Solveig? Will it have pronunciation issues?

Recently I met a little girl named [name_f]Solveig[/name_f] ([name_m]Sol[/name_m]-vay) and just thought it was adorable!

I was curious what other people thought of the name, does it seem to “foreign” sounding? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that pronunciation will be an issue? What’s your overall opinion?

If I heard the name [name_f]Solveig[/name_f] I would think it was either foreign or perhaps new-age, hipster, what-have-you. If I read it, I’d think it was a very Scandinavian name and probably butcher it [name_m]Sol[/name_m]-vayg or Solv-igg. So yes, there will be pronunciation issues as well as misspellings – not sure where you are though.

I think that it’s a name, properly pronounced, that would grow on me. I don’t have any associations with it, as I’m sure meeting an adorable little girl with the name would greatly help my perception! It does seem quite nordic in spelling (though I wouldn’t have placed it by sound) which would cause pronunciation issues as well as raise curiosity about your heritage. Not bad things, just considerations. [name_f]Every[/name_f] one is different in that regard.

I think it’s beautiful! But do think there would be some pronunciation and spelling problems.

Being from Denmark, I can easily say it and spell it (of course), and it’s a lovely name!!

I think it sounds nice after you hear the pronunciation lol but the spelling would definitely lead me to think it was said Soul-v-eye-gh. Not such a nice sound spelled like that lol. Maybe you could alter the spelling so it is a phonetic? Solvay? That doesn’t look bad and would help with the pronunciation if you live somewhere this name is uncommon. I like the sound! Goodluck!

I knew someone as a kid with that name but pronounced [name_m]Sol[/name_m]-veig (with the g, I grew up in the States btw). In Germany I also know a [name_f]Solveig[/name_f] that also pronounces it with the g. Might have issues if you go with [name_m]Sol[/name_m]-vay.

If pronouncing the name correctly (sol-vay), I think there will be a lot of pronunciation issues in the US. It’s a pretty name but I think there will always be pronunciation issues here unless you spell it a way that’s more phonetic, but please don’t do that.

It does sound foreign. And I do think there would be pronunciation issues. [name_f]Solveig[/name_f] to me looks like “[name_m]Sol[/name_m]-vigg”.

I agree with other posters that it sounds very pretty but will be difficult with pronunciation and spelling.

Have you thought of Sovay? I don’t think it’s listed on nameberry but it is a real name. Sovay is a heroine in a traditional English folk song.

I think you will have problems with pronunciation and spelling. The name can also be spelled Solvei. In Norway there are 64 named Solvei and 17 000 named [name_f]Solveig[/name_f], so it is an unusual spelling, but it is easier

I have a soft spot for Scandinavian names and I love [name_f]Solveig[/name_f], too, but yes, unfortunately unless you live in Scandinavia I think pronunciation/spelling problems are unavoidable.
