I ran across this name today on a little 10 year old boy. I’ve never heard it before. I’m wondering if it’s too close to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] to work for a boy. What do you think?
Maybe it was a family name?
Honestly when I saw the title of the thread I thought you had made a creative name and was asking thoughts about it. I think it is way too close to [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
Maybe his parents wanted to create a “masculine form” of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] by adding the “n” ending (which is so popular for boys right now)?

Quick Google search seems to give pretty good evidence that it’s a name that’s in use in Northern [name_f]Africa[/name_f] or the Middle [name_f]East[/name_f]. There are several adult men named Sophian with Linked In accounts and one semi-famous soccer player.
I also thought it was a creative spin on [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] at first.
I must agree with @dozenroses that it could be misinterpreted as [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f].
One website has it as an Arabic name meaning “devoted”.
[name_u]Urban[/name_u] dictionary even has an entry on it “A sorry excuse for a man’s name. Not quite [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (a females name)…we added the “n”. Basically your parents hate you.”
I have heard of someone considering it, pronounced so-fy-ahn.
So it looks like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but does sound different.
Still don’t like it though…

It doesn’t sound like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] with an N so no it’s not too close

Sophian= SAW-fee-en, it’s quite close to Xavien ‘ZAW-vee-en’
I don’t see a problem with it. If you can have [name_f]Julia[/name_f] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m] why not [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and Sophian?
I think it looks like a saint’s name, along the lines of Gratian, [name_m]Bastian[/name_m], [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] etc. - I quite like it! Much prefer it to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] anyway. Ophion (“snake”) is similar, he was the Ancient Greek [name_m]Titan[/name_m] of the heavens, so it’s not that far off.
Lol, yes there are a few names where if you take the last letter off/add or just switch with another letter - then belongs to the other gender. [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_m]Theodor[/name_m]/[name_m]Theodor[/name_m]. [name_f]Benedicta[/name_f], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]. And someone else said [name_f]Julia[/name_f] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m]… So there are several.
But Sophian just doesn’t work for me.

I actually liked this name from first impression. I would never use it because it is way too close to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] for me, but I can definitely appreciate it on someone else!!
I live in the Netherlands and I know three little Dutch boys named Sophian (as the male version of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] = wisdom). It’s not uncommon in Belgium, too. I think it is a very beautiful name.
As Arabic name it is a variant of Sofiane.
It sounds more feminine. At first glance I’d guess it was a girl name. It’s cute though.

I actually don’t mind it as a name, but I do think it is too close to the mega popular [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] for it to work. I feel the same way about [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] actually.
I’ve never seen that spelling before, but I’ve met two boys named Sofian. It’s not really my style, but I think it can be a good alternative to other -an names. To me it doesn’t sound more feminine than say, [name_m]Julian[/name_m] or [name_m]Stellan[/name_m].
