So I love European names, particularly those of [name]German[/name], Russian, Romanian or Bulgarian origin on little girls. But I have an affinity for trendy boys names.
Some examples:
[name]Ronan[/name] nn [name]Ro[/name] (Top choice, I am pretty unmoving on this one, maybe when the time comes I’ll use it as a middle name.)
[name]Carter[/name]
[name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Hart[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Jonas[/name] (I know its too sing-song-y with [name]Ronan[/name])
So this proves to be a problem because I love long, romantic, frilly girls names:
[name]Angelina[/name] (I know its not strictly European; but its quite popular where my family is from.)
[name]Danika[/name]
[name]Ekaterina[/name]
[name]Elizaveta[/name]
Mirela
Nikolina (This would work to honour a loved one who passed away. It’s growing on me.)
[name]Rayna[/name] (Could work to honour a family member. I really like it. But the alliteration would be annoying.)
[name]Tatiana[/name]
This isn’t all of them, but just some that come to mind.
So any suggestions on how to make Slavic/European girls names work with trendy boy’s names would be greatly appreciate! Thanks Berries!
It may be all in the nickname for you… but what’s important to remember in the long run is at they’ll only be viewed as a “set” for a brief period at the very beginning of their lives. My name doesn’t particularly “go” with my brothers’ names, but it has never really occurred to me that I stick out against them. The only truly important thing is to make the names fair, so none are more or less special sounding than others.
That said, [name]Carter[/name] and [name]Elizaveta[/name] or Nikolina is a tough sell. They would inevitably be [name]Lizzie[/name] and [name]Nikki[/name]. Some are an easier pair than others; I can totally see Mirela with any of your boys, especially [name]Heath[/name]. [name]Rayna[/name] as well. It’s just when they do get long and frilly that they seem less like a pair, but again, that’s where nicknames come in.
You could go with a Slavic name that’s getting trendy in the states…[name]Elena[/name] and [name]Milena[/name] come to mind, or one of the many names that can be shortened to [name]Eva[/name], [name]Mila[/name], [name]Lena[/name], etc…trendy-ish nicknames w/ a more elaborate full name.
Thanks all. Well, [name]Nina[/name] Dobrev’s name is actually Nikolina and [name]Emmy[/name] Rossum’s real name is [name]Emmanuelle[/name]. So do you think that if I could find a short form I liked I could keep the long form in the FN spot?
Well of course you can do whatever you like! In the end, that will be the kid’s name and she’ll likely NEVER second-guess it… which is all that matters
I don’t really see this as a problem, the boys names and girls names on your list are cute together.
I love [name]Ronan[/name]. And I particularly love Nikolina and [name]Ekaterina[/name] from your girls list. Again w. the nicknames- [name]Ro[/name], [name]Kit[/name], and [name]Niko[/name] sound like a super cute bunch of adorable scalawags/junior detectives/what have you.
Oh, something for me! What do you think of
[name]Cristina[/name] (very popular in central-east Europe),
[name]Ivana[/name]/[name]Ivanka[/name],
[name]Eliska[/name],
[name]Zuzana[/name],
[name]Hana[/name],
[name]Natalia[/name],
[name]Olga[/name],
[name]Dora[/name],
[name]Paulina[/name],
[name]Daria[/name]?
All of them are used really often.
My family comes from this part of Europe, so I can always ask my mum for more names, if you want me to.
