I like McBride, but I don’t like that it starts with an M, as I’d prefer for their surname to not start with M or C. I also feel like the end of [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] runs into the beginning of McBride.
I love the story by the way! I live in a very southern state (not saying where for privacy reasons) but I’ve met a lot of different people with different last names. I’ll list some but I can also list some very southern names in case you need middle names for more first names for any other characters!

I’d say one of the most southern is [name_m]Woods[/name_m] so I think you should go with that! Here are some southern first or middle names.
I know that ‘Southern’ is not an origin that a name can have. Some names give off certain vibes, and I’d like the vibes of these characters surname to feel sort of Southern. That’s all I mean.
I don’t really know what you mean by “southern surname”, but I can give you some help on surnames in [name_f]Texas[/name_f]. A lot of people’s families came from other places in the United States, so just any name common in the United States would work fine. But [name_f]Texas[/name_f] also has a lot of Mexicans and Germans. But remember, [name_f]Texas[/name_f] just like any other state has all kinds of people so you don’t have to stick to this. Also, the first names that popped into my head were [name_m]Milam[/name_m] and [name_m]Mason[/name_m], lol. I always find it fun to look into a place’s history to find last names too. Fun fact, [name_m]Alvar[/name_m] Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish explorer looking for gold who shiprecked in [name_f]Texas[/name_f], his last name means head of a cow.
So McBride doesn’t read as particularly southern to me? It fits the names of the characters and they don’t sound necessarily out of place in [name_f]Texas[/name_f] there but it’s not like “an old southern name” feel.
I tend to use the terms southern, country, and cowboy relatively interchangeably, because a lot of my characters that fit in one of those categories, are sort of a combination. So maybe country or cowboy is a better term than southern for McBride.
