[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] with an ‘r’ is derived from ‘scholar’, which, despite its so-called ‘stripper’ connotations, suggests a brainy girl, which I’m sure yours will be. It’s also really pretty and can be shortened to [name_u]Sky[/name_u] if she wants to. I know a boy named [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] - I thought that was awful. It’s certainly not a unisex name!

I don’t find [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] stripper-y - it’s one of the rare unisex names that I actually like on either gender, and I like the airy “sky” grounded by the second syllable. It doesn’t feel dated like [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] to me - I’ve met tons of Tylers and I think only one [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] (a boy, though it may have been spelled [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u], I don’t remember). I do worry that [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] might sound too similar to [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] for siblings, but that may vary depending on your accent - try yelling them both across a playground and see if they sound distinct enough for you.

[name_f]Skyla[/name_f] does remind me of [name_f]Starla[/name_f] and (sorry) does feel stripper-y to me, and yes, I think she’d spend a lot of time correcting people. So generally, I would vastly prefer [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] to [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] as long as it sounds different enough from your other children’s names.

Not sure if you’re looking for any suggestions, but it crossed my mind that you might also like [name_f]Stella[/name_f].

[name_f]Skyla[/name_f] is the name of a type of birth control IUD.

[name_f]Skyla[/name_f] feels a little tacky (or stripper-y, as you call it) to me, too. I prefer the [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] spelling, but [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] works as well.

Thanks all for the replies. Yea, discovered the [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] IUD thing and it does feel stripper-ish to me. Plus, we have a lot of family is [name_m]Long[/name_m] Island and a lot of people have mentioned on other sites that it sounds like a [name_m]Long[/name_m] Island accent trying to say [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] so I think that would annoy me over time.

Yes, I’ve worried about the [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] sounds too much like [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and even [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]. My 2 year old tends to not pronounce the r or the t in scarlett and I think [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] might sound the same as well, but honestly I feel that it’s tough to name your third girl with an S name after you already exhausted two of your favorite girl S names. We tend to shorten names in our families out of habit (Sayds, Scarly, and even Sawey (horrible I know!), so I’m sure she will be called [name_u]Sky[/name_u] or [name_u]Sky[/name_u]-[name_u]Sky[/name_u] quite a bit.

I am annoyed to feel so restrict by the S trend because I name her [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], or [name_u]Piper[/name_u] in a heartbeat, but basically we had fertility/genetic issues and thought we were lucky to get 2 children and never thought in our wildest dreams we’d be naming for 4 little people. Anyhow, my husband wouldn’t agree to [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] or [name_u]Piper[/name_u] for our second child so no reason to think he’d agree now. Then our third child felt like it would be our last but even then I did try to steer away from the S but it’s the only name we could agree on from our favorites. I’ve thought of an SH sound but I don’t really love any of those names either.

I think [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] and [name_u]Skylar[/name_u]/[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] are both too close to [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], but I agree with your sentiments about not breaking the S trend now - I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to do it either. What about:

[name_f]Shyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Shayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Shaina[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]
[name_f]Serra[/name_f]
[name_f]Sela[/name_f]
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Samara[/name_f]
[name_u]Sydney[/name_u]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Selena[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Stella[/name_f] works best (sweet, kind of Southern, kind of trendy but not overused, two syllables, starts with S), then [name_f]Sela[/name_f], with [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] tying for third.

[name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], and [name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], and [name_f]Sela[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], and [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]

Hmm, maybe you could just go with [name_u]Sky[/name_u]/[name_u]Skye[/name_u] by itself? Although maybe it’s a little hippy compared to your other children’s names  [name_f]Skylia[/name_f] is another variation, I don’t know if it’s “stripper” or not though.

Some other suggestions with a similar vibe as [name_f]Skyla[/name_f]:

[name_f]Senna[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Shayla[/name_f] ([name_u]Shay[/name_u] is so cute if you’re going to shorten it!)
