I’m looking for female names for myself and I have my list narrowed down to these names.
I’m just going to put them out there and see what people think.
My favourite is Sophia or maybe Sophie. Since Sophie is a nickname for Sophia anyway, I prefer Sophia. It’s popular in my country too, not just overseas, so it just works nicely. I don’t like the nickname Soph at all, but nobody in my country uses it anyway so it’s fine.
My second favourite is Olivia. It is not very popular in my country, but because it’s popular enough in the US that people here at least know it, I think it still works. People know Olivia Rodrigo. I hate the nickname Ollie, but like Liv and Livi and I’ve met people named these before, but never an Olivia.
Luna! I love it and I even know one, but it’s everybody’s dog’s name. So annoying because it’s such a pretty name otherwise.
Stella, same problem as Luna. Obviously I like all these names, but Stella is not my favourite out of all of them.
Isabella with the nickname Bella! Also a dog name, but you don’t have to go by Bella so I feel like it’s not as bad. I like Izzy.
I used to go by a nickname that everyone online insisted was a dog name (Molly) and it literally never came up once in the 2 years that I used that nickname! I don’t think that a name being a “dog name” is actually a problem in any way.
I would probably remove Stella and Olivia from the list if I were you. With Stella, you admit it’s not your favourite name. And with Olivia, if you think that people may default to using Ollie as a nickname, I wouldn’t choose it, since you hate Ollie so much.
From the others, Luna is my favourite! I’m not sure where you’re from but I think it works well internationally and it’s really beautiful.
I don’t think [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] are exclusively dog names - I’ve met a few Stellas, a number of Isabellas / Bellas, and a baby [name_f]Luna[/name_f]!
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is a good choice - solid and international. It gives you the possibility of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but most of the Sophias I’ve know have just been [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] (and one Phia/Fia).
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is another solid choice - same vibes as [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Most Olivias I’ve met have used either their full name or Liv/Livvy, and the one [name_m]Ollie[/name_m] I’ve encountered really suited it but I don’t think it would be people’s ‘go to’ nickname.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is pretty - sweet, bright and lively.
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] is earthy but celestial at the same time - probably my (personal) favourite on the list, but if it’s not yours, I’d say take it off if you want to narrow down your choices!
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is elegant and classic with a nice mix of sweet and sharp sounds. I’ve known Bellas and Isabellas and no one’s brought up [name_f]Bella[/name_f] is a dogs’ name!
Thank you so much! The nickname anecdote really helps. I think the older you get, the less people will bully you about these things. At least I hope so because I get bullied for my current name heavily.
I don’t even know anyone who goes by a nickname here. I think most people just use their full name. However I really do hate Ollie, even though I doubt people would call me it anyway. It’s better to be safe.
Still, I’m at the point where I think Sophia is my best choice. It is just more well known here and I don’t want to stick out either.
As for Stella, you are right. It’s not my favourite because for some reason all the people I asked started making fun of it, which is so childish, but I just want to be accepted.
My birth name has been a burden to me for over 15 years. I just want to blend in. I’ve had enough of my grandad bullying me for my name. He rhymes it with nasty insults in his language like ugly Kate, pig Kate, trash Kate and so on (Kate is not my real name, just using it as an example).
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on all my names. It really helps a lot!
I think it will be Sophia. I do love Phia, no issues there.
If not, then either Isabella or maybe Olivia if I can get my friends and family’s reassurance that nobody will call me Ollie.
I’ve never seen Ollie used for Olivia, but I know zero Olivias to begin with. I just overthink things maybe a bit too much. It’s difficult because this is the name I have to stick with for the rest of my life.
I’m going to take Stella off because between Isabella and Stella I would choose Isabella and they are very similar, so I’m able to narrow my list down more.
I might be back once more after conferring with my friends and family on my now shorter list and maybe for a middle name suggestion because none of these go together as first and middle names (too similar).
I’ve never heard of [name_f]Soph[/name_f] as a nickname. You should be fine. If you like that best, use it.
I think [name_m]Ollie[/name_m] is used more for boys named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] than for girls named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I’m pretty sure [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Livi[/name_f] are the default [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] nicknames.
I don’t know any dogs named [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. Also, people name dogs names that they like. It does not mean that the name is unfit for humans.
So I think all of these names are fine names, and there is no bad choice here. Good luck with the name search!
I liked them all at some point. I still like them, except for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], which just doesn’t sound nice to me anymore. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is the [name_f]French[/name_f] form of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and a full name, kind of like [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is [name_f]French[/name_f] for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Maria[/name_f]. I would much rather choose just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], which is lovely!
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is nice. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] seems more mystical. [name_f]Stella[/name_f] is pretty, but a bit harsh. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] is nice, but I don’t like [name_f]Izzy[/name_f].
I would go with your intuition. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite would be [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabella[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorites on your list are [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but since you seem to like [name_f]Stella[/name_f] the least you should go for one of the others and while I personally like just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] a lot more than [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], the [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] I know does get called [name_f]Soph[/name_f] sometimes so that also might not be the right choice for you.
You seem most excited about [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I’m leaning towards [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] being my vote because I love [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Livi[/name_f], [name_m]Ollie[/name_m] doesn’t seem like a very likely nickname, its less common in your area which might be nice, and I prefer [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] which might be due to my own hangups about strongly prefering [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] as a full name and maybe shouldn’t be taken into account. With [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] being the nickname for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] you’re less likely to have it shortened further to [name_f]Soph[/name_f] but its not entirely impossible so it maybe comes down to if your love for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is strong enough to outweigh the chance of being called [name_f]Soph[/name_f] occasionally or if the even smaller chance of someone trying to go for [name_m]Ollie[/name_m] instead of the nickname you’ve stated is better odds for avoiding a nickname you don’t like.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] are both nice but you seem more excited about [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. If you’re changing your middle name too you could maybe put [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in the middle since you really like it and as a middle the dog name/knowing someone called that would be less of a big deal.
All the names on your list are gorgeous! I love [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. However, based on your descriptions, [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] sounds perfect for you! If you truly love it for yourself, please follow your heart.
