Summary
Women are sold as property when they turn 16, and from the age of 12 up they live in dorms and are taught how to cook and clean and be good wives. Pretty women and those who are best at cooking and cleaning are sold for more money, while women with “malfunctions” e.g. scars, deformities, mental and physical conditions are often sold for very low amounts of money. This backwards version of America is run by men- wealthy oligarchs who claim that the system has eradicated assault and loneliness. The main character is 15, turning 16 in a very short amount of time. She has friends who live in the dorms, and a 12 year old little sister who’s just moved in. She’s always dreamed of having her own happy ever after, and when she gets multiple possible buyers she’s ecstatic. But her best friend doesn’t get sold, she’s “too thin.” The protagonist soon learns about a side of this world that isn’t very great…what happens to the women who never get sold.
Main Character: she has curly/frizzy chestnut-reddish brown hair, freckles and dark brown eyes, she’s also very short in stature (around 5’2). She’s always dreamed of experiencing true love, and she’s very optimistic.
Little sister: she’s 12 and very sweet and innocent, she loves animals and nature. She looks a lot like her sister but with green eyes, and is almost her height- only her hair is naturally more smooth.
Best friend: she’s pretty tall (around 5’8), with messy light brown hair and a thin frame. She has large brown eyes and thin lips. She’s not very good at doing chores, and a natural pessimist who doesn’t care too much about anything. She also has a long, thin scar on her collarbone from a childhood accident.
