What would be modern-day southern belle names?
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Caroline/name
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Alexandria[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
These names scream “southern belle” to me.
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Ada[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Hope[/name] I helped! -[name]Freya[/name]
Well I live in good ol’ [name]Georgia[/name] and consider myself a Southern [name]Belle[/name] so I’ll share what I see a lot.
A lot of double names. I think this happens everywhere a bit, but it is very common.
Examples of girls I know:
[name]Emma[/name] [name]Jean[/name]
[name]Emma[/name] [name]Kate[/name] (that’s me!)
[name]Anna[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Bo[/name] [name]Kate[/name] (Though I think boys’ name on girls in a double name fashion is more Appalachian)
[name]Ellie[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Marybeth[/name]
And it isn’t just younger girls, which I think a lot of other regions have the double names, they continue to use them as they get older.
Of course there are lot of Southern Association names like:
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Carolina[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Savannah[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Delta[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Dallas[/name] (but lordy, [name]Texas[/name] is not the south to me y’all, but to each his own.)
[name]Dixie[/name] (I don’t know how “southern belle” this is though)
[name]Emory[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name]
[name]Marietta[/name] (of course, you could say it like we say the city…may-retta…, but it is a pretty cute name if you say it like it is spelled)
There are Southern Belles in the media too, real and fictional
[name]Ada[/name] (from Cold Mountain)
[name]Sookie[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Reece[/name]
[name]Eudora[/name] (this the first name I think of when I think of a classy Southern lady, I love how all my English teachers growing up called her Miss [name]Eudora[/name])
[name]Flannery[/name]
Southern Women in My Extend Southern Family
[name]Stacy[/name]
[name]Kyle[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Dorcas[/name] (x2)
[name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Emery[/name]
[name]Julianna[/name]
[name]Just[/name] some other names that I have never met a Yankee with:
[name]Azalea[/name]
[name]Beulah[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Dottie[/name]
[name]Dulcie[/name]
[name]Emery[/name]
[name]Eugenia[/name] nn [name]Jenny[/name] or [name]Ginny[/name]
[name]Ida[/name]
Presence
[name]Queenie[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Zora[/name]
And honestly, I would stay away from GWTW names. most people I know who love the book aren’t actually from the South. And I know way more Scarletts from the [name]North[/name] then I do from the South. Sure it has a strong association, but isn’t very realistic, [name]IMO[/name].
ooh fun! Here goes:
[name]Angela[/name]
[name]Belle[/name]
[name]Carla[/name]
[name]Darlene[/name]
[name]Evangeline[/name]/[name]Evangelina[/name]
[name]Francis[/name]
[name]Jacklyn[/name]
[name]Louanne[/name]
[name]Lulu[/name]/Lulubelle
[name]Maryanne[/name]
[name]Ruthanne[/name]
[name]Savannah[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Shelby[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Tabatha[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Ashley[/name]
[name]Colby[/name]
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
[name]Gabe[/name]
[name]Garrett[/name]
[name]Jesse[/name]
[name]Kelvin[/name]
[name]Landon[/name]/[name]Lanny[/name]
[name]Lyle[/name]
[name]Mitchel[/name]
[name]Oren[/name]
[name]Perry[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]
[name]Rafe[/name]/[name]Raferty[/name]
[name]Ross[/name]
[name]Stefan[/name]
[name]Terry[/name]/[name]Terence[/name]
[name]Wesley[/name]
Most of these name probably have nothing to do with the south, but to me they seem totally southern.
*oops totally added southern boys names…
haha… I’m originally from Appalachian Mtns of NC, and I definitely agree with the boy-girl double name. Many people in my family have it. For example, my uncle ([name]Bobby[/name] [name]Jo[/name]) has a daughter named [name]Kathy[/name] [name]Jo[/name]. I love double names, and I think they definitely sound southern. My grandmothers always call me [name]Laura[/name] [name]Ann[/name]… never just [name]Laura[/name].

Oh good! I was afraid I was making an assumption about the whole region with the one [name]Bo[/name] [name]Kate[/name] I know from Kentucky! I love double names, I think they are just plain spunky.
misswoodhouse-- your list and commentary was so much fun to read!! Thank you for sharing
Well, hell no, [name]Texas[/name] isn’t the South! [name]Texas[/name] is [name]TEXAS[/name], thank you very much! =)
(But in actuality, most historians draw the westernmost edge of the Deep South at [name]East[/name] [name]Texas[/name] to [name]Dallas[/name], as the terrain, climate, demographics and culture are more Southern than Southwestern.)
Heck yes!
Heck yes! :D[/quote]
Aww, good. I love my [name]Texas[/name] girls, but I never get the whole get lump-it-with-the-deep-south thing. Are there any “[name]Texas[/name]” names out there?
Well, the problem with [name]Texas[/name] is the one that I iterated earlier, it is SO huge, there are varying cultural influences at play in different regions-Southwest in [name]El[/name] Paso, Midwestern in the panhandle, Latino on the border, and, yes, Southern in the [name]East[/name]. In my part of [name]Texas[/name], a stone’s throw from [name]Louisiana[/name], naming traditions would be much like [name]Georgia[/name]'s. BUT as to true [name]Texas[/name]-pride names…
[name]Augustus[/name]
[name]Austin[/name]
[name]Boone[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Dallas[/name]
[name]Emily[/name] (The Yellow [name]Rose[/name] of [name]Texas[/name]!)
[name]Henrietta[/name]
[name]Houston[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Lamar[/name]
[name]Nelson[/name]
[name]Parker[/name]
[name]Rice[/name]
[name]Selena[/name]
[name]Susana[/name]
[name]Travis[/name]
[name]Waylon[/name]
This is a mix of [name]Texas[/name] history, [name]Texas[/name] music, and some Lonesome [name]Dove[/name] for good measure!
Here are the names that come to mind:
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f])
Lisabelle (pron. [name_f]LIZ[/name_f]-a-bell)
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_f]Juliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] (which I love)
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]/[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
I actually like a lot of these names!
Give her a family surname in the middle spot. A relatively popular trend in my neck of the woods right now is to do [name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Emma[/name_f] + a family surname and call her by both names ([name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_m]Carlton[/name_m], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] Wilkins, etc). I guess it’s meant to be a fresher take on the stereotypical Southern double name.
I’m [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] myself, and I love it! I’m in my 20s, and people often think I am older than I am because of my name. I think that’s fine for a southern belle, many of us are old souls after all!
I’m having a baby girl, and I want her to have a southern belle name like me. I want a double name, and I want [name_u]June[/name_u] to be the end of the name. I’ve thought of a few. I would really appreciate any suggestions or criticisms
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]-[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Libby[/name_f]-[name_u]June[/name_u]
My Husband loves [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_u]June[/name_u], but I’m not so sure on it…
