknown, and he/she will arrive any day. Boy name is chosen - [name_m]George[/name_m]. Girl name is totally undecided. Recently, my husband and I keep going back to “cutesy” names:

[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Annie[/name_f]
[name_f]Betty[/name_f] (this one came up yesterday - and seems out of left field with the others!)

[name_f]My[/name_f] problem is, I don’t know if a “cutesy” name is right with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. Really, I worry we can’t match [name_f]Iris[/name_f] (although I’m sure everyone feels this way when naming a second child). I love her name and nothing is holding a candle to it for me right now. After getting on a “ie/y”-ending name kick, I wonder if a more “old lady vintage” sounding name is better - [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]…something along those lines. I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but our last name starts with an F and the ph/f is a bit of a mouthful.

Help! Any suggestions out there? Are there wonderful choices with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] that I’m missing out on? [name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (totally different than the “cutesy” options) - but I don’t love it with [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I realize names are a personal choice, but I have to torture myself and see if there are any options we haven’t explored! Thank you!

Hmm, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] seems a very dignified (and beautiful) name to me. [name_f]Tilly[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Betty[/name_f] don’t seem as serious somehow… they are nice but I would agree with the adjective ‘cutesy’. You shouldn’t worry overly much about whether the sisters’ names ‘go together’, but having said that I think I would go for something a little more serious, at least so she has that option. I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f]/[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is absolutely the style I would aim for, but [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] are a bit ‘essy’ together, and depending on what your ln actually is, you are probably right about [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] at all? [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]? Or there are some “-y / -ie” names that do not seem at all cutesy (to me):

[name_f]Briony[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

A few others:

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

From your list, I like [name_f]Edie[/name_f] the best with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] followed by [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u]. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is a lovely name but it’s too similar in sound. I would avoid names with “f” as well as “v” sounds with your surname. Here are some suggestions.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f]

I was going to suggest [name_f]Edith[/name_f] too- you could call her [name_f]Edie[/name_f] or not.

[name_u]June[/name_u] is also adorable.

Have you considered other traditional word names? Or other mythology names? I like these…
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Hestia[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_u]Vesper[/name_u]

I was going to suggest [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. Nice vintage to match [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I love all of the other vintage names you were suggesting: [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u].

I think you are on the right track. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_m]George[/name_m] are a lovely, vintage sibset, and I think that a vintage name is the best bet. But, there are so many good ones to choose from!

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is gorgeous! I’d pair it w/[name_u]Alix[/name_u], [name_f]Lourdes[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] or [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Edie[/name_f] go very well together! There is a simple grace to the way they complement each other.

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is spunky. I think [name_f]Betty[/name_f] could work.
Since [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is considered to be “geek chic” and “hipster” on Nameberry, here are my suggestions:
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend has two girls named [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]. I think they are a very cute sibset!

As others suggested, I think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] with nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f] would be so cute. However, the first thing that popped into my mind when reading the title was [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Clara[/name_f], it’s sweet but also vintage, fits right in next to [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I absolutely love [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. It’s such a gorgeous underused name (where I live, at least). Problem is, it rhymes with our last name (not in a cute, this-could-work sort of way).

It’s fun to hear you say that [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is spunky, because I agree (not to mention my daughter’s personality is spunky!). Maybe that’s why I feel [name_f]Betty[/name_f] could work too. I love these suggestions. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] has been on and off our list. I love the name [name_f]Freya[/name_f] but our last name starts with an F and has many of the same sounds, so it’s difficult to say. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is wonderful too!

Lots of love for [name_f]Edie[/name_f]! Might need to revisit that one.

Re: [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] - I don’t love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. And not terribly fond of nicknames in general. But I do love [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] as a given name. I just don’t know if I’m brave enough to actually put it on a birth certificate!

I was about to suggest [name_u]June[/name_u] when I saw you had it on your list already. I think it’s wonderful with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. So is [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]! I also like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].

What about [name_u]Eden[/name_u]? Then you can use [name_f]Edie[/name_f] as a NN but have a more sophisticated name to use.

Wow, you’ve already gotten a lot of great suggestions. Personally, I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_f]Betty[/name_f] are great with [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]/[name_f]Clio[/name_f]([name_f]Clio[/name_f] has a Greek mythology connection like [name_f]Iris[/name_f])
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
Etta
[name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlo[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_u]Romy[/name_u]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]

I love Iris & Ada together!

Other ideas…
Daphne

Millicent
Betsy

Esme
Enid
Estelle
Louise or Louisa
Oona
Nola

Sorry for any repeats, and best of luck! Oh, and if you do have a boy, George is delightful, and a perfect match with Iris. Congratulations!

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Anabel[/name_f] (my friend has an [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and is about to name #2 [name_f]Anabel[/name_f]!)

good luck!

I just came across the name [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f] which sounds nice with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and you have the possibility of nn [name_f]Betty[/name_f].
