Sonny 🧸

hi there!

[name_f][/name_f]

for some context i’m not pregnant nor will i be for at least another 2-3 years, but being the name nerd that i am, i’ve been bouncing some ideas off of my partner for our future little ones. i have an incredibly hard time with boy names, i have some that i like but never any that i can actually see myself using. my partner is also incredibly picky with names, specifically boys names, so that makes it extra hard.

tonight i had a small win (lol) when i mentioned the name “sonny” and he said that he likes it! what are your thoughts on it? does it work as a stand-alone name or does it sound too “kiddish”? i typically don’t really like names that are more nicknames as i have this fear that they won’t age well when they’re an adult.

my apologies for the long winded post! i’m open to any and all opinions, for his middle i think we would do robert.

I love the name [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- my son has a longer formal name but everyone knows him as [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] :sun_with_face:[name_f][/name_f] On one hand, I like the fact that he has another name to go by in case he feels he’s outgrown his nickname, but on the other I feel that [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] really works on its own. Of course, that is a matter of opinion. Some others will disagree, but I find most names like [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_m]Barry[/name_m], [name_f]Benny[/name_f], [name_m]Archie[/name_m], etc. are perfectly suitable on their own, save for a few. That really comes down to you!

We get mild surprise and pleasant feedback about his name, most have never met another one and will pause for a second, then say something like “Oh, I like/love that!” (I’m gonna assume most of them mean it, I know most people won’t tell you they don’t like your baby’s name to your face lol). A few have made the [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] & [name_f]Cher[/name_f] connection (he isn’t named after him but we don’t mind the association) but not overwhelmingly so.

I love saying his name, it feels bright, sweet, happy, it carries the masculinity of “son” and the sun :sun_with_face:[name_f][/name_f] while retaining lightness and a cute factor in the “y” ending. [name_f]My[/name_f] own [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is a little fireball of a human with lots of strong will [name_f][/name_f] but also loves his mama to bits.

[name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is charming [name_f][/name_f]- gentle but cool! I know a couple of Sonnys and it’s fairly well used as a given name these days, so your [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] would be growing up with other Sonnys so it will fit in with his generation.

I think it would age fine

Where I am [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is a popular choice and feels very mainstream. I know lots and lots of Sonny’s with a variation of different spellings such as Sunny/Sonnie/Sunnie etc. I would actually be surprised to come across a [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] where this name was a nickname for a different name. I know @rosajune[name_f][/name_f] has [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] as a nickname (her sons name is gorgeous) but outside of Nameberry where I am [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is always used as a name in his own right.
[name_f][/name_f]I do not find [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] immature/childish or in need of a name to fall back on. I think [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] definitely works he has a quiet strength behind him and looks very complete. [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is handsome, outdoorsy and bright. Very gorgeous name.

I can see it at any age, such a cute infant name them onto boy hood and onto a little old man. I think it’s a great choice!

[name_m]Sonny[/name_m] is such a gentle and peaceful name. I believe it ages well. It feels joyful and warm, reminding me of [name_f]Sunny[/name_f]. [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] has a beautiful flow. As an alternative, I adore [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Sonny[/name_m].
