help!
i’m 23 weeks pregnant with my second child, a girl, yay! my first child is 15-month old (boy) [name]Asher[/name] what a cutie he is.
after a lot of agonising over many lists of names i couldn’t quite put my finger on what i liked about certain names and not about others, but now i think i’ve figured it out - i like names with soft consonant sounds in them, and i tend to dislike names with hard consonant sounds in them. i’m a linguist so maybe i’m just fussy, i don’t know! (although, it’s not that i dislike the names for others, i just don’t feel they suit ME… make sense?) i also like names that are a little less common (with some exceptions, see below!)
so, here is my list so far - please add your suggestions!! (bear in mind our surname sounds like narelle and i want to steer clear of rhyming, or names too heavy on the ‘r’ sound like ‘aurora’ - though i do love that name!)
elouera (rhymes with laura) - hubby really likes this, i’m not sold, i think she’ll just get misunderstood ‘laura’. i like the concept - it’s an aboriginal word meaning ‘pleasant place’ but seems problematic (i.e. spelling and pronunciation)
hazel - i love this name, it’s vintage-y but not clunky and it has the soft sounds i love. but not a lot of options for shortening or nicknames (it will get shortened… we live in australia! just as long as it’s not ‘hazy’)
ali (pronounced ah-lee, not ‘ally’) or alia
ari (ah-ree), aria, ariel (not eh-ree-el)
iley - i can’t find a meaning for this name. i studied with a girl called iley and i loved the name. but i’m big on meanings.
abbey - goes a little bit against my ‘no hard sounds’ rule, but it’s kind of sweet.
emily - more common and traditional but soft, gentle, but not too ‘princessy’, it’s also my sisters name and my neice’s (from my other sister) middle name.
at the moment i’m thinking maybe elouera for a middle name (i.e. abbey elouera) but it doesn’t go with all my selections (i.e. hazel elouera)
so, that’s my list so far… can anyone add anything?
[name]Asher[/name] is wonderful. I like [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] but none of the others really do it for me. Here are some names to consider…
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Dalia[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Maya[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Jemima[/name]
hmm, not a big fan of the hard ‘c’ at the start of a name (for me, anyway!) with the exception of maybe cora.
phoebe is nice, and maya is nice too except we have a big department store in australia called ‘myer’ and with our accent it’s pronounced the same, plus i have a close friend with a one-year-old ‘mia’, and our surname starts with ‘m’! gah. too many variables. is there a machine that will just give you the most perfect name for your child?!
i’ve come across a couple more that i like: zoe, sky and olive. (though zoe and sky are both names of my cousins!) i just with there were more simple, subtle, soft names out there! i guess that’s my name style…
Ooh, [name]Olive[/name] would be a great choice. It sounds so nice with [name]Asher[/name].
Have you tried using Nymbler? You enter six names that you like and Nymbler will generate tons of names you might like based on the names you entered. It’s a pretty cool little tool.
I love the name [name]Asher[/name]! My favorites are definitely [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Olive[/name]. But I’m leaning toward [name]Hazel[/name], I don’t think you need a nn with [name]Hazel[/name], it’s so sweet, simple and beautiful on its own (I don’t really understand the whole nn fascination). However, if you must… Maybe Zellie, [name]Zella[/name], [name]Elle[/name]? [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Asher[/name] are wonderful together.
I love [name]Hazel[/name] and I think the nn [name]Elle[/name] is cute for it. Otherwise [name]Hal[/name], [name]Halle[/name], [name]Zella[/name]… but I don’t think [name]Hazel[/name] is a name that feels like it needs to be shortened. It’s only 2 syllables and rolls of the tongue nicely…
I also wanted to suggest my daughters name, [name]Eulalie[/name]. We call her Lalie for short. It has that soft feeling you like and it’s meaning is “well spoken/ sweet voice” which is a lovely meaning and is a nice tie to your profession as a linguist.
