Something about Mary + a middle

Been considering [name_f]Mary[/name_f] for our little girl due in [name_m]August[/name_m]. [name_f]She[/name_f] wouldn’t be my first pick based on sound/vibe alone, but something tells me this might just be her name. (Side discussion, did this happen to any other people? Do babies pick their own names? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:) anyways, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is fairly traditional and plain, but i think to most people these days she is rather fresh and slightly noteworthy, at least on a baby. We wouldn’t use a nickname (at least regularly) or a double first. What are your thoughts on [name_f]Mary[/name_f]?

Should we go with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] for this new baby, I really want to be bold with the middle name. (Our last name is of the [name_m]Johnson[/name_m], [name_m]Thompson[/name_m], [name_m]Jones[/name_m] variety.) But bold in a recognized yet unexpected sort of way, not in a never-heard-that-before way. I want to give [name_f]Mary[/name_f] some intrigue, some sparkle or punch that it just doesn’t have on its own. I want it to be obvious that her name was chosen for her specifically, not one of the general middle names that sound good with everything. I’m leaning toward M.ary Edelweis.s, as that song played at our wedding.

What are your top 2 or 3 suggestions for a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] middle?

M.ary Edel.weis.s is so gorgeous! I know what you mean about [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I’ve really come around to her in the last few years.

For something wild… perhaps…

I actually love the name Mary! I think it’s a super sweet choice! And the middle you have so far would be adorable

I think Mary is one of those names that quietly comes back around and suddenly feels right again. On a baby today, Mary actually does feel fresh and a bit unexpected, especially without being a double name or nickname. It’s simple, grounded, and timeless in a way that stands out among more elaborate choices right now.

I love the idea of pairing it with something bold. Mary Edelweiss is honestly beautiful, romantic, meaningful, and definitely gives Mary that extra spark you’re looking for.

A few other ideas that feel “recognised but unexpected”:
Mary Clementine
Mary Delphine
Mary Valentine
Mary Lavender
Mary Jessamine
Mary Olympia
Mary Azalea
Mary Florence

Hope this helps!

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! I love how elegant and simple she is; timeless to the point where she actually feels unexpected & fresh in today’s world of more modern choices.

Ma.ry Ed3lweiss is stunning as a combo! I love the significance she has for you & your husband, and the flow is beautiful. [name_m]The[/name_m] rarity of Ed3lweiss with the simple beauty of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] really balances out the combo.

I think you’ve found your perfect name!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] in case, I’ll also suggest [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Loveday[/name_f].

Of the many babies and children I encounter every week, I actually did take note of a baby Mary I met at the park once, and I did indeed find it refreshing! It’s funny how such a historically popular name could have that effect, but it’s true.

Mary Edelweiss is beautifully vintage and lovely! I personally like Mary Evangeline and Mary Amaryllis

Also - sometimes you are just drawn to a name for a particular baby, even if it isn’t necessarily perfect on paper or your most favorite, it just speaks to you a bit differently from the others.

Yes, use her! She’s gorgeous and classic and not overused. I feel my babies chose their names, my taste in names changes when I’m pregnant with each one, names I thought would be it just no longer feel right. It’s strange but so true! M.ary Edelweis.s is stunning, her middle does exactly what you want it to for her, gives her lots of sparkle :sparkles:
[name_m]Nature[/name_m] middles could add sparkle too like [name_f]Bluebird[/name_f] or [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] :blossom:

I’m such a fan of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. It’s right near the top of my list. I love that it’s so versatile – sweet, sensible, assertive, dignified.

I adore your idea of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]. That’s going to be hard to beat especially with the added personal meaning. I haven’t seen anything I like for you more in the thread so far.

I am rather fond of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a double barrelled name. I wonder if you would enjoy creating one informally from the middle name. For instance M.E. could give you [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Avis[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Della[/name_f].

I’ll suggest [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] (Mary [name_f]Philou[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Lou), [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Agnieszka[/name_f] (Mary Aga), [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Florentine[/name_f] (Mary [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Fleur).

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is so cool, I love her! At one point, me and my husband were debating using [name_f]Mary[/name_f] v [name_f]Molly[/name_f] but ultimately [name_f]Molly[/name_f] won out (nothing about the name itself - [name_f]Molly[/name_f] fits better with our other favourites, and my MIL’s friend is [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and I couldn’t stand the thought of FIL insisting we’d named our daughter after her).

I feel like Mary’s sturdy classic feel really lends itself to a bold middle - M@ry Edelwe!$$ is definitely a wonderful combo and how lovely that it connects to your wedding!!

My favourite [name_f]Mary[/name_f] combo is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] as a double first but I think that may be more sedate than you’re looking for. [name_m]Other[/name_m] options:

  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Coriander[/name_m]
  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Titania[/name_f]

Honestly though, I think [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is the best option. [name_f]She[/name_f] sounds so fun with [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and you can’t beat that personal connection for you and your partner.

I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Ed3lweiss! How perfect!

I know a couple of late 20s/early 30s [name_f]Marys[/name_f] and it has always struck me as fresh on them, and just this week I encountered a 7yo [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and it felt fresh there too! So I really think it’s a great choice!

I agree with others it’s very fresh sounding . I don’t think it’s too plain. It’s so rare now it feels like a breath of fresh air . [name_m]Not[/name_m] dated at all.

A more unique or offbeat middle name is perfect.

[name_m]The[/name_m] one you mentioned is lovely.
