Sophia/Sofia, Amelia/Emilia and popular names misleading

Berries, I know we all see posts about names like Olivia or Emma for example being so popular but I actually realized the names Sophia and Amelia are more popular than the #1 Olivia (here in the US). When you add the number of births last year in America of Sophia + Sofia spelling, there were about 1700 more babies born with that name. If you add Amelia + Emilia there were also slightly more births than Olivia. I wish lists gave accurate understandings of the true popularity of names by combining all spelling variations. BTW all of those names are gorgeous! I just feel like a lot of people opt for different names because they feel like they’re slightly less popular or avoid Olivia when in reality I don’t think it’s truly the most popular name. What do you think?

I do think it’s definitely something to consider - I have seen ‘creative’ spellings to avoid using a popular name and that does confuse me a little, because, you know, it’s still the same name? Personally, I’d avoid [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Livia[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f] in general as firsts because of the popularity of Sophia/Amelia/Olivia :man_shrugging:

There’s a blog out there called Name Nerds that goes through and combines all the alternate spellings to make a list exactly like you’re describing. They also use the extended ssa data so it goes way past the top 1000.

But yeah, you’re totally right that most lists aren’t exactly accurate once you take multiple spellings into account. During the height of the Adeline/Adelyn craze a few years ago it was in the top 5 or so once you combined all the alternatives even though neither of those spellings was ever even in the top 50 on their own.
