Sophia?

I know, I know. It looks like [name]Sophia[/name]'s going to be 2011’s number one name, but I’ve been coming back to it for weeks now, and it has quite a bit of personal significance for me.

I’ve been trying to make [name]Josephine[/name], nn [name]Posey[/name], work since I love [name]Posey[/name] so much, but there’s just something about [name]Josephine[/name] that I can’t quite get behind. I was ready to nix [name]Josephine[/name] for [name]Hannah[/name] when someone suggested [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name] to me, and I was instantly in love. I know [name]Sophia[/name] is popular, but, popularity aside, wdyt of the name? [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Posey[/name] could work as a nn for it? I know it’s a stretch, but I’ve heard several considering it, and it feels much more down my alley than [name]Josephine[/name] or [name]Primrose[/name], and I’m not bothered in the least by popularity.

I’m leaning toward [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] as a combo, or possibly [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] ([name]Eilidh[/name] is a family name) if that sways you at all.

Thanks!

I personally don´t think [name]Posey[/name] works as a nn for [name]Sophia[/name]… I think if you love [name]Posey[/name] you could use it as a mn or even as a first name.

[name]Sophia[/name] is a beautiful name, it is popular for a reason  [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] is a great combo, how do you pronounce [name]Eilidh[/name]? I think [name]Posey[/name] is a precious nn for [name]Sophia[/name], I am not too strict with nicknames and it works fine for me.

Eilidh is like AY-lee. Like Haley without the “H”. It’s the Scottish form of Helen/Helena.

And thanks about Posey! I’ve seen several places list it as working for Sophia, but I had never considered it before, so I was curious how others reacted. It works for me, but I was afraid I was one of a select few, haha.

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Ash[/name],

I wanted to respond since my little girl is [name]Sophia[/name] (mn N0elani) and for a while I tried to nickname her [name]Posy[/name] (I prefer this spelling), though it didn’t stick and she (I think she was around 4 at the time) eventually protested–I think she sensed I was straining! But I do think it’s a very sweet nn for [name]Sophia[/name] and not really that much more of a stretch (though less traditional) than it is as a nn for [name]Josephine[/name].

Anyway, you’re not going to get an unbiased opinion from me about [name]Sophia[/name], but I’ll say that even if it ruins my street cred as a name nerd, I still think it’s one of the loveliest, richest names out there. In some ways its popularity is even a bonus, as its beauty still gives me chills when I see it/hear it, and that’s reasonably often.

[name]Josephine[/name] is a great name, too, but for me, [name]Sophia[/name]–while still ladylike–is freer and less stuffy.

[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] makes me think of a fresh, crisp spring. [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] looks gorgeous, but not sure how you pronounce [name]Eilidh[/name]?

[name]Love[/name] the names in your signature, by the way!

Okay, just saw this. That’s so pretty. Maybe a bit challenging to go from the short “a” in [name]Sophia[/name] to the long “a,” but not prohibitively so.

Obviously I love [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name] haha! Who cares if it is the new number 1? [name]Isabella[/name] was number 1 before and [name]Isabelle[/name] is not that far off from it and [name]Olivia[/name] is high up there too. Popularity really does not matter when you really love the name. I love [name]Iris[/name] because it reminds me of the Goo Goo Dolls song, but [name]Eilidh[/name] has such a pretty sound! I think I would have to see the 2nd MN before I could really choose between them.

[name]Just[/name] take the plunge and go with [name]Posey[/name] as her first name, its super cute
Good luck,
[name]Eva[/name] & [name]Zoe[/name]'s Mommy!

I don’t think [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name] is farfetched. I personally like [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Zoe[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t remember how I got that. Lol. I think [name]Sophia[/name] is a beautiful name. I wanted to use it but, alas, the popularity got me.

lol, I haven’t gotten to second MNs yet. I also really love [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Josephine[/name], but I think I might prefer [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name]. There’s just something about it! I don’t know, I’d like to keep a family name, but I have so many family names that I love! Some options so far:

[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Rue[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] (usually don’t like [name]Maeve[/name] at all, but it’s really close to my grandmother’s name and I actually sort of like it here…)
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Opal[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Johanna[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Esmeralda[/name] (or even [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Esmeralda[/name] _____)

I even sort of like [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Natalie[/name]… The last time [name]Sophia[/name] was on my top 10, my combo was [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Vivienne[/name], and I’m still completely taken with that, I think it’s so stunning… it’s just… no family connection, which would bug me, since all my other girls’ names have a family tie, but how gorgeous is that? [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Vivienne[/name] just makes me smile. Although I’ve never really loved [name]Vivienne[/name], so maybe I can do better. The part I really love is the [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] part…

I don’t know for [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name]… when that combo was on my list the last time, it was just [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name]… it was before I had gone to two MNs. Maybe [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] [name]Claire[/name]? [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]? [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Eilidh[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] probably sounds the best, but [name]Eilidh[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name] honor the same person, urgh.

I agree that [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] is beautiful.

[name]Posey[/name] as a nickname is kind of a stretch but, why not? I sometimes wonder how some nicknames came about. Here in Mexico, there are various names with common nicknames that don’t seem very related to the original name. For example, a traditional nickname for [name]Aurora[/name] is [name]Lola[/name].

I really really [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]!!! The flow is just perfect

I really love the name [name]Sophia[/name] and am sad that it is so popular, but I can’t blame any mom for choosing it ^^ However, [name]Posey[/name] really has no connection to the name, and [name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name] is already a stretch to me. I assume you intended a [name]Josie[/name] [name]Posey[/name] connection? If you’re this in love with [name]Posey[/name], I agree that you should just make that your daughter’s full first name. It will prevent her from having to explain her nickname to others–classmates, teachers, co-workers-- in the future.

[name]Ash[/name], let me ask you about the nn [name]Posey[/name]. Is it the sort of nn you imagine calling your child eg “Come on [name]Posey[/name] eat your breakfast” solely? or also a nn she would write on school work eg “[name]Posey[/name] [name]Smith[/name]”? I imagine if she had [name]Posey[/name] as nn you use/ family use it could work no problem. If you choose [name]Sophia[/name] (which is a gorgeous name which matches well with [name]Isabelle[/name]) why wouldn’t you use [name]Sophia[/name]? I guess what I am trying to work out is how you imagine the nn being used? would she introduce herself as [name]Sophia[/name]? or [name]Posey[/name]?

Oh I like the mn [name]Iris[/name] -by the Googoo Dolls too. Was playing with the name [name]Iris[/name] just this morning for the exact link. LOL

I think [name]Sophia[/name] is really pretty, maybe [name]Fia[/name] could be a nn? [name]Posey[/name] is a bit of a stretch… Maybe [name]Posey[/name] could just stand by itself.

my sister’s daughter is [name]Sophia[/name], so its a family name for me…but its an adorable name anyway, and [name]Posey[/name] is a cute name too!

I’ve only just seen this post but I must say [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] is stunning and definitely my favourite from the options you have listed.

I’ve never met, or heard of a [name]Sophie[/name] or [name]Sophia[/name] being called [name]Posey[/name], how did you come up with this one? I’m just curious because it isn’t obvious to me but I do think it’s beautiful. I’ve never heard of a [name]Josephine[/name] being called [name]Posey[/name] either, mainly just [name]Josie[/name] but I don’t think the British are very creative with nicknames and I think most wouldn’t plan ahead for a nickname but wait to see what nicknames evolve - obviously excluding really obvious ones such as [name]Tom[/name], [name]Ben[/name], [name]Sam[/name] etc.

I’ve just looked back on the combo’s you’re considering, and [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] was another stand out!

Lastly, I actually think [name]Sophia[/name] is perfect with your other favourites, and as long as the popularity doesn’t bother you then it’s a great choice.

[name]IMO[/name] I don’t think that [name]Posey[/name] works as a nn for [name]Sophia[/name]. It’s just too much of a stretch for me. Personally, [name]Sophia[/name] is just wayyy too popular for me to consider using, but if you really love it, go for it. If that’s the name you connect with above all others, and you’re not considered about the popularity, then I think you should use it rather than risk having name remorse if you settle for something you don’t truly love.

Well, someone on here suggested [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name] to me, and I thought it was a bit of a stretch, but possibly do-able… and then on [name]Posey[/name]'s name profile page thingy on Nameberry, it lists that it can be a nn for [name]Sophia[/name], and then I found several threads on Nameberry with people actually considering [name]Sophia[/name] nn [name]Posey[/name], so I thought it might be doable, haha. I know it’s a bit of a stretch, but I do really like it as an option. I’m not 100% sold on [name]Sophia[/name], but I would use it anyday above just [name]Posey[/name], and I definitely like [name]Sophia[/name] more than [name]Josephine[/name] (although I do think [name]Posey[/name] is more of a stretch for [name]Sophia[/name]…). I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do… I just want to be able to keep [name]Posey[/name], haha. I’m leaning toward [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Kate[/name] right now, but I do really like [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] or maybe even [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Rue[/name]…

[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Kate[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] IT!!! The nn [name]Posey[/name] would be perfect as [name]Iris[/name] is a flower!
