Sister for Lilah

We are expecting our second daughter in June and can’t agree on a name. Our first daughter is Lilah Jayne and we had no trouble choosing her name because we knew exactly who she would be named after and we agreed on both names early on. This time is different.

We are thinking of naming our second daughter after my grandfather Art (Arthur) and great-grandmother Molly, although it’s OK if we don’t end up naming her after both of them. We are Jewish and love that Lilah has Hebrew origins, so ideally we would like our second daughter’s name to have some connection to Hebrew/Judaism (although it’s not essential). Our last name rhymes with King and is one syllable, so I don’t want a one syllable first name.

We have discussed some of the names below, but we can’t seem to come to a consensus like with did with Lilah.

Audrey - This is my top contender right now, but my husband thinks it’s a little boring. He prefers Aubrey, which I think is too trendy and doesn’t go well with Lilah. I was pretty set on Audrey Mae in my head before I started seriously discussing names with my husband.

Arielle - We both like this name and the fact that it has Hebrew roots, but my husband and I pronounce it differently. He pronounces it like The Little Mermaid (like aerial) and I pronounce it like R-E-L. It’s subtle, but if we named our daughter Arielle, I think it would be confusing as to which pronunciation is correct.

Margot - We both like this name (although my husband prefers the spelling Margaux), but one of our friends recently named their daughter Margot. They live in another state and we rarely see them, but to me it makes it off limits, at least as a first name. My husband thinks it isn’t a big deal at all.

Scarlett - We both like this name, but when we discussed it further we both couldn’t really see naming our daughter Scarlett. However, it could be a creative way to honor Art because they have similar sounds.

Evelyn - My husband loves this name but I have vetoed it. I really don’t want a name in the top 10, and I know too many 80-year-olds named Evelyn.

Harper - My husband suggested this name early on in the pregnancy and we have jokingly been calling the baby Harper Lee. However, I’m not a big fan of surnames for girls and I really don’t want a top 10 name. I also don’t think it goes well with Lilah. I’m scared daughter #2 will end up being named Harper solely because we can’t agree on a name!

Shira - My husband keeps suggesting this name. I think it’s OK, but it doesn’t honor anyone and I think it’s overly Jewish-sounding; I’ve never met a Shira who wasn’t Jewish. I really like that Lilah has Jewish roots but it’s not obviously a Jewish name.

Arabella - We both kind of like this name, but I can’t help seeing the word Arab in it. I also think it might be a little frilly compared to Lilah.

Maybe we’re missing another great name out there!? Open to suggestions for both first and middle names. Thanks for your help!

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are particularly lovely with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], I think!

I have a cousin named [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] whose sister is [name_f]Elisa[/name_f] (eh-LEE-suh), which is like to suggest as I think it’s just great with [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] / [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]!

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] is so sweet!
I think [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] (not Aubrey), [name_f]Arielle[/name_f], and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] work best with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Ariela[/name_f] might work even a little better, but I know the pronunciation issues would remain. I don’t know HOW much that matters… I know some bilingual families where the parents pronounce the kids’ names the way it is in their native languages, and it isn’t a problem. But that’s not the case here.
What if you spelled [name_f]Margot[/name_f] as [name_f]Margo[/name_f]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] to maybe each not have their preferred spelling, AND to avoid similarity with the friend’s child? It looks less [name_u]French[/name_u] that way, which I think is better with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f].
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] seems like a good middle name idea, since it works to honor [name_m]Art[/name_m] but doesn’t feel like her first name.

Out of your list I think [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] work the best with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f].

Congratulations :two_hearts:

Firstly [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] is a lovely name!

Looking at your list I think [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] is gorgeous she’s timeless, elegant and has the same vintage vibes of [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. I also think using an ‘a’ name would honour your Grandfather [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] using the Jewish custom of sharing initials. Looking at other ‘a’ name ideas from your list I think [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] is too trendy with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] I’m not keen. I think you’ll find the pronunciation issues with [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] jarring and the ‘Arab’ thing with [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] awkward so would take them off the list. The other [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] honour choice of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is gorgeous especially with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] such a stunning name.

[name_f]Margot[/name_f] would be an amazing honour for [name_f]Molly[/name_f] partaking in Jewish custom of sharing initials of the person you want to honour and feels like a natural sister to [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is the best spelling looks like the most natural choice with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. Stylistically [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] looks off with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f].

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] ~ I think this name is pretty and works well with [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. But if you think the name is too old lady would you consider [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] feels more modern. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe just [name_f]Eve[/name_f]?

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] ~ she’s fun I love the [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] reference but take her off the list immediately especially if your scared of your baby having that name I would just stop referring to this little one as [name_u]Harper[/name_u].

[name_f]Shira[/name_f] ~ she does feel very Jewish similarly I don’t know anyone outside our community named [name_f]Shira[/name_f] so I think if you don’t want an overly Jewish name I wouldn’t go with this one.

I think honouring your relatives is a good place to start I would specifically look at ‘a’ names or ‘m’ names for inspiration!

If your not sure about following this custom here are some other ideas

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] and…

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]

[name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] is beautiful and a perfect match to sister [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]!

I would avoid [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] with pronunciation issues.

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] feels too different to me next to [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. I also feel this way about [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f].

[name_f]Margot[/name_f] is okay but for some reason feels off.

I like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] but appreciate your hesitation with popularity. I also think [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is very nice!

Good luck!

Congratulations on your second little girl !!

I really like the suggestion of Marta/ [name_f]Martha[/name_f] as a way to honour [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_m]Art[/name_m] !

I also really like
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_u]Maria[/name_u]
[name_u]Arley[/name_u]
[name_f]Marleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Marly[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] is so pretty!!

From the names you have considered I really like [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Shira[/name_f]

I chose [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] for my daughter as well. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the Hebrew connotations being a Jewish woman.

[name_f]Aribelle[/name_f] seems nice, like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] combined

I want to suggest [name_u]Marie[/name_u]! It’s a name that’s familiar like [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] but not super popular (as a first name) and both [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] & [name_u]Marie[/name_u] have this sweet bright feeling to them. Plus [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a diminutive of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and [name_u]Marie[/name_u] is a variation of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] so you get a little bit of the honor name in there too
