What do you think about it generally and as a middle?
I would personally only ever use it as a middle since I’m fairly conservative.
I was on here a while ago looking for names to honor my grandmother,
whose middle name was a cognate of [name]Esther[/name] (also meaning star).
Very pretty. I would think of it as a great mn since I am a (sort of) conservative namer myself. It makes me think of music.

Yeah, the sitar connection is nice (I actually happen to really love sitar music - thought of the sitar but not of how much I like it, ha!).
Thoughts on relative merits with [name]Lily[/name], [name]Eve[/name], and [name]Phoebe[/name]?
I think I like it better with [name]Phoebe[/name] than her current pair [name]Stella[/name]. [name]Phoebe[/name] Sitara. Hmm.
I like it a lot, but I find it very weird if you’re not Hindi personally since it’s so obviously a Hindi name to me.

FYI, “[name]Tara[/name]” also means star in Hindi (its related to [name]Si[/name]-tara). I like it, but I speak Hindi, so its a fairly familiar name to me.
I think it’s cool and pretty. Reminds me of the instrument the Sitar but that’s cool.

My first thought was the Sitar instrument…“star” is a very pretty meaning, but it’s a name I wouldn’t use without a link to Hinduism I could claim.
Thanks taz and jyoti for the [name]Tara[/name] input - You know I had heard that about [name]Tara[/name] before but then haven’t seen it on name sites much with that meaning. It does add a lot of sparkle to the name, which I could see using as a middle with some names I love, in my top 10, but aren’t in my top 5…[name]Naomi[/name] [name]Tara[/name] and [name]Miriam[/name] [name]Tara[/name] work pretty well I think.
susan.n. and east93, I can see the weirdness with no Hindi heritage (which is true for me), but I also don’t think it’s off limits especially in the middle and with the family connection.
I am guessing that the Latin name [name]Sidra[/name] must be connected? I like that one too and it’s less clearly ethnicity-specific, but since I like a lot of 2 syllable first names and names that end in a, Sitara works with a few more. Again [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sidra[/name] or [name]Miriam[/name] [name]Sidra[/name] could be nice though.
I saw the spellings Satarah and Satara on some website but now those just look made up the more I look at them…

I really adore the name Sitara, when I first heard, it I really thought it was cute, complete form, yet, slightly different than [name]Tara[/name]. I also like Hindi names, which I have no connection too. But, I like a lot of names that I do not have any cultural ties too, i.e. Irish, Greek, Scottish, etc. Yes, some may be a bit more ‘ethnic’ based and others more ‘adjustable’ and ‘passable’ to use, i.e. [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Callum[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] etc. Anywho, a name such as Sitara, is really gorgeous and would love to see it as on a little girl. Based on a couple of opinions from Berries and other webpions, I had put a couple of Hindi/Sanskrit names I liked for the middle on the shelf, but I am thinking about taking them down and really go with what I like.
I have heard that name before, but for the life of me, I cannot remember. I don’t know if it was from a Bollywood movie or what, but it’s going to bother me for a while. OMGoodness, where did I here it from?

@natural - did you figure it out? I know that’s so frustrating! I agree when getting too sensitive about names “not part of your culture,” things start bumping against double standards and race issues. I mean it also can be good to be sensitive about this stuff! It’s complicated. But at the end of the day I do like this name and probably would keep it to the middle, and I think it’s not weird. I have a few Hindi-speaking friends and I’m having a hard time imagining them doing more than raising an eyebrow and then just reacting based on whether they like the name or not.
