Sonny or Noah?

We cancelled our naming appointment on [name_f]Monday[/name_f] as could not decide. We’re going today instead.

Last night we finalised our two very different choices!

[name_u]Noah[/name_u] or [name_u]Sonny[/name_u], we put them in a cup and let our toddler pick. He pulled out [name_u]Sonny[/name_u], my SO graciously excepted it but could see he was upset.

I am such a nickname person and that’s my problem with [name_u]Noah[/name_u], there is no nickname for it I can think off? I don’t mind the name at all, I’ve got over the fact that it’s really popular I just prefer [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]… My boyfriend feels that [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is great for a kid but not a grown man and that it is too matchy with our first son Teddys name…

Help…

The answer is just so simple.
Call your baby [name_u]Noah[/name_u], and give him the nn [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. I don’t like [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] for an adult.

I think you should choose [name_u]Noah[/name_u].

[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] rhymes too much with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]'s name. And plus you’re SO thinks it doesn’t work for an adult man (which I don’t think so either)

Besides, you can just give your child a middle name that you can call them by if you want.

I prefer [name_u]Noah[/name_u] sooo much more than [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] is lovely together!

Think I may have chimed in before so excuse if repeat but what about a longer name that means you can use [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] - eg any of the “son” names, [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] etc.

Whatever you decide, he has a lovely name and I hope you can make a decision and be confident and not worry whether it was the the right choice.
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] is a lovely name. Sure, there are no intuitive nicknames. But if you’re a nickname person, he’ll get a nickname. It’ll come naturally. None of my kids go by nicknames that were pre planned.
[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is one of my favorite nicknames. I prefer it as a nickname with my favorite ways to get to it being [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Wilson[/name_m], Jemison and Somerled. That’s just my style. I don’t think [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] sounds any less mature than [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. The name will grow with him. By time he’s an adult, it’ll seem perfectly natural to your SO as an adult name. I can picture it on a grown man quite well.

I have to agree with your bf and would suggest that you name him [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. Nicknames do not have to be derived from the given name so you can name him [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] can be his nickname while he is a young boy, or when you choose to use it.

I also vote [name_u]Noah[/name_u] for reasons mentioned above.

While not a huge fan of either name I prefer [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. And [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] sounds like [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]'s brother, whereas [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] just sounds strange to me. If neither of you can compromise (and why should you - you both need to like the name) then perhaps you should work at coming up with something else altogether that you can agree on?

My thoughts exactly.

I love [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. Noey could be a nn, though [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is perfect.

I noticed it’s past your appointment. Did you make a selection?

I like the idea of [name_u]Noah[/name_u], with the nn of [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. Good luck with your decision!
