Been lurking on this site forever but thought it was about time I made an account. My husband and I are expecting our first child this [name_u]December[/name_u], and we‘re having a baby girl.
We’re beyond excited to meet her, but we’ve also run into quite a roadblock when it comes to her name. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. It’s feminine without being fussy, it’s got gravity without sounding too old-timey, it’s pretty uncommon without being too off the map, it’s straightforward to spell, no really negative associations, my husband likes it too… it’s (almost) perfect.
Unfortunately (although fortunately for her), a mom in the UK picked this perfection up too 30-something years ago and gave the name to her daughter, who went on to be the highest selling recording star in the world today, and who I don’t think will be going anywhere anytime soon. So, as much as I love the name and the musician too, I think it’s too one-personality. I worry that people will be singing my kid “Hellooooo, it’s meeeee” all the time (and as someone with one of the biggest song names ever, I know this stuff gets old quickly), I worry that it’ll be a joke to break up with her, I worry that she’ll come out tone-deaf and not live up to what the name suggests, I worry that I’m going to give birth fairly soon and still have no idea what to name this baby… I worry about everything, I’m a first-time mom
So, very long-winded post, but what’s [name_f]Adele[/name_f]… but also not [name_f]Adele[/name_f]? I’m not really a fan of the elaborations of the name, but I’m open to hear just about anything else.
There’s [name_f]Adela[/name_f], which I prefer to [name_f]Adele[/name_f].
I love the suggestion of [name_f]Lenore[/name_f]/[name_f]Leonor[/name_f], even [name_f]Lenora[/name_f]!
I understand your reservations but if I were you I’d still use it - it’s a beautiful name! And I personally don’t think it’s too associated with the singer to use. Some other ideas though:
I feel like Céline, [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_u]June[/name_u] might work for you if you love the name [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. They have a similar feel to me…
I love the name Adele! I think it’s a non-issue. It’s a normal name. And by normal, I don’t mean plain… but it’s not like a crazy unique name that someone famous has such as Cher, Oprah or Beyonce. THEN I could see people raising an eyebrow.
If I heard of a little baby girl named Adele, I would think what a gorgeous, underused name - such a pleasant surprise! I would not at all think it’s related to the singer.
Some names I think are similar in style (if repeats, just take it as I second it!):
I too think it’s a lovely name, but I could see the “Hello [name_f]Adele[/name_f]” thing happening. I don’t know if that should totally steer you away, though, if you both love it!
In case it’s definitely out, just a few ideas…
[name_f]Estele[/name_f] / [name_f]Estela[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Leila[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive [/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Arden[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Jules[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
I totally think you can get away with [name_f]Adele[/name_f]! I think if you do something that rhymes, you’ll just think of [name_f]Adele[/name_f] every time you say it. You should go in a different direction. [name_m]How[/name_m] about these?
[name_f]Myla[/name_f]
[name_f]Alisa[/name_f] or Marlisa
[name_f]Anina[/name_f] (Nickname [name_f]Nina[/name_f])
[name_u]Kenzie[/name_u] or [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f]
[name_u]Peyton[/name_u] or [name_u]Paisley[/name_u]
I love [name_f]Adele[/name_f], but I get your worries. However, I do think [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is a perfectly usable name, and the actress [name_f]Adele[/name_f] Exarchopoulos helped me to get pass the one-person name. It’s not like [name_f]Oprah[/name_f], [name_f]Beyonce[/name_f] or [name_f]Shakira[/name_f], as someone stated. Here are a few names with the same gravity and class - the central qualities of [name_f]Adele[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f] - I could think of:
I think you should use it ! If she’s getting broken up with in 15-20 years there’s a good chance a teenager won’t think of [name_f]Adele[/name_f]’s songs that are popular now. But, if you can’t use it:
[name_f]Delia[/name_f] - it’s on my own list if we have another girl
[name_f]Della[/name_f] - similar to [name_f]Adele[/name_f] but with another vibe ?
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] - similar elegance to [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
My sister’s name is [name_f]Adele[/name_f]! She is 17 and was not named after the singer :). My parents loved the name and have never regretted using it, but do get asked if she was named after the singer occasionally. In the last 2-3 years [name_f]Adele[/name_f] has had people who sing to her, or ask her to sing to them! But she’s taken it into stride and hasn’t had any problems with it.
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] is a very pretty name, and if you love it I think you should just use it! My sister typically goes by [name_u]Del[/name_u], and has a few friends who call her [name_f]Delly[/name_f] or [name_f]Delsie[/name_f] ([name_u]Del[/name_u]-Z). An [name_f]Adele[/name_f] could also go by [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Addy[/name_f].
