We are having a baby girl in a few weeks and still haven’t decided on a name. Our dilemma is this: We want the middle name to be [name]Jane[/name], to honor my mother, but it doesn’t go with the first name we like best…which is [name]Rose[/name]. We really like the idea of naming the baby [name]Rose[/name], because she will be born in [name]England[/name] and we think it’s a cute tribute (we are Americans and will be moving back in a few years).
Then I thought, hey, my mom’s name is actually [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name], so maybe we could use the [name]Mary[/name] part instead, and do [name]Rosemary[/name] as a first and pick a different middle. Anyway, here are some we’ve thought of, including our other top choice and the original middle we wanted to use:
Any other good suggestions for a middle to go with [name]Rosemary[/name]? Or do any of these choices stand out to anyone? I can’t seem to find something I just love, and I am still not so keen on [name]Rosemary[/name] instead of [name]Rose[/name]. Blah.
I like [name]Rosemary[/name], but I think if you love [name]Rose[/name] as the first name you should go with [name]Rose[/name] as the first name! It’s wonderful and it will make you happy, which is most important; when it comes to your child’s first name, you should never feel like you settled for second best.
That said, I do think it’s wonderful to honor your Mom with the middle and agree that [name]Rose[/name] [name]Jane[/name] doesn’t have the best flow.
My suggestion is that you work from the [name]Mary[/name] part of your Mom’s name, but that you incorporate it into the middle name rather than the first. There are plenty of [name]Mary[/name] variants that would make wonderful middle names for [name]Rose[/name]. I really like:
My mother’s name is [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] too. (My middle name is [name]Jane[/name], and I passed [name]Jane[/name] on to my daughter. However, I have given a lot of thought to using [name]Mary[/name] in some manner for a possible second daughter.)
Oh, I love [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name]! What an awesome name. I really like [name]Rose[/name], but the combination of [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] is perfect to me.
Definitely use [name]Rose[/name]! It’s so classy and almost unheard of nowadays as a first name. I like the idea of using a second middle name to break up [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Jane[/name].
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Natalia[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Theodora[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Moira[/name] [name]Jane[/name] ([name]Moira[/name] is also a variant of [name]Mary[/name])
Or you could use a variant of [name]Jane[/name] as a middle…
I really like the previous posters’ suggestions of [name]Rose[/name] with a [name]Mary[/name] name, like [name]Rose[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]. From your list, I really love [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Stella[/name]! [name]Avery[/name] is a surname, and really doesn’t fit with your list. [name]Georgiana[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is a total tongue twister, and I’m not really a fan of [name]Penelope[/name]. [name]Magnolia[/name] is pretty, but might be too over the top. What about:
I prefer [name]Rose[/name] to [name]Rosemary[/name], and it seems you do, too. [name]Don[/name]'t use a name you don’t love! If you want a longer variant of [name]Rose[/name], some of my favorites are [name]Rosalind[/name] and [name]Rosanna[/name]. I think they manage to sound vintage and modern at the same time, unlike [name]Rosemary[/name], which feels a bit old to me…
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Jane[/name] would be a pretty combination, I think, but this also depends on your last name, you know. Here are some other ideas, if you are interested:
I am sort of leaning towards [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name]…as [name]Agnes[/name] was my husband’s grandmother’s name.
I can’t really get on board with a variation of [name]Mary[/name] as the middle with [name]Rose[/name]…using [name]Mary[/name] instead of [name]Jane[/name] is already a stretch, as my mom definitely goes by [name]Jane[/name] and has kind of always preferred it vastly to [name]Mary[/name]. But thanks for the ideas.
We still also really like [name]Magnolia[/name], it’s more unusual than [name]Rose[/name]/[name]Rosemary[/name] and we love the nn [name]Maggy[/name].
Our last name starts with L and is two syllables. It sounds good with all of the suggestions above, so it’s not too big of a worry.
